David Gray on Tour
David Gray can captivate an entire sold-out stadium with just his voice and a guitar, pulling at every listener's heartstrings with each emotional hook. The singer-songwriter grew comfortable on the stage starting out in the early 1990s touring around the UK, Ireland and the US. Within a few years, Gray's audiences grew significantly, especially when he started opening for groups like Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band. But it wasn't until he went independent and released the album White Ladder in 1998 that Gray began getting the recognition he deserved. He ended up performing at the popular Glastonbury Festival in 1999, and eventually made it to the main stage in 2003. He's since toured the world extensively, selling out dates from the US to Europe to Australia, as he continues to expand his impressive catalog of songs.
David Gray in Concert
English singer-songwriter David Gray has enjoyed a strong, steady career composing some of music's most understated - and underrated - melodies. Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire, in North West England, in 1968, but moved to Wales with his family as a young boy. There, he started dabbling in music, playing in local punk bands as a teenager. He then headed back to England to attend the Liverpool College of Art (whose alumni include John Lennon), and began honing his songwriting skills. After graduation, he relocated to London to pursue a solo career and was quickly signed to Hut Records in 1992. He then released his debut single, "Birds Without Wings," followed by his 1993 debut album, A Century Ends, which captures a young Gray finding and forming his fierce, folk-inspired style. His next two albums, Flesh and Sell, Sell, Sell, brought some extra attention - especially in Ireland - but failed to reach a wider audience across the pond. He decided to go DIY for his fourth album, White Ladder, which he recorded in his London apartment and self-released in 1998. This decision proved to be more than wise: Dave Matthews then released the album on his brand-new ATO Records in 2000, and the single "Babylon" shot up the charts in both the UK and the US. The album has since been certified platinum a jaw-dropping 10 times. Over the following decade, Gray would continue to experiment, weaving in electronic touches while maintaining his signature heartfelt acoustic style. His 2005 album, Slow Motion, debuted at the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK, while his 2009 release, Draw the Line, featured notable appearances from Annie Lennox and Jolie Holland. In the next decade, Gray would slow down a bit, releasing his 10th studio album, Mutineers, in 2014, before returning in 2019 with Gold in a Brass Age, both released on his own IHT Records.

Loved the venue and David Gray put on an awesome concert!
One of the best concerts I have ever been to! He plays many different instruments, with a beautiful, raw voice. His songs are about the realities of life, which make them even better! No false illusions about life. #vulnerability #beautiful #meaningful #impactful
This was my first time at the Greek theatre....it was great. Although I have liked many opening acts, it was nice just getting right down to business with David Gray. His voice was great. Like all musicians who have been around 20+ years, I always am disappointed in not getting to hear one of my favorites. For Gray, it's "destroyer". I'm still waiting to hear it live....maybe next time
David Gray's concert was pretty good and nothing technically wrong with it. Really enjoyed some of the songs, and other parts were boring - but maybe because I don't know all of his music all that well. Mostly it felt like David Gray seemed detached from the audience. At least twice he couldn't remember that he was in Berkeley and called it San Francisco. That's not even trying to connect with the audience. He also never once acknowledged the band, not only not introducing them but not even acknowledging their existence. That is so strange to me and makes him seem completely self-absorbed. His performance picked up a lot towards the end when he told a personal story about meeting David Bowie and got people up dancing with the Soft Cell Tainted Love song. Greek Theater seating is now spaced uncomfortably close together (unlike years ago when we could choose our seating) although we lucked out that it wasn't sold out and there was some space behind us.
David Gray rocked! The venue was awesome. Very friendly staff.
It was an awesome night. Playing some hits before playing the white ladder album in full then a few bangers to end the show.
David Gray was superb - one of the best live performances I’ve be seen. It was so apparent how much he loved entertaining and playing his music. The Greek is also such an amazing venue - not a bad seat in the house. Loved it all!!!
I have seen David Gray several times in concert. He is a poet and an a thoughtful performer. I particularly enjoy attending his concerts when they are out under the stars - like at the Greek Theater. The band was great, he was great, the song selection was outstanding. I particularly like his performance of "Nemesis" at the end of the first half. Don't miss him.
It was a beautiful night at the Greek. I saw DG when he first toured in a 3 piece band in 1994. He has come a long way!
David Gray was phenomenal! Saw him at the Hollywood Bowl years ago and then the Greek in Berkeley. The sound at the Greek was superb. The light show was transcendental and something I will remember for the rest of my life, as will the entire audience clapping to Please Forgive Me. Thank you, David Gray. You are a gift.
David Gray was Superb! His voice was impeccable, the band sounded great the background effects were beautiful and I loved the Greek theater! My overall experience was exhilarating! Thank you David and thank you to the Greek!
This show exceeded all the other David Gray shows I’ve been to. The songs were perfect and the performance was fun and we felt like David was having such a fun time performing. Couldn’t have asked for a better night!
An amazing performance from start to finish. White Ladder is one of the greatest albums of all time and to watch David perform it live and in it’s entirety (along with the catalog of songs to start the show) will be something I cherish for the rest of my life. I’ve waited a long long time to see David perform live and it was worth the wait and more. The David Bowie covers were icing on the cake and closing the show with Shine - arguably one of the greatest songs of all time, was just pure bliss. Thank you David Gray for a magical evening!
He sounds exactly the same as he did on the White Ladder album 20 years ago. He got the crowd singing and dancing and engaged. Played music of other British artists at the end, ending on a very lively note. A reminder why live is always worth the drive. I only wish I had a ticket stub to remember this concert.
We did the meet and greet with tickets bought three years ago. It was worth the wait! We got pictures with David, a signed poster and a White Ladder canvas bag, got to hear the sound check, and had great seats for an incredible show. David had all the energy he had when we saw him at the same venue 12 years ago. Played the whole awesome White Ladder album, his other hits plus mixed it up with covers such as Tainted Love by Soft Cell. Great show. My only complaint was that they kicked us all out after the soundcheck and we had to wait an hour in the parking lot before re-entry. We should have been allowed to stay in with a dedicated lounge area, if necessary, even if no concessions were available.
I hope to see another show here. Great venue and David Gray is an amazing singer/songwriter. Love his music.
The show started with David Gray as his own opener doing a set of greatest hits, then performed White Ladder front to back in order, and for an encore he did a fun mini set of covers. He and the band sounded great, the stage/lighting set up was really cool, and the whole crowd was engaged and had a wonderful time singing along.
The concert was phenomenal -Such a treat to see him play and then he threw in some Bowie as well!!
love the theatre for starters and David Gray is amazing. some drunk people dimmed the experience, but Gray was fabulous.
Great seats ! He was awesome!! Traffic was heavy, had to leave early
