About

The Walnut Street Theatre production Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a Philadelphia tradition!  The holiday magic begins when a troupe of actors appear at the historic Walnut Street Theatre to set up and perform the heartwarming tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. We all know this grumpy old miser's response to holiday cheer is "Bah, Humbug." Scrooge is a bitter old man who can no longer feel joy or affection, even for his family. But on one remarkable Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. With their help, can Scrooge change his ways? You and your favorite kids are in for a treat with a special hour-long adaptation which uses original and traditional songs to highlight Dickens' powerful story. Deck the halls as our holiday spirits travel beyond the footlights, right into your very own heart.

  • A Christmas Carol was very enjoyable.

Price of seats was very affordable. Good view from the seats. My family and I really enjoyed the very professional acting and singing. Was very glad to be able to park right next to the Theatre. Thank you for the memories my family and me were able to make that day and to enjoy a very special part of the Christmas Season to us. Keep up the good work and God bless you all. Remember, Jesus is the Reason for the Season. Merry Christmas,

Great family show esp. for boys since other holiday shows tend to be geared more for girls (i.e. Nutcracker) Only one hour long, great price for professional theatre! Go see it!

  • An entertaining take on the classic!

by dougdaweb on 12/3/12Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

The Christmas Carol is a staple of the Christmas scene, however it is rare to be able to witness a good telling of the tale live on-stage in under an hour. The wizards at the Walnut Street Theater have managed to do just that! Using a cast that was clearly enjoying their task they presented a well done enjoyable and entertaining take on this classic and one that I would highly recommend to anyone that can make the show. And since it is only an hour long, a lot of people should be able to make it!

enjoyed the show the characters and setting were quite colorful the actors did agreat job of bringing the story to life but the show itself was very short i mean by the time we were seated play was almost over wish they would have added more traditional christmas songs to give the show a more holiday feel the play did not catch the attention of my children who range in age of 3 - 15

  • The best audience ever.

by littlecindymac on 12/22/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

A movie or a play of "A Christmas Carol" will never be the same for me after attending this performance. The actors and the scene changes were great - I love the way it was done. The majority of the audience was composed of early elementary school children, and THAT WAS WHAT MADE THE SHOW SO AWESOME!

  • Christmas Carol was....just OK

    by mynie21 on 12/22/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

The play was okay. A little disappointing since I took my sons and niece, as a Christmas gift. I have seen better plays at the Walnut Theater. It was difficult to hear what the actors were saying many times. I was also upset to discover, too late, that I'd have to watch the play with MANY school children. We sat behind a large group of high school kids who were texting, yelling, talking, and playing around the entire time. You should NOT sell tickets to the public on a day that most of the theater is filled with school children. The play seemed very rushed and it was over in the blink of an eye. Scrooge was AWESOME, though! Kidos to him!

  • Celebrate true meaning of Christmas!

by KathleenandRon on 12/20/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

We really enjoyed this show, about the true meaning of Christmas! Cast were all likeable and energetic! Christmas Future was a little scary for small children.

  • A Christmas Carol was wonderful

I took my teenage daughter to see A Christmas Carol over the weekend. I truly enjoyed it. The actors did an amazing job. What is even more amazing .. my teenage daughter loved it. She has been bitten by the bug. She wants to see more plays. The venue was the perfect size..our seats couldn't have been better. Truly a great experience.

  • A Christmas Carol

by JRDD on 12/20/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

My boyfriend and I took my 4 year old niece to see this show. She watched with wide-eyes for the full duration of the show. There was a nice mixture of acting/songs/dancing. The storyline was a little "over her head" because of her age, but she really enjoyed it! I also thought that the time length was perfect for young children like her, she did not become antsy at all! My boyfriend and I also enjoyed it and thought it was a nice festive activity! The show started promptly on the hour so beware, be there on time!!!

  • Wonderful Christmas tradition! Christmas Carol

by Aprilsies on 12/20/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I brought my 3 year old and her 3 year old cousin. Along with my sister in laws. You can sit anywhere in the audience and you would be able to see perfectly. It was such a wonderful experience ... I think we will make it a Christmas Tradition for just the girls! The play was wonderful ... exciting, funny, wonderful music and songs! Such a treat and the price was incredible.

  • Wonderful Rendition

    by Peach1021 on 12/19/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Our family truly enjoyed the presentation of A Christmas Carol. I thought the cast was wonderful. They were so easily understood and the singing was awesome. The costumes and set were perfect. I'd like to make one comment about a particular cast member, Dominic Santos. Dominic was helping in my daughter's theater class on Saturdays and she insisted she come see him. He was so great. She was on the edge of her seat with a huge smile everytime Dominic had a line or a song to sing. We were so pleased.

  • Good but not best

I loved the show but I hate the women's dresses. =)

  • Not what I expected....

    by wife2dondi on 12/19/11Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

I've been attending this play and others at WST for years! Unfortunately, this is the first year where I CANNOT rave about the performance!! Many of the actors seemed uncomfortable on stage and 3 of the actors where OFF PITCH!!! That is something I expect from a school play NOT a PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE that I paid hard earned money to see. I expected to enjoy this play with my son and my husband (who attended for the 1st time); now I am left with a feeling of outrage that I spent our money on the performance. WHAT IS GOING ON THERE AT WST?? Have you run out of performers who can act and sing professionally??
