David Gray on Tour

David Gray can captivate an entire sold-out stadium with just his voice and a guitar, pulling at every listener's heartstrings with each emotional hook. The singer-songwriter grew comfortable on the stage starting out in the early 1990s touring around the UK, Ireland and the US. Within a few years, Gray's audiences grew significantly, especially when he started opening for groups like Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band. But it wasn't until he went independent and released the album White Ladder in 1998 that Gray began getting the recognition he deserved. He ended up performing at the popular Glastonbury Festival in 1999, and eventually made it to the main stage in 2003. He's since toured the world extensively, selling out dates from the US to Europe to Australia, as he continues to expand his impressive catalog of songs.

David Gray in Concert

English singer-songwriter David Gray has enjoyed a strong, steady career composing some of music's most understated - and underrated - melodies. Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire, in North West England, in 1968, but moved to Wales with his family as a young boy. There, he started dabbling in music, playing in local punk bands as a teenager. He then headed back to England to attend the Liverpool College of Art (whose alumni include John Lennon), and began honing his songwriting skills. After graduation, he relocated to London to pursue a solo career and was quickly signed to Hut Records in 1992. He then released his debut single, "Birds Without Wings," followed by his 1993 debut album, A Century Ends, which captures a young Gray finding and forming his fierce, folk-inspired style. His next two albums, Flesh and Sell, Sell, Sell, brought some extra attention - especially in Ireland - but failed to reach a wider audience across the pond. He decided to go DIY for his fourth album, White Ladder, which he recorded in his London apartment and self-released in 1998. This decision proved to be more than wise: Dave Matthews then released the album on his brand-new ATO Records in 2000, and the single "Babylon" shot up the charts in both the UK and the US. The album has since been certified platinum a jaw-dropping 10 times. Over the following decade, Gray would continue to experiment, weaving in electronic touches while maintaining his signature heartfelt acoustic style. His 2005 album, Slow Motion, debuted at the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK, while his 2009 release, Draw the Line, featured notable appearances from Annie Lennox and Jolie Holland. In the next decade, Gray would slow down a bit, releasing his 10th studio album, Mutineers, in 2014, before returning in 2019 with Gold in a Brass Age, both released on his own IHT Records.

He and his band are fantastic performers. He sounds even better in person. His eclectic sounds and lyrics are worth any price paid. They are all super talented and play several instruments. They even tell stories about the songs. I can't say enough good things about him and his band. Please come back!!!!

  • David Gray’s Unforgettable Performance

by ViQui on 1/29/25The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Attending David Gray’s concert was nothing short of spectacular. The selection of songs was carefully curated, featuring a blend of beloved classics and hidden gems that resonated deeply with the audience. David’s voice, as impeccable live as on his recordings, transported everyone to a place of pure musical bliss. The band’s performance was stellar, complementing his vocals perfectly and adding a dynamic energy to the show. What truly set this concert apart were the stories David shared about his songs. Each tale brought a sense of intimacy, making the evening feel more like a gathering of friends than a typical concert. The sound quality was top-notch, ensuring that every note and lyric was crystal clear. I had the pleasure of attending with my 18-year-old son, who enjoyed the concert just as much as I did. It was a memorable experience that we will both cherish for years to come. Thank you, David Gray, for the best concert of my life! It was not just an event; it was a heartfelt celebration of music and connection!

  • Awesome show

by ekcl on 1/29/25The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

The first thing I have to mention is the lighting. The lighting crew did a fantastic job. Each song had lighting that seemed to match the album covers. The set list was perfect and ending with a Babylon group sing along with an extra verse made me feel the exact way I wanted to feel leaving that show. Awesome show. I would go again.

  • Now and always- still the one I love

by Pcb on 1/29/25The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Pure class. Rocking start with a Depeche Mode blended tune. Speaking to the crowd. Explaining the songs. Messing up and owning it. Played some incredible older tunes for various albums. A terrific range. The chaps were brilliant on backing vocals. The opening act (sierra spirit) was wonderful. Couldn’t have enjoyed this concert more.

  • Really good

by JulieAT on 1/29/25The Anthem - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

First, I really like the Anthem - not a bad seat in the house, no dance police, just a really great place. Second- Loved the David Gray show. He’s so good and laid back. A great show coupled with the atmosphere at the Anthem is such a mood lifter. The Anthem, the 9:30, and Pearl St- great music and terrific venues- keep delivering the music.

David Gray was phenomenal! As the tour name Past and Present suggests, he performed songs Past and Present and the fan favorites. I've missed him on his prior stops in Philadelphia and I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to see him live. I was not disappointed ! I also love the Met Philly. Terrific venue.

  • The Magic of David Gray

by Wayneosworld on 1/28/25The Met Presented by Highmark - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve been a fan of David Gray dating back to high school when the White Ladder album became a huge hit in the US. for me, every consecutive album has been a deeply connecting journey through music. I think there are a few artists in your lifetime that you never get tired of and for me that is David when you go to one of the shows, the audience members are also deeply invested in the music and the story. You can see it when they stand up and dance and sing just loudly as David does. and David doesn’t seem to mind - it’s like he generates energy from the energy he receives. This show was no different.

  • Many shades of Gray

by Joker J on 1/27/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

David Gray’s concert at the MGM at Fenway in Boston was an unforgettable night, kicking off his Dear Life tour with an impressive mix of new material and classic hits. With a super tight band and his signature emotive vocals, Gray delivered a performance that showcased both musical precision and emotional depth. The new songs from Dear Life blended seamlessly with fan favorites, offering a perfect balance of fresh and familiar. The venue itself-intimate yet grand-set the stage for a truly memorable show. With top-notch acoustics and a crowd fully immersed in the experience. Gray’s performance was a reminder of why his music had such lasting power. The night wasn’t without its little imperfections, but it was these raw, unplanned moments that added authenticity and charm to the show. Whether you’ve been a longtime fan or seeing him live for the first time, it is clear that David Gray is still at the top of his game, delivering a performance that fans will remember fir years ti come. Kudos for the nod to Depeche Mode at the end of the show!

  • Obstructed View but not posted

by Tim on 1/27/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 1 out of 5

Bought 2nd row Aisle seats closest to the center for handicapped mother. Half the show was obstructed view whenever David Gray was at the piano. Not listed on the tickets or anything. Be better. It’s unacceptable. They put an accompanying keyboard literally right in front of him. Can’t believe I don’t hear others complaining.

  • Thoroughly enjoyable

by DonnaT on 1/27/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the David Gray concert at MGM Music Hall at Fenway. This was our first time attending a concert there and it seems that there is not a bad seat in the house. We were up in the third balcony and loved our vantage point because we could look down and see each of the three keyboards and watch the playing. The music was great. Even the songs I didnt know from the new album were beautiful. Love his lyrics and the mood he creates. Very positive and very beautiful!
