Queens of the Stone Age Background

Queens of the Stone Age got its start in 1996 in Palm Desert, California. Originally, the band called itself Gamma Ray. However, a German metal group already had this name, so Queens of the Stone Age was born. This name came from the nickname of Josh Homme's previous band, Kyuss. The band's musical style is influenced by many rock and metal genres, with macho and German rock styles commonly attributed to it. Later albums incorporate electronic and dance music influences. Queens of the Stone Age had their first concert in Seattle, Washington at the OK Hotel on November 20, 1997. Once they released their self-titled album Queens of the Stone Age, they started touring in 1998. They had their big break when they released their second album, Rated R, in 2000 and got the opportunity to open for Foo Fighters, The Smashing Pumpkins and other high-profile bands. An invite for Ozzfest 2000 came shortly after.

Queens of the Stone Age rock Red Hat

by Mary from Cary on 5/6/24Red Hat Amphitheater - Raleigh

Queens of the Stone Age rocked Red Hat on Thursday, May 2. Josh kept apologizing for canceling their show last year., which was unnecessary. They put on an amazing show in all respects: musically, the band are talented musicians, the light show was perfect, the set list was great and Josh’s chatter was entertaining. I’ve seen some excellent concerts this year but this has to be one of the best shows to date. Queens of the Stone Age set the bar very high for other bands to follow.

    Queens...

by TRISHY on 5/5/24Red Hat Amphitheater - Raleigh

I have seen QOTSA many times over the years. The first time at a small club in Boston after Kyuss had ended. the last time I've seen them was at a club in Boston with Dace Grohl and Mark Lanegan. I'm a big fan. Being up close in the pit section definitely was the best choice. Great show. Great time!

    Had a great time!!

by Tony on 5/5/24Red Hat Amphitheater - Raleigh

I had pit tickets and QOTSA is one of my favorite bands, so paying a bit extra for the pit was a no brainer. The venue was and has always had a magical appeal being downtown. No real gripes for this show, sounded good, good crowd, and a pleasant night for a show.

by Tim B. on 5/5/24Red Hat Amphitheater - Raleigh

They don't make them like they used to. QOTSA killed it. Great crowd interaction and even better set. Go see them.

Great Queens of the Stone Age Show

by Jeremy on 5/5/24Red Hat Amphitheater - Raleigh

Queens sounded great (sound mix was the best I have heard at Red Hat). Royal Blood was an awesome opener and I will be trying to catch them again when they come back.

The band is fantastic and were on fire!

by DLew on 5/5/24Red Hat Amphitheater - Raleigh

Red Hat is a good venue. Downtown watering hole options are numerous prior to tip off, and walking to the show from bar/restaurants is easy. My review is more simply of the band - Josh Homme has been a showman, great guitarist, volcalist, lyricist and general brilliant artist for a long time. His first banks, Kyuss and Screaming Trees, were ground-breaking and unique. Carrying on with Queens of the Stone Age, and playing with an assortment of band participants, has been quite a joyful ride for fans like myself that appreciate a musical genre possibly all to itself. Maybe "alt-metal"? Whatever it is, it's brilliant. And they has a fantastic performance at Red Hat in Raleigh. It had been 20 +/- years since I saw them supporting their album Songs for the Deaf. I hope they continue making records and touring more frequently. I've been cranking all their records every day since the show. Just sooooo good! Thanks, Josh. Most appreciated!!!
