BRANDI CARLILE IN CONCERT:

Alt-country sweetheart Brandi Carlile has crowned Billboard's Top Folk Albums chart twice since her 2005 debut, and it's easy to see why as she performs her heart-rending tunes in concert. Carlile is a world-class belter, and the perfect way her voice cracks when she goes big makes visceral tunes like "The Story" and "The Eye" all the more powerful. Country and folk are squarely in her wheelhouse, but she also dabbles in styles as diverse as rock, R&B, and blues, making for a dynamic concert experience anchored by her elegant songwriting and emotive voice. Whether she's performing songs from 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter or making jaws drop with her soaring cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Carlile never fails to impress ticket buyers with her poise, gorgeous voice, and good-natured stage presence.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brandi Carlile was born and raised in rural Washington state, where she began performing with her mother and brother at age eight. She taught herself to play guitar, and by her teens she was penning her own songs and singing backup for an Elvis impersonator. By her twenties she was performing in Seattle's music scene with her twin brothers, and in 2004 she signed with Columbia Records. Her self-titled 2005 debut topped Billboard's Folk Albums chart, introducing fans to her powerful voice and heart-on-sleeve songwriting. She teamed up with legendary producer T Bone Burnett for her 2007 sophomore album The Story, with stellar results -- the album peaked at No. 10 on the rock charts and scored a breakthrough hit with its title track. Since then Carlile has toured extensively and released four more acclaimed albums including 2011's Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony and 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter.

  • Brandi Carlile was incredible!!

by motherterese on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great from start to finish. She involved the audience often and revealed some very personal sides of herself. The sound was wonderful as is the venue.

  • Great show!

by Laurieslagen on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing Brandi in concert, and I was very impressed. It's possible that she sounds better live than on CD, which is often NOT the case with artists. I was amazed by her talent, really enjoyed her "unplugged" numbers, and would definitely pay to see her again!

  • Brandi Carlile gets Closer to You...

    by Jenny81 on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

The venue was much larger than when I'd seen them before in Detroit at Saint Andrew's Hall. It was held at the Michigan theatre in Ann Arbor, which has great sound in general. You get this feel with them, like you know them and last night was no exception. The songs ranged from the stuff on there newest album to songs from their first album. Brandi told little stories about where some songs came from inside of her, and it felt very intimate, in spite of the larger venue. She has a big voice and the music was deep at every level. I cannot wait to see her and her awesome band the next time they come for a visit.

  • Brandi Carlile is a talented artist

Brandi and her band are delightful and talented. Great concert. I particularly liked the acoustic songs.

  • Brandi is amazing!

by JMeLee on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Loved it! She truly has a gift. Her voice was amazing and her lyrics are thoughtfully written. This was my second time seeing Brandi and was not disappointed. The way she goes from acapella, to acoustic, to rockin out with the full band keeps the audience anticipating what she will do next. The chemistry and the way that she blends with "the twins" really makes the live experience unforgettable.

  • What a POWERHOUSE

    by AF27 on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I was completed amazed by her performance. Everyone should see her as she is extremely talented and MOST impressive. It was my first time seeing her and I was NOT disappointed. I cannot wait for the next opportunity. She took advantage of the Michigan Theatre venue by treating us to several "acoustic" songs where the entire band came up to the front of the stage and harmonized with no microphones or amps and the sound in the theatre was amazing. After the first song, I had chills and was so really excited knowing that it was going to be a fabulous concert. She is also funny and interacts with the audience so you get a little sense of the type of person she might be (as opposed to the big acts who only say "thank you Detroit" and never say anything else. She was honest, sincere and her talents are beyond words. To all who go, ENJOY, you are in good company.

  • Outstanding concert

by mpfh on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

If you have the chance to see Brandi in concert, go! She is an outstanding performer. Great combo of upbeat and slower songs. So soulful! Great rapport with the audience. Truly awesome performance. Really rocked the encores... did 5 or 6 songs! One of the best concerts I've seen in a while.

  • Mezmerizing - stunning

by Penly on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I do not believe there is anyone out there that can match Brandi's emotion and power behind her voice and songs. Loved hearing the twins' voices, who have wonderful voices. Very talented and so nice and kind to her audience. Gracious and generous - she played and played and played. She's my Edith Piaf.

  • Brandi was dandy

by Bodineone on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Great show - she is a little rock - country - folk - all wrapped up into one of the most beautiful voices you could ever want to hear. She played her 5-6- encores to a crowd with not a single person sitting - she rocks! Her band is great, the twins are great - would go see her again tomorrow.

  • Thank you Brandi

by sharroot on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I actually felt sort of overwhelmed several times during this concert and it wasn't because I was hearing songs I really liked in person. There was a great synergy between the band and the audience that created a very special feeling to be shared by all. My date, who had not been a big fan, said it was one of the best concerts he'd ever been to. It was as good as, or better, than early K.D. Lang, Emmylou or Willie and the band. The whole band was terrific.

  • Brandi is amazing!

by BarbSig on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I took our 12 year old son to the concert as part of his birthday celebration. We were all tired when we got there. But, starting with the very first "unplugged song" to the last, we were awakened by the incredible talent of Brandi and her band. Her candidness, humor and willing to take risks (by singing with no mics) made the show more downhome. My son stood up in the front toward the end of the show and went home with a guitar pick souvenier. I collected picks from concerts when I was younger. This was the highlight of the night for him.

  • Brandi and the Band were GREAT!

by HazyDavy on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I really, really enjoyed the show! Brandi's vocal range is incredible. The harmonizing with "the twins" was first rate. The composition of the set list was very well done, taking the audience on a wonderful emotional ride, including an up-tempo and soulful "My Song" early in the set, several songs from her new record and many tortured and amazingly sung acoustic ballads.

  • Very good

This was my first experience with her music and I will be buying her catalog

  • First Brandi Carlile show for me. Not the last.

by kgkg on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I very much enjoyed this show, especially the completely unplugged numbers, which was helped by the fact that the sound in the Michigan Theater is so good.

  • Brandi Carlile

    by spikejonze on 9/28/09The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Simply fantastic! Very gifted songwriter in a unique venue with excellent acoustics (at least from back row of the main floor) and intimate feel / connectiion btw fans and Brandi. Outstanding, did not want the show to end! Come back soon Brandi - would love to see her again at this venue but unlikely as both shows sold out - she'll have to move up to the bigger venues.

  • Brandi Carlile, awesome as usual

    by Mavy on 9/28/09The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi put on an amazing show. She really knows how to interact with the crowd. Between songs, she had some great stories to tell as well. Angel Taylor, who opened for Brandi, was very good as well.

  • Brandi puts a smile on my face.

She was awesome, great venue showed off her acoustics, I am excited to get her new album.

  • Brandi Carlile concert a "must see"!

    by Scuppers7 on 9/28/09The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Brandi's show one other time, and both were amazing. She has an incredible strength to her voice and is a great entertainer. She seems like she's having so much fun on stage and relates well to the audience. The O'Shaughnessy is a great venue too. The rows of seats are at a very steep angle, so the person's head in front of you is well below your eye-sight (and I'm a short person). We took our 10-yr old son, and he had a blast too. Show is family friendly.

Easily one of the best concerts I've ever attended! When is she coming back?????

  • A true talent!!!

by Dumont on 9/27/09O' Shaughnseys - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi is a star with talent, that is a rare gift, we loved every moment of the concert. The twins and all of her band are simply amazing. Her mother summed it up perfectly when I complemented her and her husband on Brandi's performance. She said, " She is a hard worker." I think everyone that was there would agree with that statement.
