About

The Walnut Street Theatre production Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a Philadelphia tradition!  The holiday magic begins when a troupe of actors appear at the historic Walnut Street Theatre to set up and perform the heartwarming tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. We all know this grumpy old miser's response to holiday cheer is "Bah, Humbug." Scrooge is a bitter old man who can no longer feel joy or affection, even for his family. But on one remarkable Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. With their help, can Scrooge change his ways? You and your favorite kids are in for a treat with a special hour-long adaptation which uses original and traditional songs to highlight Dickens' powerful story. Deck the halls as our holiday spirits travel beyond the footlights, right into your very own heart.

  • It is good for kids

    by My4bambini on 12/19/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

I frequent the theater and while I did not expect too too much as the tickets were only $15; I did expect a better sound system. The kids in the audience were so noisy that a better sound system would of at least made a better experience. I felt that Scrooge was well played. It was a production that was equivalent to a high school production.

  • A wonderful live version of a classic story!

by HWayne on 12/19/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

The cast did a terrific job of telling the whole tale with minimal props and sets. Many cast members played multiple roles, but did it very well. The story moved along well, without feeling rushed - show lasted 1 hour. We enjoyed it and would come again!

  • Very Loud Christmas Carol

by GrandRoy on 12/19/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 2 out of 5

I took my 4 year old grandson. It was a BIG mistake. I had thought the one hour version of the Christmas Carol was geared toward children. When the actors came out on the stage, the first thing that happened was they put Jacob Marley in his coffine which I think my grandson missed. Then the singing started. The volume was startingly loud. I was shocked. It frightened my grandson so much, he started shrieking in fear and we had to leave the theatre less than 5 minutes after the performance began. I have taken other grandchildren to the Little Orchestra and to the one hour Nutcracker in NYC. An adult comes out on stage to explain what will happen in terms of noise and darkness. I would think that exercise would benefit your version. This production is not suitable for children under 10 years old and should be labeled as such.' VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!!!

Excellent show to see to get into the Christmas spirit.

  • It was decent

by Thadd on 12/18/11Walnut Street Theater - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

The play performance was decent and, overall, done well. At times, the lines were hard to understand; it seems the lines were spoken too quickly. The essence of the time-long and honored story by Dickens was alive and well. However, the entire play itself rang true to that of an amateur production to be likened to that of a school production. It was not what we were expecting from a Walnut Street Theater performance. However, it was evident that the actors were doing their best with minimal props and time. This was most definitely a play for families with children (especially a first play). My only gripe then would be, change the word choice as many small children do not know the words used at times. Perhaps make the language more child-friendly. This seems to add to the one area of confusion in this play; target audience. Make it more clear who the target audience is comprised and then alter where necessary.

A little rushed, a few cues were off, and too many loose musical numbers. Wasn't at all what I was expecting for a Charles Dickens play. lights were great. creative use of the set, but overall the story was hurried and if I hadn't already the story I would have been very confused.

  • Annual Christmas Show for Our Family

    by Attendee654 on 12/17/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

For a few years we had a subscription to the Walnut, but gave them up this year as we anticipated our new theatre to be completed in town. Unfortunately, it is not. Anyhow, we did travel up this week to see the annual performance of The Christmas Carol. As always, we enjoyed ourselves. All seats in the theatre have good views. The performance, designed for children, was well executed. The staff was helpful and friendly. We will be back again when a show strikes our fancy. The one drawback is parking. The theatre has none. The lot right next door is replete with stories I could tell. Each time we park there there is an episode. This past time was the $18 for the 75 minutes we were parked there. Sheesh! Arrive early and park two blocks away.

  • Community players quality

by handbell on 12/17/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

I took a group of students to see this production. We are studying the story in class, and I thought it would be a nice field trip, especially during this time of year. I got a good response from my kids (7th/8th grades), but I wasn't as pleased as I expected to be. In the opening number, especially, the singers were out of tune, and I had trouble understanding quite a few of the lines throughout. It wasn't that they were delivered too quickly, but the overall sound balance wasn't as good as I expected. To be honest, it seemed more like a community theater production than a professional one. As a musician, I was mostly disappointed with the pitch issues. However, there were some good things that happened throughout, so I won't let it deter me from coming again.

  • A CHRISTMAS CAROL

by KNOBBI on 12/16/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 2 out of 5

WHEN WE ARRIVED FOR THE PLAY WE WERE SURPRISED TO SEE MANY BUSES LINED DOWN WALNUT ST. I MUST ADMIT WHEN I SAW THE TIME FOR THE SHOW (10:30)I THOUGHT ABOUT KIDS BUT NOT SCHOOL TRIPS. WE BROUGHT MY SISTER-IN-LAW FOR HER BIRTHDAY AND THEN TO LUNCH AND I ASSUMED MAYBE THIS WAS FOR FAMILIES TO BRING THEIR KIDS. KNOW RIGHT FROM THE START THAT I HAVE A LOT OF COMPASSION FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN SO THIS IS NOT ABOUT THINGS THEY CANNOT CONTROL ITS ABOUT THE DISTRACTIONS WHILE TRY TO WATCH THE PLAY. WE HAD CHILDREN SCREAMING, MOANLY, CRYING AND JUST FUSSING ABOUT. THIS WAS VERY DISTRACTING. I BELIEVE THE THEATER SHOULD MAKE KNOWN THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE THAT MORNING TIMESE COULD RESULT IN THESE SITUATIONS.

  • Great theater, fair performance

by fstv on 12/14/11walnut street theater - PhiladelphiaRating: 2 out of 5

The theater and the story are wonderful, but this performance did not thrill. Good for children and families if they already know the story. I think if you were seeing this story for the first time ever you would not know what was going on. The acting seemed hurried and the lines spoken were at times hard to understand. There is very little set changing going on, with the same prop used over and over. There were microphone issues (not being on at first or loud enough at the start of someone speaking). The music to the songs are taped, no orchestra. For the price of the tickets, and if you don't expect more than a theme park type performance, then it would be worth your time. If you are expecting the type of performance like les mis, then you will be sorely disappointed.

  • "A Christmas Carol"

by gretathedog on 12/5/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

We enjoyed the presentation very much. At the appropriate times, the story was humorous and horrifying. My only criticism had to do with the sound. Even sitting in the orchestra, it was difficult to understand the words at numerous points.

Great Performance from a novice cast! Loved the scene with the ghost of Marley, well done!

  • by Anonymous on 12/5/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

The show was very good for the short amount of time they had to perform the entire version of the Christmas carol. We did not take any children but the only thing I saw as a downfall was that the ghost of Marley was a little scary but none of the children around seemed to be scared or crying. Also, some of the words I thought would be hard for children to understand but I know it was part of the times back then. We really enjoyed the show!

  • A must see family show

The Walnut Street Theater's production of a Christmas Carol is a must see for families with young children. The costumes, music, and sets are beautiful and the acting, singing and dancing are very professional. Skip the movies and take your children to see this at The Walnut Street Theater.
