About

The Walnut Street Theatre production Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a Philadelphia tradition!  The holiday magic begins when a troupe of actors appear at the historic Walnut Street Theatre to set up and perform the heartwarming tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. We all know this grumpy old miser's response to holiday cheer is "Bah, Humbug." Scrooge is a bitter old man who can no longer feel joy or affection, even for his family. But on one remarkable Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. With their help, can Scrooge change his ways? You and your favorite kids are in for a treat with a special hour-long adaptation which uses original and traditional songs to highlight Dickens' powerful story. Deck the halls as our holiday spirits travel beyond the footlights, right into your very own heart.

  • Christmas Carol

    by Soccermom8 on 12/18/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Show was a delight for all ages. Cast did a terrific job and singing voices were such a treat. Sound quality was only disappointment for balcony seats and disruptive viewers surrounding us. Also, disappointed in Walnut St. Theatre for not controlling the beverage/food in theater because the other viewers opened bags of pretzels and juice bags for children throwout show making unpleasant to concentrate on the story line. Having been a long time standing member of this theater I was shocked that this has become so lack, for in past years was always stressed prior and at intermission of performances. Show was well worth the money and great Christmas gift for a family outing.

  • A Chirstmas Carol is confusing for young kids

    by StNick1225 on 12/18/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

I enthusiastically bought tickets to the performance of "A Christmas Carol", mainly to introduce my kids to theater at a very special time of year. I know the story of "A Christmas Carol", but my 8 & 9 year old did not. Introducing your children to such a detailed story line in the form of a musical production, where the actors have British accents and use lingo from 18 century was just too difficult for my kids to understand. They were lost most of the performance and I found myself trying to explain things. The performance itself was great, engaging, enthusiastic actors. Some of the effects (chains rattling) drowned out the actors lines though. The length of the performace was perfect for kids, maybe a bit too fast paced though.

My kids really liked the show. It was an hour long - which was perfect for their attention span. The songs were great - I just wish there were more.

  • A Christmas Carol was engaging

We took our 6-year old grandson to see his first professional production, A Christmas Carol. We were a little worried that his attention might wander, but our concerns proved unfounded; through most of the play he leaned forward in his seat and followed the action closely. And we enjoyed the show as well. It was well done and we would recommend it.

Great show for the family and comfortable theater.

  • Cast was fantastic!

    by Annie718 on 12/17/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

The play was enjoyable. The late comers were disruptive, unlike plays with breaks, they were allowed to be seated, which was understandable. When the ghost of Marley shows up the noise from the chains and the drum drown out the actors voices. I thought at some point the chains and the gong would quiet down until necessary, but having it through the whole speech, we couldnt hear a word. All in all, the kids loved it. Keep up the great work. Thanks.

  • Play was great but not really for young kids.

by Anonymous on 12/17/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I think that the show was fantastic but I had to explain what was happening the whole way thru. I appreciate the use of the charles dickens language but it was very hard to follow at times for my kids. Also the ghost of marley seemed to be presented a little scarier than necessary. My daughter was shaking and clinging to me.

  • My son said it was awesome!

by Mamahang on 12/10/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

We saw the show with our two children, ages 7 and 8. They absolutely loved it. The length of the show was just perfect. They were amazed with the production and we all enjoyed the story line. The actors and actresses were superb! Unfortunately, patrons talking, receiving loud cell phone calls, and dropping glass containers really distracted us from the show and prevented us from really getting "in the moment". It's unfortunate that other adults couldn't monitor themselves appropriately.

  • Christmas Carol was good family fun

    by Pokerboy2 on 12/10/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

The Walunt's Christmas Carol was a very nice family event. However, the crying babies were too much. A note for the ignorant; if your baby is crying leave the theatre or better yet, leave them with a sitter. That way you, your older child and everyone around you can enjoy the show!

I enjoyed the show. I brought 7 kids with me, ages 4-11. They did not follow or understand the show. They started to get rammy half way through. It is advertised as a children's show and I felt it should have been geared for younger children to understand.

  • WST's a Christmas Carol was Outstanding

by GBFam on 12/10/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

A great show! The kids were captivated, the adults were smiling. The cast did a great job from their singing to facial expressions. The voices were amazing, Scrooge was authentic. A 1 hour play was perfect for small children and there was enough going on onstage to hold your interest. Loved the ghosts, each brought a unique flavor to their character. Thanks for a great show!!

  • Christmas Carol

A Christmas Carol was great. The little boy who played Tiny Tim was excellent. The show was very well done.

  • Very Good Rendition of A Christmas Carol

by JConklin on 12/9/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

The set was beautiful. The choreography was excellent. The cast was well chosen. Overall it was a great production. Two minor comments: 1. The songs seemed out of place. It really wasn't a musical and the songs seemed to sometimes come in at strange places. 2. The Friday afternoon showing was mostly for schools. Although they were mostly well-behaved, we probably would have gone to a different showing had we known.
