BRANDI CARLILE IN CONCERT:

Alt-country sweetheart Brandi Carlile has crowned Billboard's Top Folk Albums chart twice since her 2005 debut, and it's easy to see why as she performs her heart-rending tunes in concert. Carlile is a world-class belter, and the perfect way her voice cracks when she goes big makes visceral tunes like "The Story" and "The Eye" all the more powerful. Country and folk are squarely in her wheelhouse, but she also dabbles in styles as diverse as rock, R&B, and blues, making for a dynamic concert experience anchored by her elegant songwriting and emotive voice. Whether she's performing songs from 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter or making jaws drop with her soaring cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Carlile never fails to impress ticket buyers with her poise, gorgeous voice, and good-natured stage presence.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brandi Carlile was born and raised in rural Washington state, where she began performing with her mother and brother at age eight. She taught herself to play guitar, and by her teens she was penning her own songs and singing backup for an Elvis impersonator. By her twenties she was performing in Seattle's music scene with her twin brothers, and in 2004 she signed with Columbia Records. Her self-titled 2005 debut topped Billboard's Folk Albums chart, introducing fans to her powerful voice and heart-on-sleeve songwriting. She teamed up with legendary producer T Bone Burnett for her 2007 sophomore album The Story, with stellar results -- the album peaked at No. 10 on the rock charts and scored a breakthrough hit with its title track. Since then Carlile has toured extensively and released four more acclaimed albums including 2011's Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony and 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter.

She was amazing! What a fun show, she interacts with the audience, and the music was wonderful. I also recommend the opening act, Katie Herzig!

She is a great entertainer. And the group that did the warm-up. ...Katie Herzig Acoustic Trio was outstanding. I see that group going a long way. Both were very engaging with the audience.

  • Brandi rocked PDX

by Zazenz on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The emotion behind each song was tangible and the crowd loved how Brandi brought them into the show by encouraging them to sing along during numerous songs. They played a combination of fan favorites and new material. Great Johnny Cash and Beatles covers in the encore.

  • She was incredible Live!

by tmedin on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi was absolutely amazing live. It's hard to beleive she could sound better than her CD, but it's true. Her accoustic set was breathtaking. I had terrible seats, but it's okay, because it was the best $20.00 dollars I have spent in a long time.

  • This girl is getting better and better

by pdxfan on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The Schnitz last night: Overwhelming fan club aside...Brandi Carlile has matured into an almost perfect blend of pop/country/blues/folk with a smile and ease that can almost match her stunning voice. My best show of 2009, possibly longer... She said she was a bit scared by the size of crowd that showed up but... She opened up the show with an acapella that could not have been easy to pull off but worked to charm and impress us all.

  • Brandi Never Disappoints!!

by sunystella on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi Carlile just keeps getting better. The band with the twins now have a great drummer that rocks. Brandi belted out song after song from all 3 of her CDs. She did covers of Johnny Cash and the Beatles

With the voice of incredible talent and the energy of a hurricane, Brandi Carlile is in my top three for live events.

  • by Anonymous on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

From the first moment she came onstage, Brandi held the entire audience in her hand. Funny, charismatic, charming, energetic and soulful, she and her band rocked the Schnitz from floor to ceiling. She was thrilled to be playing such a house and captivated every single person in the audience. Brandi was gracious and slightly shy and a joy to watch and hear.

Wonderful show. Her voice is amazing. I loved the Johnny Cash stuff during the encore. The only flaw was that whoever did the light design obviously didn't look at it from balcony seating. The strobes were absolutely blinding at many points during the set.

  • BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!!!!

by PUDDLDIVE on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

THIS WAS HANDS DOWN THE BEST PERFORMANCE EVER! SHE SINGS WITH HER HEART AS HER GUIDE, AND THE VOCALS THAT SHE RELEASES RESONATE THROUGHOUT THE AUDIENCES MIND,BODY AND SOUL. WHAT AN AMAZING GIFT SHE HAS AND EVEN MORE THAT SHE SO OPENLY SHARES IT WITH ALL OF US LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE THERE... FROM THE MINUTE SHE WALKED ON STAGE TO THE LAST OF 5 OR 6 SONGS SHE CAME OUT AND PLAYED AFTER THE ENCORE, I STOOD MESMERIZED BY THIS AMAZING TALENT.

The show was fantastic - one of the better performances I've seen in a long time. It was a combination of the unique venue and Brandi's incredible energy - she played an extremely long set that was varied in style.

  • Brandi Carlile...Wow!

by sheba18 on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Not that I'm surprised that she rocked the house but wow! Was a little surprised by the venue. I love the Schnitz but generally like to stand up and groove at concerts. It didn't matter though. Brandi has a way of making every venue seem intimate. And the band, well we all know the Twins are great musicians, singers, and eye candy. However, we got extra special auditory love from the bad ass drummer and the smooth as silk cellist she brought along.

  • by Anonymous on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Performers were outstanding. Sound volume was too loud masking the singers voices. Scenery was amateur. Lights in eyes of the audience? bad choice.

  • Can I Give 6 Stars?

by RoverJack on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Truly incredible show, Brandi connects with the audience with stories and humor and audience participation. Her encore lasted, like, over 45 minutes, she even had her opening band join them onstage...Can't wait to see her again!

  • absolutely perfect!

by annvon on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi was out of this world! Her energy is amazing, her voice strong and rich, the harmonies hauntingly rich. It could not have been a better concert! I love the cello.

  • Brandi - a Great entertainer

by bobinportland on 10/23/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Loved Brandi's songs - her new and "her old" ones. A great performance from a relatively young performer...great cross section of soothing ballads, to "get up and dance" rock! Truly engaging, making the audience feel like they were the ones she truly enjoyed performing for! Not afraid to try new things from the "unplugged" song, to solo performances, to full-on accompaniment...loved the inclusion of cellos for a bit of "the orchestral". And Katie Herzig was a very nice act...was not familiar with her before the evening, but will be following her too! A great evening all around!
