About

Biography by Steve Huey

Dancehall superstar Sean Paul began scoring hit singles in Jamaica starting in 1996 and thereafter steadily began attracting international attention, eventual breaking into the pop mainstream in 2002 with Dutty Rock. Born Sean Paul Henriques on January 8, 1973, the multi-ethnic Paul (his parents had Portuguese, Chinese, and Jamaican blood) grew up comfortably in St. Andrew, Jamaica, his mother a renowned painter. He was a skilled athlete, excelling in swimming and especially water polo, playing for the Jamaican national team in the latter. Although his education was enough to land a prosperous career, dancehall music remained Paul's first love, particularly crafting rhythm tracks. He became a DJ after he began writing his own songs, patterning his style largely after Super Cat and finding a mentor in Don Yute; he also found contacts in several members of the reggae-pop band Third World in 1993, which helped open up business connections.

Paul released his debut single, "Baby Girl," with producer Jeremy Harding in 1996; it proved a significant success, leading to further Jamaican hits like "Nah Get No Bly (One More Try)," "Deport Them," "Excite Me," "Infiltrate," and "Hackle Mi." In 1999, Sean Paul started to make inroads to American audiences; he was first commissioned to collaborate with fellow dancehall hitmaker Mr. Vegas on a production for rapper DMX; titled "Here Comes the Boom," the song was included in director Hype Williams' film Belly. Also that year, Paul scored a Top Ten hit on the Billboard rap charts with "Hot Gal Today." Unfortunately, Paul had a very public falling out with Mr. Vegas over the packaging of the latter's remix of "Hot Gal Today"; still, it didn't slow Paul's career momentum, as he played the Summer Jam 2000 in New York City, the center of his American popularity. That fall, Paul released his first album on VP Records; the sprawling Stage One collected many of Paul's previous hit singles and compilation cuts, plus a few brand-new tracks. 2002's Dutty Rock and 2005's The Trinity were extremely successful. Both albums peaked in the Top Ten of the album chart and featured a handful of mainstream smashes.

Mediocre concert but we made it a good time!

by A.S. on 5/6/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

The Sean Paul concert in Miami was nothing like I expected it to be. Thankfully me and my girls know how to turn up and have a good time regardless. I was expecting more Carribean people to be in attendance just like his music videos in the early 2000s. But there were more Hispanics and the opening act and DJ catered to that group. Sean Paul was 2 hours late and only performed for 1 hour just like so many previous concert reviews warned us about. In the future (although I doubt that I will ever attend another SP concert), Sean Paul and the DJs should consider diversifying the music for all backgrounds. If I knew I would be listening to mainly reggaeton, latin music most of the night at a "Jamaican"dancehall concert, I would've never purchased tickets. Other than that, I'm glad I went with a group of women who can make lemonade out of lemons.

    Not worth it!

Waited over 2 hours for him to show up. The set up and filler performances were a let down.

    Sean Paul still kickin’ it!

by Raz on 5/6/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

Sean Paul brought the energy, from the beginning to the end. His stage presence was fantastic. He’s still able to perform at a high level. The whole show felt like a dancehall bashment party.

    Nostalgic

by Camila on 5/6/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami Beach

So the tour was definitely nostalgic but I did expect more. For opening he had a do, then Karol F , & even got his 2 cousins to open for him. I was expecting a lot more especially since he’s done sooo many collabs. Should’ve called them up to help him with the tour

This was by far one of THE BEST concerts I’ve ever been to. Sean Paul put on an AMAZING show! Everything about the concert was on point! The dancers, the Dj and Sean Paul brought an energy to the venue that very few performers can do! WELL DONE, and hopefully you will come back to Orlando in a larger venue! WE WANT MORE💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

    OK of a Night

by PSam on 5/5/24House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

The entrance process was simple and stress free. We paid for Fast Lane entrance but no one ever checked for those and we got in without them. The tickets indicated that the show would start at 7pm - even though we knew it would not. There was no DJ to get the crowd in the party mood. Instead we stood for almost 2 hours listening to some odd music selection. Then the opening act came on and sadly she was very sub-par. Another performer came on soon after and he livened up the crowd a bit but like Sean Paul the sound was horrible. Finally Sean Paul came to the stage and while everyone was terribly excited the sound was absolutely horrible. We probably got to hear the first few notes of the songs and then it went all downhill. The music was way way way too loud. I am a fan of Sean Paul but this was disappointing. In addition he came to the stage late - the norm it appears to be lately - and then started asking for more stage time. It was at that point I left the facility. Overall a very disappointing concert experience.

    Good show-Nothing mind blowing

by Cookie86a on 5/5/24House of Blues Orlando - Orlando

I’ve been a Sean Paul fan for more years than I’d like to say. It was a good show-nothing mind blowing-no special effects-or anything special-or out of the ordinary. House of Blues Disney Springs is definitely not my favorite venue for concerts. You stand unless you pay $$$$$$$ for an actual seat. It gets hot and crowded. Drinks are pricey-as expected. The sound is not that good. View is not great. We went to see him and that’s what we got.
