About

David Gray on Tour

David Gray can captivate an entire sold-out stadium with just his voice and a guitar, pulling at every listener's heartstrings with each emotional hook. The singer-songwriter grew comfortable on the stage starting out in the early 1990s touring around the UK, Ireland and the US. Within a few years, Gray's audiences grew significantly, especially when he started opening for groups like Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band. But it wasn't until he went independent and released the album White Ladder in 1998 that Gray began getting the recognition he deserved. He ended up performing at the popular Glastonbury Festival in 1999, and eventually made it to the main stage in 2003. He's since toured the world extensively, selling out dates from the US to Europe to Australia, as he continues to expand his impressive catalog of songs.

David Gray in Concert

English singer-songwriter David Gray has enjoyed a strong, steady career composing some of music's most understated - and underrated - melodies. Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire, in North West England, in 1968, but moved to Wales with his family as a young boy. There, he started dabbling in music, playing in local punk bands as a teenager. He then headed back to England to attend the Liverpool College of Art (whose alumni include John Lennon), and began honing his songwriting skills. After graduation, he relocated to London to pursue a solo career and was quickly signed to Hut Records in 1992. He then released his debut single, "Birds Without Wings," followed by his 1993 debut album, A Century Ends, which captures a young Gray finding and forming his fierce, folk-inspired style. His next two albums, Flesh and Sell, Sell, Sell, brought some extra attention - especially in Ireland - but failed to reach a wider audience across the pond. He decided to go DIY for his fourth album, White Ladder, which he recorded in his London apartment and self-released in 1998. This decision proved to be more than wise: Dave Matthews then released the album on his brand-new ATO Records in 2000, and the single "Babylon" shot up the charts in both the UK and the US. The album has since been certified platinum a jaw-dropping 10 times. Over the following decade, Gray would continue to experiment, weaving in electronic touches while maintaining his signature heartfelt acoustic style. His 2005 album, Slow Motion, debuted at the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK, while his 2009 release, Draw the Line, featured notable appearances from Annie Lennox and Jolie Holland. In the next decade, Gray would slow down a bit, releasing his 10th studio album, Mutineers, in 2014, before returning in 2019 with Gold in a Brass Age, both released on his own IHT Records.

by Regina on 8/21/22The Met Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I looked forward to this concert for two years. However, as I was unable to find anyone willing to go into that area of Philadelphia, I had to pass - and no one bought my 2 tickets, that I put up for sale, via Ticketmaster. Disappointed 😔.

  • Absolutely loved every second

by Gerbgirl on 8/21/22The Met Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I've been to numerous David Gray concerts and by far this was the best one yet. He never disappoints and at The Met he brought every ounce of heart and soul during that show.

  • Excellent show with great acoustics

by Bill M on 8/21/22The Met Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

David Gray was excellent and well worth the 3 year wait especially as played for just short of 3 hours. This was my first time at the Met, I was impressed with the Met seats, which were comfortable, The acoustics were awesome, and I will come back to see other artists. Only downside was the distance of the regular parking which was several blocks down the street from the theater. I get VIP parking in the future or take Uber.

  • Nice birthday gig for 'Clune

by Stretch on 8/19/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! Women behind us were too 'chatty Cathy', pissed my wife off. She moved off for awhile so i joined her. Outside of that it was very enjoyable. It was fun to sing Happy Birthday to Craig McClune.

  • His best show ever!

by Jo M on 8/17/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have seen David Gray several times and this was, by far, his best ever. We purchased our tickets for 2020 and we know what happened then! He was so energized as was his band to be able to perform for his loyal fans. I surely hope we won't have to wait this long again. Thank you sir for taking our minds away from all the insanity in this world of ours!

  • Very reserved soundcheck. Best show this year.

by Monk on 8/17/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

I have been to many soundchecks. Every time I have been to one the artist is very interactive with the fans that showed up. There will talking with the fans, joking around, etc. Not this one. I even said hello to one of the band members and received nothing but a scowl. That kind of made me feel stupid for paying the extra money for the experience. I certainly did not feel like a VIP. On the other hand I think David Gray was the 6th show I've seen in 2022 and it was by far the best performance I have seen. Maybe ever. Hopefully the next soundcheck I experience won't be so reserved.

  • The best concert I've attended in years.

by Brad on 8/17/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

A legendary artist, an amazing repertoire of songs, a really tight band, and most importantly 100% commitment to the performance. Even though it's Raleigh, NC is a small town with a small venue. David Gray rocked the house and gave 100%. This concert was postponed twice - first in august of 2020 and then in august of 2021. I'm so glad it worked out and we were able to enjoy this show. Thank you.

  • Great Concert

by Loota on 8/17/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

David Gray treated the audience to a live performance of his greatest hits. The 2.5 hour concert included a performance of the White Ladder album as well as a selection of best songs. The outdoor venue was perfect, a clear late summer evening with a gifted song writer and his band.

  • Gray Fantastic

by Tish on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 5 out of 5

Where do you begin to describe the evening when the weather is perfect and the crowd is ready for one of the best artist around? David Gray played all the right music for the night. His reminiscing of his career spoke to what everyone has experienced being in a world Covid pandemic. Couldn’t have asked for anything more.

  • Great show

  • David Gray 20th Anniversary White Ladder Tour.

by Songman on 8/16/22Red Hat Amphitheater - RaleighRating: 4 out of 5

David & Co.'s performance was very good....Quite the extensive set list, nicely delivered with an engaging on stage presence. Red Hat Amphitheater (it was our first time there) seems like a nice venue and was a good fit for this performance. Acoustics were fine, lighting was well done, amenities (concessions, restrooms, etc.) were more than adequate. True to my moniker, I paid particular attention to the pre-show and between sets music, which I must say I thoroughly enjoyed. Some real gems there (where do you go to hear Love's "Alone Again Or" and Mose Allison's "Seventh Son" anymore?)! My compliments to whoever compiled that playlist. On the other hand, our enjoyment was undercut a bit by some goings on right around us. We seemed to draw the seats behind and next to a group of attendees who were quite more into themselves, and the interests of the rest of us ticket holders be damned. It was a distraction at the very least, and is the reason why we didn't give our experience a "5." All in all, though, we would certainly return to Red Hat. Thanks for the opportunity to comment.
