David Gray on Tour

David Gray can captivate an entire sold-out stadium with just his voice and a guitar, pulling at every listener's heartstrings with each emotional hook. The singer-songwriter grew comfortable on the stage starting out in the early 1990s touring around the UK, Ireland and the US. Within a few years, Gray's audiences grew significantly, especially when he started opening for groups like Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band. But it wasn't until he went independent and released the album White Ladder in 1998 that Gray began getting the recognition he deserved. He ended up performing at the popular Glastonbury Festival in 1999, and eventually made it to the main stage in 2003. He's since toured the world extensively, selling out dates from the US to Europe to Australia, as he continues to expand his impressive catalog of songs.

David Gray in Concert

English singer-songwriter David Gray has enjoyed a strong, steady career composing some of music's most understated - and underrated - melodies. Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire, in North West England, in 1968, but moved to Wales with his family as a young boy. There, he started dabbling in music, playing in local punk bands as a teenager. He then headed back to England to attend the Liverpool College of Art (whose alumni include John Lennon), and began honing his songwriting skills. After graduation, he relocated to London to pursue a solo career and was quickly signed to Hut Records in 1992. He then released his debut single, "Birds Without Wings," followed by his 1993 debut album, A Century Ends, which captures a young Gray finding and forming his fierce, folk-inspired style. His next two albums, Flesh and Sell, Sell, Sell, brought some extra attention - especially in Ireland - but failed to reach a wider audience across the pond. He decided to go DIY for his fourth album, White Ladder, which he recorded in his London apartment and self-released in 1998. This decision proved to be more than wise: Dave Matthews then released the album on his brand-new ATO Records in 2000, and the single "Babylon" shot up the charts in both the UK and the US. The album has since been certified platinum a jaw-dropping 10 times. Over the following decade, Gray would continue to experiment, weaving in electronic touches while maintaining his signature heartfelt acoustic style. His 2005 album, Slow Motion, debuted at the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK, while his 2009 release, Draw the Line, featured notable appearances from Annie Lennox and Jolie Holland. In the next decade, Gray would slow down a bit, releasing his 10th studio album, Mutineers, in 2014, before returning in 2019 with Gold in a Brass Age, both released on his own IHT Records.

Sound was great, staff was friendly, lines were short, and bathrooms were clean (and air-conditioned). And, David Gray was awesome!

  • Best David Gray Show Ever

    by B. J. on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

The White Ladder Tour was one of the best David Gray shows ever. And having his drummer, Clune, back made it ever better.

  • Outstanding performance!

by Thornton on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

After waiting 2 years to see David Gray due to COVID-19 delays, he delivered a most memorable 2-1/2 hour show, highlighted by the back-story of "White Ladder" and how the album came to be. The first set had a great mix of old and new, and were performed with phenomenal energy. David's voice was as strong as ever. The second set was simply superb, as each song from "White Ladder" was played with passion and precision. The wonderful telling of the back story of each song was both interesting and engaging. Closing the second set with a cover of Softcell's "Tainted Love" was great and had the entire audience in a sing-a-long! The encore a heart-warming story about the debut of "Babylon" on the pop charts, an extended visit with David Bowie at Glastonbury at the time, and included 2 David Bowie covers, and the second half of "Please Forgive Me." The sound at Red Hat in section 6 was excellent, some of the best sound I've heard recently, especially the bass, which was well-integrated and not domineering to the point that you couldn't hear anything else. Every note that was played and sung was easily discernable. Kudos to the soundboard mixer: a TRUE professional! The amphitheater was very clean, including the rest rooms. Food service lines were reasonable and moved quickly. The limited selection of beers and bottled water was disappointing, especially the water. Liquid Death will make you want to die; it's horrible (tastes like soap) AND EXPENSIVE!! Live Nation should consider partnering with local craft breweries when convenient to offer more quality and better selection of beers/ales. All in all, a very memorable night. Thank you, David! Come back soon!

  • Magical show

by Jo on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Bought this ticket in 2019 & finally went to this show in 2022! Front row was amazing! David always puts on an awesome show!

  • A White Ladder sing along!

by So good! on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Very fun show, plays the whole album straight through and the entire audience sang along!

