BRANDI CARLILE IN CONCERT:

Alt-country sweetheart Brandi Carlile has crowned Billboard's Top Folk Albums chart twice since her 2005 debut, and it's easy to see why as she performs her heart-rending tunes in concert. Carlile is a world-class belter, and the perfect way her voice cracks when she goes big makes visceral tunes like "The Story" and "The Eye" all the more powerful. Country and folk are squarely in her wheelhouse, but she also dabbles in styles as diverse as rock, R&B, and blues, making for a dynamic concert experience anchored by her elegant songwriting and emotive voice. Whether she's performing songs from 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter or making jaws drop with her soaring cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Carlile never fails to impress ticket buyers with her poise, gorgeous voice, and good-natured stage presence.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brandi Carlile was born and raised in rural Washington state, where she began performing with her mother and brother at age eight. She taught herself to play guitar, and by her teens she was penning her own songs and singing backup for an Elvis impersonator. By her twenties she was performing in Seattle's music scene with her twin brothers, and in 2004 she signed with Columbia Records. Her self-titled 2005 debut topped Billboard's Folk Albums chart, introducing fans to her powerful voice and heart-on-sleeve songwriting. She teamed up with legendary producer T Bone Burnett for her 2007 sophomore album The Story, with stellar results -- the album peaked at No. 10 on the rock charts and scored a breakthrough hit with its title track. Since then Carlile has toured extensively and released four more acclaimed albums including 2011's Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony and 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter.

  • AMAZING!

    by nyrockstar77 on 9/30/09Mod Club Theatre - TorontoRating: 5 out of 5

This show was simply amazing. I've been waiting to see Brandi live for over 5 years and this show far exceeded my expectations (which were very high, I might add.) If you think she has an amazing voice on the album, wait until you get to see her live! She has an amazing stage presence & can rock out on the guitar and piano, too. I love that her band acts as a band--they really are an integral part of the show and you can tell that they are more like a family than just support for her music. I can't say enough about how great the band is as well as Brandi, herself. If you ever get the chance to see her live, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT pass it up!!! It really was the best show I've seen, and I've seen quite a few.

I love Brandi Carlile's music, but hadn't seen her perform live before. I've also seen quite a few concerts in my life, many of them very enjoyable. BUT, this one was up there with one of the best ever!!!!!!!!!!! I took my teenage daughter and she felt the same. It is hard for us to agree on most anything, but we definitely agreed on this: Brandi ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brandi Carlile, the Twins, Josh, and Allie (sp) produced SUCH an amazing show at The Michigan Theater. Song after song, it was incredible. I didn't want it to end lol. I can't wait for them to come back Ann Arbor!!

Holy canole! Talk about an incredible performance. You think Brandi is amazing on CD? She's freaking ten times better live and she proves it when she starts off singing a capella or when she belts out "The Story" as if her vocal chords are her own electric guitar. And the emotion she conveys with her lyrics/tone of voice! Wow.

Brandi and band were absolutely amazing! Great stage performance and presence. Brandi's interaction with the audience in Ann Arbor was engaging as she shared stories, both touching and humorous. The fire alarm had gone off before the show and a few blips occurred during the performance-- rather than getting ticked off, she went with it and provided some great improv! The venue was great-- Michigan Theater is an intimate setting that allowed unplugged versions of a couple of songs, yet could handle the band rockin' out. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I'm still hearing the goose bump harmonies in my head.

  • Brandi Carlile should be on EVERYONES playlist!!

    by Curlyc82 on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

One word describes Brandi Carlile's concert at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor, MI - WOW! From the instant the band stepped on stage they gave us 110%. I got the chills multiple times during the evening listening to Brandi's haunting vocals and poignant lyrics. She played a great mix of Brandi Carlile, The Story, and the much anticipanted new release, Give Up the Ghost. My husband and I danced to The Story for our first dance at the wedding and we were awestruck to see and hear this special song live. We also loved the unique change of pace on the two acoustic songs. We were sitting in the back but heard Brandi's call as clear as day. What a wonderful way to start the week!

  • Carlile

by Kooky on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

There aren't many performers who can outperform their polished studio work. The exception is the remarkable Brandi Carlile. Her vocal range is quite incredible; she can be strong and hard rocking, passionate & sultry, & yodel like an angel! She is a genuine artist who is willing to take risks, say the truth, and take her talents to the limit. Singing and songwriting aren't her only talents; she can also play a mean guitar and a gentle piano. I can't wait 'til she comes back!

  • Brandi Carlile is awesome!

