About

LETTUCE is (a) the prime ingredient in a salad, (b) a slang for cash, (c) a green herb that can be smoked, (d) a genre-busting six-member musical collective formed in 1992 by four alumni of the prestigious Berklee College Of Music, or (e) all of the above. If you answered "e," then you're in on the sheer magic of a band that both feeds the rich history of funk and combines it with strains of hip-hop, rock, psychedelia, jazz, soul, jam, go-go, and the avant-garde.

The GRAMMY Award-nominated six-piece is comprised of Adam Deitch [drums, percussion, arrangement], Adam "Shmeeans" Smirnoff [guitar], Erick "Jesus" Coomes [bass], Ryan Zoidis [alto, baritone, tenor sax, Korg X-911], Eric "Benny" Bloom [trumpet, horns], and Nigel Hall [vocals, Hammond B-3, Rhodes, clavinet, keyboards].  To date, their discography includes Outta Here [2002], Rage! [2008], Fly [2012], Crush [2015], the EP Mt. Crushmore [2016], the live album Witches Stew [2017], Elevate [2019], Resonate [2020], Unify [2022], and now VIBE - a single 48 minute continuous session of pure, free-flowing improvisation, available digitally for the first time.

With VIBE, Lettuce cement their status as boundary-pushing innovators three decades into their lauded career, blurring lines and smashing up jazz chords, psychedelic passages, big horns, strains of soul and go-go, hip-hop elements for an uplifting, improvisational sound all their own. Ryan Zoidis explains, "we got into a vibe and hit record. 48 minutes went by like a blink of an eye. This is our first purely improvised recording. Nothing planned, nothing edited or overdubbed. This is a true spontaneous musical expression captured in its entirety."

All together now... Lett us VIBE.

  • Music was incredible, however too crowded

by Packedhouse on 2/27/18Saint Andrews Hall - DetroitRating: 3 out of 5

First, Lettuce and Galactic killed it. These are two highly underrated bands that can hold there own. Zero complaints about the music and look forward to seeing them both again in the future. It was way too crowded at this event. No complaints against the staff or security personnel; they did their job just fine and showed great organization and professionalism. It was simply too crowded, which is a testament to how good the bands are, however the sheer amount of people made it difficult to focus on the music. It was definitely a mood killer and very uncomfortable. These bands need to be in a larger venue than St Andrews Hall.

Amazing group of talented musicians. I’d seen a few of them in other bands and really enjoyed them together as Lettuce. Will see them next time they come through.

ALWAYS an epic show. Every time I think Lettuce can't do better than the last time I saw them, they consistently prove me wrong. 100% Funk!! That's all that really needs to be said... Go see them!! You won't regret it, but you will regret missing this live.

  • Impossible to stand still

by cyclemadness on 8/16/17Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This was the first Lettuce show for me and I've already bought tickets to their show at the Maine State Pier next month. Cool, cool band of excellent musicians and a sound, a flavor you get into from the first sound you hear. Two hours of fun...

  • Lettuce Unbelievable!

by BLKDMD on 8/16/17Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

These guys were amazing! They sound better than I saw them two years ago at the House of Blues. Looking forward to the next time!

  • Extremely Funky

by TheBigBurrito on 3/21/17Teragram Ballroom - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Russ Liquid Test (opening band): groovy, dancable, funky 3 piece. These guys put on a great performance. Lettuce: WOW. Extremely tight horn section, killer bass, funky drums. They played a really amazing set. The whole crowd was moving. Amazing! Teragram Ballroom: pretty small space, got way too crowded when Lettuce played. The sound was excellent, not too loud, not too quiet, all the instruments were clearly audible. 3 bars total meant no wait for beers. The one thing this venue lacks is a patio area. To get any fresh air, you have to go out front to the sidewalk, on a roped-off area, which meant you couldn't bring your beer outside.

  • Lettuce was limp

by Beardedscitpek on 3/21/17Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 2 out of 5

I've not seen these guys before, but have checked out some of their CDS and thought they were pretty funky. I also checked out some u tube tracks of live playing. Again found them to be pretty funky. At this show they seemed to have misplaced their funk. They were tight as a band, but didn't leave any space in the music and funk is more defined by what is NOT played (the requisite space) than by what IS played. The volume was too high, so when they tried to bring it down dynamically, it was still just blaring. So their dynamics were rendered ineffective. Overall disappointing...

  • Lettuce Turnip the Beets!

  • Great Show

by JoeyMillman on 1/22/17Jannus Live - St PetersburgRating: 5 out of 5

Caught Lettuce at Jannus Live in St. Pete. They were awesome...a lot of energy, got the crowd excited. I find that the current funk scene is about as close to classic rock as you can get live these days and really enjoyed the show. The venue was great as well.

  • Let us have lettuce!

by HornbandsRock on 1/2/17State Theatre - PortlandRating: 1 out of 5

Let us have lettuce! Once again I want to hear a wonderful band and was very disappointed with the sound mix. Why is it such a challenge for the sound guys to realize that their job Is to provide balance for each voice in the band? Once again too much bass drum and too much reverb on the bass covers everything else. Vocals and lead guitar were muddy at best and forget about hearing the horns. Lettuce is known for being a horn band with a hometown boy on saxophone! I should not have to strain to hear them! Also, I DID vote to legalize marijuana. I did NOT vote to legalize indoor smoking in public places!!! If you going to have a no smoking policy at the state theater then you need to enforce it!!! Smoking is smoking. Regardless of which plant material you're burning it's still creates an inhospitable environment for most people. I had to leave early just so I can find someplace to breathe!

  • by Ragecage on 10/18/16Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - DenverRating: 5 out of 5

Wow lettuce absolutely threw down at the Fillmore. Their shoes are always very theatrical and flawless. Tauk was an amazing opener

  • holy mother of god, it was the best

    by lettucehead2727 on 9/25/16Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

Stop whatever you are doing right now and go see them. It was the best concert I've ever been to. They played all the best songs and had tons of improv/solos that made it a super concert.

  • Very funky!

by BebopB on 9/25/16Tralf - BuffaloRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! The whole room was dancing and grooving. Lettuce was so tight and funky it was impossible to sit still.

  • Lettuce was off the chart GREAT!!!!!!!!

    by Beast811 on 7/17/16The Paramount - HuntingtonRating: 5 out of 5

All jams and all incredible. They played almost 3 hours with one short break. Don't miss them if you get a chance to see them

  • Groove Sauce for the Soul

by RichPiffkins on 7/17/16The Paramount - HuntingtonRating: 4 out of 5

There's a particular feeling to Lettuce's style of funk that makes it hard to stand still to. When it hits you the mind and body cease to be two separate entities and instead join as one vehicle for the music to flow within. From epic drops on the dime to long space jams complimented by a psycadelic light show these guys were tight through every note.

  • by dhs2192 on 7/17/16The Paramount - HuntingtonRating: 5 out of 5
