About

LETTUCE is (a) the prime ingredient in a salad, (b) a slang for cash, (c) a green herb that can be smoked, (d) a genre-busting six-member musical collective formed in 1992 by four alumni of the prestigious Berklee College Of Music, or (e) all of the above. If you answered "e," then you're in on the sheer magic of a band that both feeds the rich history of funk and combines it with strains of hip-hop, rock, psychedelia, jazz, soul, jam, go-go, and the avant-garde.

The GRAMMY Award-nominated six-piece is comprised of Adam Deitch [drums, percussion, arrangement], Adam "Shmeeans" Smirnoff [guitar], Erick "Jesus" Coomes [bass], Ryan Zoidis [alto, baritone, tenor sax, Korg X-911], Eric "Benny" Bloom [trumpet, horns], and Nigel Hall [vocals, Hammond B-3, Rhodes, clavinet, keyboards].  To date, their discography includes Outta Here [2002], Rage! [2008], Fly [2012], Crush [2015], the EP Mt. Crushmore [2016], the live album Witches Stew [2017], Elevate [2019], Resonate [2020], Unify [2022], and now VIBE - a single 48 minute continuous session of pure, free-flowing improvisation, available digitally for the first time.

With VIBE, Lettuce cement their status as boundary-pushing innovators three decades into their lauded career, blurring lines and smashing up jazz chords, psychedelic passages, big horns, strains of soul and go-go, hip-hop elements for an uplifting, improvisational sound all their own. Ryan Zoidis explains, "we got into a vibe and hit record. 48 minutes went by like a blink of an eye. This is our first purely improvised recording. Nothing planned, nothing edited or overdubbed. This is a true spontaneous musical expression captured in its entirety."

All together now... Lett us VIBE.

The ticket said 7 doors, 8pm show. No one played a note until after 10. The show was sold out so I'm not sure what they were waiting for. Do I blame the venue? or was it the bands choice? The sound was poorly mixed. BUT, the band was tight and entertaining. Great group, poor management.

  • Lettuce funk you up!

by Hoopmamahoop on 2/18/14The Rex Theater - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

The Lettuce concert I attended was seriously one of my favorite and most memorable shows! The energy that this band puts out there is unreal. They are on point all the time. True professional musicians with some serious talent and soul. You will NOT be disappointed if you attend a Lettuce show, which I highly suggest you do.

by GeeTarFan on 2/10/14Port City Music Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Truly spectacular sold out show at Port City. A few friends over the years had recommended the band but I didn't make the effort -- what a mistake. Lettuce brings the funk every song and in every way, with dancing fans and euphoric faces everywhere. As Eric Dyson says in a new documentary, Finding the Funk, "Funk is the fundamental structure of our existence when we celebrate ecstasy at our heights." Want some awe and wonder? Have some Lettuce.

First time hearing this band - they're great. Nice change away from bluegrass for a night for me

Amazing show! Can't wait to see them again! Had such a great time!

  • Band didn't come on til 10:40

    by TFine0327 on 9/7/13Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 2 out of 5

I like the band and was excited to see them. However, they had a DJ open for them that played from 9-10:40pm. No one was there to see the DJ! When they finally came on, the sound was a bit muffled because of the number of musicians and the venue. I had to leave after 2 songs because the garage my car was in was only open to 11pm. Next time, I hope they ditch the DJ and just come out at a reasonable time! Especially on a Thursday.

  • Late Lettuce

    by Jefcephus10 on 9/7/13Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

The venue was great, lettuce was awesome but they went on over an hour and a half late! I understand even a half hour, but not that late. The tardiness turned our excited spirit into weariness from standing around, not to mention in was after 10:30pm when they finally took the stage. Who do you think you are, Elvis?! I'll probably see them again because once they finally came out they tore the place down, but c'mon guys, get it together!

  • Must see for live music fans!!

If you haven't seen these guys you have to! Incredibly tight syncopated funk and nonstop energy from the first note to the last!! Great Great band!

Sorry - derivative funk is not very good. It's like listening to the back-up band for a soul singer, but she never shows up. My perspective may be a little different than the rest of the 20-something audience. I was there when funk was invented.