  • in my top 5 shows of all time

by SushiSuze on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I expected to enjoy Brandi's voice. I expected a good show. I didn't realize what an incredibly tight band they were, irrespective of Brandi's vocals. I didn't realize that they'd meld musical professionalism with flat out, complete, total personal heart and soul. I didn't realize how fun they'd be to watch as well as hear. Captivating is a great word for that concert. The songwriting is top notch, including the songs from her new album. Hearing the Twins + Brandi competely unplugged/acoustic, voicing filling the Mich Theater space, perfect balance, meld and pitch, was spectacular. Man... both twins have got falsettos on them! Their encores including Fulsom Prison Blues & Let It Be were refreshing, surprising, superbly executed covers done Brandi style. Lots of times you get folks who play really well but are too professional and never let loose or plumb the emotional depths. On the other hand you get folks who are all emotion or are overly-personal, while being second rate musicians. This concert brings it all together: gut-wrenching feeling and perfect execution. Thank you Twins, Brandi, cellist and awesome girl-drummer, for giving me one of the best concert experiences ever... and i've had a lot!!

  • Awesome show by Brandi

by acwalton on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Great show at the Michigan Theater. I loved the atmosphere of the small theater. Her act was perfect for the venue. She went unplugged for a couple songs, couple solos, and brought the crowed to its feet a few times. She gave us a wide variety styles showing off her and the bands talent, and of course her amazing voice can't be beat. Loved it, can't wait until she's back in town.

  • An intimate evening with Brandi Carlile

    by StPaulTed on 9/29/09The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Wow! Where to start?!? Let me preface all of my comments by saying that I'm a mid- (OK late) 40's guy whose musical tastes range from KT Tunstall to Bruce Springsteen and from Green Day to Eric Clapton. This was the first time that I saw Brandi in concert, although I've been a fan for a few years now. I anticipated hearing that her voice would be much better live than it was on the recorded medium that I had only heard previously. What I wasn't prepared for was the distance of that gulf! I was absolutely hooked from the a capella (mandolins don't count) opening number of "Oh Dear" and from there things just got better. She is endearing with the voice of an angel and what I felt throughout the show that I was at a small intimate gathering of friends. Have you ever been invited to a party and after being there for a short time, you notice that there is a small group of people who are gathered around someone who is telling a story? Do you notice that those who have gathered will be alternately smiling, laughing and nodding in agreement? Then you make eye contact with the storyteller and in her smile and acknowledgement, you are invited into the circle and become part her audience. That is the essence of Brandi Carlile. An invitation and an acceptance - a pass to hear her talk about her life experiences, through conversation, lyrics and song. By the way, conversation is the precise thing that I miss and has dwindled over the years with Bruce Springsteen concerts...

  • Amazing Show

by thanos on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I've never been to a Brandi Carlile show before. I had no idea that she was such an entertainer. I really didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised at her vocals. She and the other members of her band were very good at harmonizing. The theatre's acoustics really helped give a rich sound to this incredible song wrtiter's sound. She acknowledged this fact by adding an extra song that was not on the set list just so she could hear its acoustics in the Michigan Theatre. I was not as impressed with the lighting. Most of the time it was a little dim. There were some annoying moments where the spotlights were trying to backlight the band, but instead they blinded the audience. You could tell that Brandi and her band really have a lot of fun together outside of work. There were lots of jokes between songs.

  • Brandi Carlile best sounding show I've seen.

by onikidaki on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best shows I've ever seen. The sound (p.a., accoustics) was the best I've ever heard. They played two songs with nothing miked and you could hear it all perfectly. They are awesome musically. The drummer was incredible. My daughter (9) Says: that was the best show ever ! Brandi Carlile rocks! I can't wait until she comes and plays again.

  • A little woman with a HUGE voice, amazing.

by kristigo on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

I have never seen Brandi, but my brother is a big fan so we went for his birthday here in Ann Arbor. The Michigan Theater is a great venue, even though we had seats further back we still had a great view and the sound was perfect. She played everything from a capella to acoustic to full on rock out session. The twins and her make a great team and everyone in the room felt a part of the concert. Afterwards they all stayed to sign shirts and cds and chat for at least an hour outside in the cold rainy Michigan fall weather. Also my brother is from Pittsburgh and asked about her playing there anytime soon, she knew the date and the venue she was playing at next January. That's impressive.

  • Love Brandi Carlile

    by ju333kol on 9/29/09The O'Shaughnessy - Saint PaulRating: 5 out of 5

Sounded great, love the new song Dreams almost as much as The Story, only complaint was the seating at the O'Shaunessey...they made the crowd wait to get seated and to sell merchandise too long in a small area and with no aisles was a pain when people went in and out!

  • Brandi Carlile was an INCREDIBLE act!

by Conne on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Not only is her sweet voice amazing...the harmony with her band was fantastic! Can't wait till she returns! A class act for such a young woman!

  • One of the Best...

by bugsmaddy on 9/29/09Michigan Theater - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

The show was great! Such a humble, down to earth performer. She has an amazing voice. The twins were great too! She gave us some extra songs, unplugged....which were awesome. She did a couple of Johnny Cash songs that had everyone on their feet. Well worth the money and more.
