About

Ondara has performed on NPR's Tiny Desk and CBS This Morning: Saturday. Tales of America received a nomination for Best Americana Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards and Ondara received a nod for Best Emerging Act at the 2019 Americana Awards. Ondara grew up in Nairobi, Kenya listening to American alt-rock. At an early age he fell in love with the music of Bob Dylan and moved to Minneapolis in 2013 to pursue a career as a singer and songwriter. He began making his way in the local music scene, continually writing songs about what he saw, felt and experienced in a place far different from home. Since then, he has toured extensively including sold out European performances, a completely sold out headlining U.S. tour, appearances at festivals nationwide including Newport Folk Festival, and opened for the likes of The Lumineers, First Aid Kit, Neil Young, The Head & The Heart, and more.

    underwhelming

by Ulster on 12/17/23Uptown Theater Minneapolis - Minneapolis

Ondara has a nice voice, and his texts are interesting. But the songs were quite similar to one another, and there was much repetition within each song. The simple rhythm guitar did not add any interest whatsoever. Ondara does not seem to be able to pick. In the end the experience was monochrome. Something else was needed. Also disappointing that Ondara shows no interest in entertaining, as he spoke only briefly and repeated mediocre jokes. I know he toured with a string trio. He really should have hired them for this concert.

    Otherworldly vocals

by KatATX on 6/13/233TEN Austin City Limits Live - Austin

Mind blowing performance. His vocals are melodic, intense, chilling, and alien like :-p Keily Connell was incredible as an opener. The performances greatly compliment each other. Dont miss this one if you get a chance to go.

    Concert was transcendant!

by Mel on 10/30/19L'Astral - Montréal

J.S. Ondara is in the right place at the right time! He is smart, soft-spoken and super-talented with a passion for what he’s doing. L’Astral was intimate and a perfect Enid for his show. The night couldn’t have been more perfect!

    A must see performer

    by TAY4U on 9/29/19XL Live - Harrisburg

JS Ondara is a once in a life time performer. Combine his lyrical wizardry with his vocal talents, and you create an experience that rips at your soul and lays it bare. Rarely does a performer take the stage armed only with a few guitars and a voice and win the crowd over to the point that they feel spent, drained, and transformed at the end of the show. A magical talent that will only get better with time.

Very nice, intimate setting with an amazing artist!

by Jon on 9/23/19XL Live - Harrisburg

Not a bad seat in the house (and out of the house, really). The outdoor area was nice, with fire tables and a fireplace and ample seating. JS Ondara was amazing! He is a great vocalist and true wordsmith. His performance is so captivating.

Very talented singer and the venue was intimate without a bad seat but still large enough not to be crowded.

    Great concert

by Chris on 6/1/19The Basement - Columbus

J.S. performed all of the songs from his first, recently released album, and also a few short covers. I bought a copy his CD and a ticket to this show a few weeks ago after hearing “Saying Goodbye” played on NPR. I had to go hear him sing live, in person, if only to see if & how someone could actually sing so amazingly well. He didn’t disappoint; he put on a great show! I’m looking at going to another performance of his in Pittsburgh toward the end of his tour. I don’t expect his set list to change much, but I’ll gladly attend to hear him sing and play again. His musicianship and stage presence really hits me hard.
