A Peak Behind the Creativity
by Steiner09er on 10/9/25Emo's Austin - AustinRating: 2 out of 5I came to this concert to relive the 2010's where I had Gossamer, Manners, and the Chunk of Change EP stuck in my head for a decade. But, this show was really a look behind the brain of lead singer Michael Angelakos and less of a tribute to the spiritual experience that is live music.
While he played all the hits, the theme of the show was the audience talking amongst themselves while the band played on synths until they found the iconic sounds known in the audience. The audience would then join in for the song, and zone out after clapping.
Sometimes they were quicker than others, but iconic songs like Sleepyhead were completely drowned out by the tuning/feedback oscillations that they distort into the song. As a critic/escapist, the show was not so good, but I can see a true nerd or a musician that is influenced by Passion Pit loving it.
The venue is also not my favorite. Besides the parking that has torn me away from many-a-concerts, the sterile box of a room that Emo's is just never feels good, the bar is too expensive, and the bands never seem to vibe with the audience. This one is going in my bin of "ahh well I tried Emo's again, and they ruined another band for me"so that I don't have to think about it for another year or so. (Sorry Passion Pit, Caroline Rose, Animal Collective, No Name... and all the other bands that I keep making the mistake to see at Emo's!). I'll go see the next band coming to Emo's in Houston or San Antonio next time, I guess.
