About

The Walnut Street Theatre production Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a Philadelphia tradition!  The holiday magic begins when a troupe of actors appear at the historic Walnut Street Theatre to set up and perform the heartwarming tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. We all know this grumpy old miser's response to holiday cheer is "Bah, Humbug." Scrooge is a bitter old man who can no longer feel joy or affection, even for his family. But on one remarkable Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. With their help, can Scrooge change his ways? You and your favorite kids are in for a treat with a special hour-long adaptation which uses original and traditional songs to highlight Dickens' powerful story. Deck the halls as our holiday spirits travel beyond the footlights, right into your very own heart.

Saw Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol with my sister and her 3 kids. We enjoyed every moment! The cast was spectacular and the costumes were divine! We shared a wonderful holiday experience that we will remember for many years to come!

  • Great show!

    by Dorrie24 on 12/17/16Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

This is advertised as a kids show so there were a lot of kids in the audience but my adult daughter and I were looking for some entertainment in Philly and happened upon this show. Surprisingly the show held the attention of the children and they were very quiet the whole time. We both really enjoyed it, too. Appeals to both young and old. They did a great job of telling this story in just an hour! Great talent, too!

  • A Christmas Carol...like no other!

by jswirs on 12/14/16Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

All the actors were outstanding, I did not hear anyone miss a line. I loved the sound and visual effects as the three different ghost of Christmas were introduced.

  • Adorable rendition of A Christmas Carol!

I love the atmosphere of the smaller theaters and this one is a gem!

  • Too scary for young kids!

by Krishi on 12/13/16Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

While the cast, choreography, music and set were wonderful, the show was too scary for the many little children in the audience. As soon as Marley appeared in flashes of light, loud clanging, mummy costume and chains, kids throughout the theatre started to cry and climb onto their mothers' laps. They were terrified he would return for the rest of the show. The producers should have kept their young audience in mind and toned down the Marley character. I also found the actors hard to understand from the balcony. Only take your older kids to this show and prepare them ahead of time!

  • Absolutely wonderful!

I took my 10 year old grandson...it kept his interest the entire time, especially all the ghosts! The music, costuming and acting was top notch! I highly recommend it for anyone in the family for ages 8 and above!

  • Amazing production!

    by Laurab56 on 11/30/16Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

This was a great production! Outstanding cast, gorgeous sets. True to story adaptation. My Only word of caution would be to avoid taking small children, as in under 5, or even older children if they are easily scared. There are loud scary thunder and lightning effects that herald the arrival of the ghosts, there is a ghoulish Jacob Marley in chains, and a grim reaper. Young children may definitely find it scary, and a few started crying during our show. But for older kids and adults, it's a don't miss!

Loved it! Actors were wonderful! 1 hour show was perfect in length. Left plenty of afternoon to enjoy Philadelphia.

  • Very well done!

by Diofpa on 11/29/16Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

After I bought tickets, I noticed it was a "children's" play and only a 60 min production. I was nervous on my 13'year old son and 11 year old daughter enjoying. (Note: Christmas Carol" is my all time favorite book, movie, play). It surpassed expectations. Wonderful condensed rendition and beautiful performances. Both kids really liked it!! I would rate a 4.5.

  • Great Kickoff for the Christmas season!

Acting and singing were great, a good feel throughout.

  • Recommend this show

Good rendition in a 1 act stage show. We brought our kids ages 6,4,2 and they were into it the entire show even the "scary" parts. I liked that the verses stayed fairly true to the book...that has gotten lost in many of the modern versions of the story. Well done show.

A magical performance. The cast was outstanding. The set was wonderful! All of the spirits shined...especially that of Christmas present. And of course, Mr. Scrooge was captivating.

  • update needed

if this show is going to be advertised for young children, then maybe consider toning down the old English language, some of which I had a hard time following. if young children are to understand what is happening, especially at the fast pace that this show is moving then they should be able to comprehend the verbiage. I brought 6 children with me, ages 4 to 9 and other than the sound and visual effects, which helped to keep their attention, they got glazed eyes from the interaction of character's, because they could not understand. trying to explain to them, was tough due to fast pace. great cast of performers.

Excellent! The children and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Actors, set - all very well done. Thank you!

A very entertaining Christmas show for the whole family! Actor who played scrooge stole the show! I would refer anyone to add this show to their holiday traditions..My one suggestion would be when the actors are asking for a donation for the theaters youth programs as patrons are leaving the show, the members also give out a candy cane to each person as a festive reminder of the event especially for the kids!!