  • Worth the wait!

by Kent on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Bought these tickets in 2019 and it was well worth. David opened with songs he usually closes the show with and it was a perfect summers night, to quote a song he sang. Red Hat is just big enough to give the outdoor amp feel but small enough to have an intimate experience. Excellent concert and I think that was the feeling everyone had.

  • Wow!!

by Schatse on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Once again, David Gray delivered!! We've seen him three times and each time, he knocks it out of the park! He starts playing and goes non stop for nearly 3 hours. He projects perfectly and before you know it, you are engrossed in his music. Singing every song and relishing the moment. He is a great performer and a true showman. One of the things so endearing about him, is the way he speaks to the audience, as though he's sitting across from you in a pub. Relaxed and casual drawing you in. Love him and look forward to his next trip to Raleigh, NC and singing at The Red Hat. Thanks so much for a wonderful evening!!!

  • David Gray, Friday 8/12/22

by John K on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Fantastic show - Sir Gray is always phenomenal! Red Hat is now my favorite venue to see shows. The restrooms were clean/adequate and drink lines not too long. Employees friendly and professional. Of course, when you have front row seats, its really difficult to not have a fantastic time!

  • Great Show!

by Annie B on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

David Gray still sounds the same and put on a great show. Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC is a really nice, intimate venue right downtown. Loved everything about it.

  • Stunning Show x 2 ACL Moody Theater

    by trex466 on 8/9/22Rating: 5 out of 5

I was not prepared for how special this show would be! The audience was bonkers over DG and his presence on stage is really unexpected. His energy gives off a visceral response from the audience. It's equal parts charm and disarm. Lovely chemistry between him and Clune (his long-standing drummer) that's very sweet to witness. And he has such a genuine way of engaging and story telling. DG's voice is still rich and strong and clear. Everyone sat or stood either in rapture or celebration, respectively. We had floor seats and the lighting design was gorgeous. Ended up buying a ticket for the next night ... didn't want that magic to end. GO SEE HIM!

  • Wonderful performance

by C.E. L. on 8/9/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

I've loved David Gray for 2 decades and seeing him in concert finally was amazing. His voice is still as full and bursting with love as it ever was. He is a talented songwriter AND performer. THe White Ladder album was the soundtrack to my mid to late 20s, so spending an evening with the man who wrote those tunes had a lot to live up to. He was fabulous. I would go to see him again. Lots of stories and jokes. Seems friendly.

  • He was amazing!

by Deb on 8/9/22Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

He told stories about the songs and of the band years ago. He is always so professional and has such an amazing voice! Hadn't seen him in years and he was JUST as GREAT as always!!

  • Terrible Stage Lighting & Vocal Clarity

by Blues Fan on 8/8/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - AustinRating: 3 out of 5

Our seats were in Upper Balcony. Half of the songs during the show had stage lighting pointing out at the audience, particularly those of us in the balcony (where the majority of the seats are). These lights were very bright, and we were constantly shielding our eyes. Several people seated around us left early saying they were developing migraines from the lights in their eyes. Very inconsiderate of the lighting designer/director to focus lighting outward on the audience, vs on the performers. Vocals were very muddled & difficult to understand, not just because of David's thick British accent, but because of poor sound quality.

  • Reaching New Heights on the White Ladder

by JIM007 on 8/8/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome Performance Overall. David Gray has lost nothing in his vocals & realistic enthusiasm.

  • Amazing David Gray

by Roberto the Gaucho on 8/7/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

Great Show and David Gray and his band are still amazing. I do wish that the lighting engineers would stop blinding the audience. I get enough of that driving at night. We came to watch the show.

  • VIP Experience

by Myra_m27 on 8/7/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

Such an amazing experience. Loved the sound check, it was so intimate and fun. We loved every second of this concert. David Gray still has an incredible voice and listening/watching the band play was fantastic!

  • Excellent.

by Chubby One on 8/7/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

This was our first time at this venue. I was very comfortable, the crowd was just the right size. It’s the first time we’ve been out since COVID. We did not know anything about David Gray, what a discovery. I think I’m a fan now!

  • Memorable night!

by Kim on 8/7/22Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - AustinRating: 5 out of 5

David Gray gave us a night to remember at the Austin City Limited Moody Center. He and his band looked like they enjoyed every minute they were in stage. Besides the music, he’s a great storyteller!
