I brought my 5 year old niece to the theater for the first time. She said, "It was kinda scary, but I liked it." Jacob Marley was amazing. You could feel his howls of anguish and torment.
I love Victorian literature, and every meaningful detail from the novel was included in this play.
Furthermore, the diversity of the cast enchanted my niece. She saw children her own age on stage. The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present were played by people of color, and for my biracial niece, I think seeing herself represented on stage was engaging. When the ghost of Christmas Past appeared, my niece cried out, "She's so pretty!" and she talked about her on our way back home.
All in all, I found my own natural tendency towards humbugging had dissipated, and I, too, pledged to keep Christmas in my heart all through the year.
