About

Biography by Steve Huey

Dancehall superstar Sean Paul began scoring hit singles in Jamaica starting in 1996 and thereafter steadily began attracting international attention, eventual breaking into the pop mainstream in 2002 with Dutty Rock. Born Sean Paul Henriques on January 8, 1973, the multi-ethnic Paul (his parents had Portuguese, Chinese, and Jamaican blood) grew up comfortably in St. Andrew, Jamaica, his mother a renowned painter. He was a skilled athlete, excelling in swimming and especially water polo, playing for the Jamaican national team in the latter. Although his education was enough to land a prosperous career, dancehall music remained Paul's first love, particularly crafting rhythm tracks. He became a DJ after he began writing his own songs, patterning his style largely after Super Cat and finding a mentor in Don Yute; he also found contacts in several members of the reggae-pop band Third World in 1993, which helped open up business connections.

Paul released his debut single, "Baby Girl," with producer Jeremy Harding in 1996; it proved a significant success, leading to further Jamaican hits like "Nah Get No Bly (One More Try)," "Deport Them," "Excite Me," "Infiltrate," and "Hackle Mi." In 1999, Sean Paul started to make inroads to American audiences; he was first commissioned to collaborate with fellow dancehall hitmaker Mr. Vegas on a production for rapper DMX; titled "Here Comes the Boom," the song was included in director Hype Williams' film Belly. Also that year, Paul scored a Top Ten hit on the Billboard rap charts with "Hot Gal Today." Unfortunately, Paul had a very public falling out with Mr. Vegas over the packaging of the latter's remix of "Hot Gal Today"; still, it didn't slow Paul's career momentum, as he played the Summer Jam 2000 in New York City, the center of his American popularity. That fall, Paul released his first album on VP Records; the sprawling Stage One collected many of Paul's previous hit singles and compilation cuts, plus a few brand-new tracks. 2002's Dutty Rock and 2005's The Trinity were extremely successful. Both albums peaked in the Top Ten of the album chart and featured a handful of mainstream smashes.

    Not worth the price

by Hp on 5/8/24Coca-Cola Roxy - Atlanta

First of all we paid close to $300 for seats in the AA row which we were told had table service, but we did not. Second, could not see anything because Sean Paul was mostly on the risers in the back and didn’t work the stage as much so we could not see him most of the time. But the biggest complaint was that he was only out there for one hour. first of all he had two openers and he started late and then he only sing for an hour, which we were expecting a lot more. I love him and all of his music and I don’t think he did justice for his fans and what we paid.

I got the wool pulled over my eyes, Soo disappointed.

by Lissa M. on 5/8/24Coca-Cola Roxy - Atlanta

I fell victim to the old bait and switch. Live Nation showed the seating chart to see my favorite entertainer Sean Paul at the Coca Cola Roxy, I purchased the $200 seat for a not sold out concert. I assumed according to the seating chart AND video footage of the floor plan, there would be NO ONE seated in front of me. Lo and behold there was an additional table/chairs (which is what I thought I purchased) in front of me and a VERY BIG haired lady stood in front of me the whole damn time. I was already uncomfortable spending $200 on one ticket to be seated in the wrong seating plan. Such a disappointment, I literally cried, especially because it was my first time there and I could’ve used that money to buy my kids groceries. I will NEVER go back to this venue or another concert again.

    Amazing Concert 👏🏻

by Trish on 5/8/24Coca-Cola Roxy - Atlanta

Sean Paul was one of the best concerts I have ever been to! The environment and vibe in that room was unmatched! Danced from start to finish and couldn't have been happier if I tried. Venue was just the right size, many bars so drinks were available quickly and the staff was nice too. Not a single complaint!

    Not worth the money

by Disappointed Fan on 5/8/24Coca-Cola Roxy - Atlanta

1st - 15 mins late getting started 2nd - There were 4… yes 4 opening acts! Only 2 were actually good. 3rd - Opening acts 1 1/2 hrs, Sean Paul 1 hr 4th - He blew through the set and only sung 2 - 3 songs all the way through. Everything else was mash ups. 5th - Kept bring long DJs to hype up crowd but then bring out a low key act. Too much DJ not enough of what we came to see Very disappointed and not worth the money spent. Only positives were Farina & back up dancers were fantastic!

    Sean Paul Concert

by Angie on 5/7/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

This concert took disappointment to the depths of hell. I’m still in disbelief that I paid for a reggae concert and spent the night listening to mostly Latin music. I was expecting a real dancehall experience but instead got a watered down version of dancehall made palatable for the white and Hispanic people in the audience. Sean Paul should be ashamed. He was also 2 hours late and only performed for an hour. Save yourself the disappointment if you’re a true fan of dancehall.
