About

The Walnut Street Theatre production Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a Philadelphia tradition!  The holiday magic begins when a troupe of actors appear at the historic Walnut Street Theatre to set up and perform the heartwarming tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. We all know this grumpy old miser's response to holiday cheer is "Bah, Humbug." Scrooge is a bitter old man who can no longer feel joy or affection, even for his family. But on one remarkable Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. With their help, can Scrooge change his ways? You and your favorite kids are in for a treat with a special hour-long adaptation which uses original and traditional songs to highlight Dickens' powerful story. Deck the halls as our holiday spirits travel beyond the footlights, right into your very own heart.

  • A fun but short musical

by Cat on 12/19/23Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

Walnut Street Theater's version of A Christmas Carol was a fun performance of one my favorite Christmas stories by Charles Dickens. I feel the production could have depicted a bit more detail with the ghost of the Christmas present than they did; however I enjoyed the acting but felt it was a little too short of a performance. All in all I found it an enjoyable experience. Thank you to the Walnut for showing this because in 2022 they did not have this performance.

  • Warms my heart for Christmas

by Bobski on 12/13/23Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas Carol at Walnut St theater. The costumes were fabulous. The music was beautiful, but the inclusion of Christmas carols was what warmed my soul. This story changed England into a city that took care of its poor and destitute. It had that much of an effect on the people then, and it had that much effect on us too. Many thanks to the sponsors of this classic story for all ages.

  • Wonderful show

by Kim on 12/5/23Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

This show was the perfect way to kick start the Christmas season. Brought our 4 and 6 year old sons, and they loved it (especially the 6 year old). The one hour length was great, and we loved hearing familiar Christmas carols throughout. The acting was really top notch!

We took our daughter and husband and their two sons ages 9 and 6. We were hoping that the show would be more aimed at the children's level, but the words were straight from Dickens. The 6 year old was lost about half way through the show. I personally thought that the show was great and I enjoyed, but then I am a little older than 6.

  • Well done show, at a family friendly price!

    by M. J. on 12/24/18Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

This was a one hour 10:30 am Friday holiday show, and was practically sold out, despite being a last minute addition to the Walnut Street Theatre's schedule. Most of the actors were local to Philadelphia, and many children were able to attend, thanks to the very lost cost $20 tickets. Extremely well done, with lots of special effects, including an avalanche of evaporating snow flakes at the very end. I'm coming back to see "Pinkalicious" in April. We need more of these fun one hour shows.

  • A Christmas Carol

Everything was great. The acting was believable and the actors made it seems like you're actually in the play.

  • Rushed

by Bevm on 12/5/17Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

I felt as though the cast rushed through the production (probably because Annie was right after). It was hard for my 8 year old niece to hear and follow along. I have taken the kids to see "A Christmas Carol" at different venues and this was our least favorite.

  • True to the book, true to life

by ShakenMartinii on 12/5/17Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I brought my 5 year old niece to the theater for the first time. She said, "It was kinda scary, but I liked it." Jacob Marley was amazing. You could feel his howls of anguish and torment. I love Victorian literature, and every meaningful detail from the novel was included in this play. Furthermore, the diversity of the cast enchanted my niece. She saw children her own age on stage. The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present were played by people of color, and for my biracial niece, I think seeing herself represented on stage was engaging. When the ghost of Christmas Past appeared, my niece cried out, "She's so pretty!" and she talked about her on our way back home. All in all, I found my own natural tendency towards humbugging had dissipated, and I, too, pledged to keep Christmas in my heart all through the year.

  • Couldn't decipher what the actors were saying

    by Comeonnow1 on 12/5/17Walnut Street Theatre - PhiladelphiaRating: 3 out of 5

This is the second year in a row that our family found the dialogue indecipherable. The sound was loud enough, but it was not clear. My daughter, not being familiar with the story had no idea what was going on. It was touted as a child-friendly play but I didn't think so at all. We will skip it next year. Interesting that we are asked to share pictures for this review, when the venue had a "no photos" policy.

  • Fabulous!! The best yet.

My friends and I go every year and I must say this year was the BEST I have ever seen! I wish I could go back and see it again.
