BRANDI CARLILE IN CONCERT:

Alt-country sweetheart Brandi Carlile has crowned Billboard's Top Folk Albums chart twice since her 2005 debut, and it's easy to see why as she performs her heart-rending tunes in concert. Carlile is a world-class belter, and the perfect way her voice cracks when she goes big makes visceral tunes like "The Story" and "The Eye" all the more powerful. Country and folk are squarely in her wheelhouse, but she also dabbles in styles as diverse as rock, R&B, and blues, making for a dynamic concert experience anchored by her elegant songwriting and emotive voice. Whether she's performing songs from 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter or making jaws drop with her soaring cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Carlile never fails to impress ticket buyers with her poise, gorgeous voice, and good-natured stage presence.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brandi Carlile was born and raised in rural Washington state, where she began performing with her mother and brother at age eight. She taught herself to play guitar, and by her teens she was penning her own songs and singing backup for an Elvis impersonator. By her twenties she was performing in Seattle's music scene with her twin brothers, and in 2004 she signed with Columbia Records. Her self-titled 2005 debut topped Billboard's Folk Albums chart, introducing fans to her powerful voice and heart-on-sleeve songwriting. She teamed up with legendary producer T Bone Burnett for her 2007 sophomore album The Story, with stellar results -- the album peaked at No. 10 on the rock charts and scored a breakthrough hit with its title track. Since then Carlile has toured extensively and released four more acclaimed albums including 2011's Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony and 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter.

  • Brandi Carlile was Amazing!!!

by CaptnAmerica on 10/25/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I think the single chracteristic that stands out in my mind is how humble Brandi is! She is so talented, but her humility on stage was great! I liked the bare feet too! Gave the concert a very comfortable feel. She is able to rock, and she is able to be very, very calm! I also thought is was awesome to bring the opening act back out and perform with them! It suggests to me that Brandi clearly remembers how hard it is to get started, and to share the stage like that was really something! It was a great show!

  • Enjoyable

This concert was great....Katie Herzog came on and sang first and the evening just kept getting better and better after that!

Such a good show, as always from Ms. Carlile. Although the Schnitzer Hall was beautiful, I prefer venues where people feel free to get up and dance.

  • Brandi was fabulous!

She pours her heart and soul into her performances. We love the fact that she includes the audience in some of her songs. We would definitely see her again when she comes back to Portland.

  • Brandi Carlile is fantastic!

The show at The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland was simply amazing. The acoustics in this theatre are great and this made Brandi's unique voice sound even more mesmerizing. The whole band is great, including the twin brothers and the female drummer! Brandi is very talented and her music is great! I'd describe her music as rock/folk but that's kind of subjective I guess. Each and every one of her songs sound distincly different, which I think is rare nowadays for bands, yet they all have a "Brandi Carlile" feel to them The show lasted about 3 hours (1 hour opening act + 2 hours main act) and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and definitely recommend it to everyone.

  • Brandi and warm up band with Kate were outstanding

The whole concert was delightful! The talent that was shown that evening was amazing! I loved how they involved the audience and it was one of the most enjoyable concerts I've been too. Both Brandi and Kate were great with the audience and were so personable. Thank you

  • Brandi amazes!

Got off late from work, traffic to Portland from Olympia was horrible, and I got there at almost 8:30. I figured I'd missed the beginning of the show. Things weren't going like I'd hoped...then after Katy Herzog (quite a good musician) finished, Brandi came on! Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall is a beautiful old theatre and Brandi made it shine all the more. Her voice filled the place with it's powerful clear sound . Her singing and playing had me captivated until the very end. She did a cover of "Let It Be" that brought me to tears. I will definitely make a point of seeing her when she tours next...

  • Brandi was awesome!

I have been watching Brandi since April 20th 2002 at a bar in Washington called Clifford's There was a $5.00 cover charge to get in and she was amazing then. She's only grown and made many wonderful songs that have been there with me through the years. I recommend anyone and everyone to see her live!!!

  • solid brandi

by karmi on 10/24/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

Brandi, the twins and company put forth a great show at the Schnitz. They proved they can fill a big venue both with people and with music. Good news for Portlanders who had trouble getting tickets to see them at smaller venues, bad news for Portlanders who saw them at smaller venues and loved the intimacy of the performance there. The new songs from the new album were the highlights of the show. Compared to the new songs the old ones sounded tired and lacked the same energy and vitality. Overall, Brandi voice has been stronger and sounded better, yet the overall performance made up for any minor shortfalls. Thank you Brandi, Tim, Phil, and co.

  • Brandi- Hotter than ever!

by smoorsie on 10/24/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

The Schnitzer was made for Brandi's voice. The whole audience was singing, thousand voices in great accoustics. I can only imagine what that sounds like coming back at her on the stage. Fantastic show. I've seen her about 6 times now and she never disappoints.

  • Absolutely Amazing!

by NikiNW on 10/24/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I've always been a fan but had not yet seen her in concert. My husband and I were blown away, she is better live than on her CD's!!! A truly amazing talent, if you haven't seen her, put it on your "to do" list!

  • Brandi Carlile was amazing, as usual

by maplevalley on 10/24/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi Carlile's voice is amazing, and she's a great story tell both in her music and during her performances. She always looks like she loves being up there on stage sharing her music. It was great to see her in an intimate venue where you could appreciate her talents even more.

  • So amazing I wept

by TMoneyMillionaire on 10/24/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi and the entire band (as well as the opening act) put on a show that was simply fantastic from start to finish. The room was alive, and Brandi was feeding it with her amazing voice and stellar stage presence. The energy coming from the stage was exactly why people pay to see live shows. You want to see the artist love their work, and dang does Brandi love hers. The encore of Folsum Prison Blues was so exciting, it literally gave me goosebumps. Ending the show with the sadly-sweet melody of Mad World brought a tear to my eye. The new song from the album played with no amplification made me think of how music used to be, when the singer could sing, and the band could play, and there was no doubt about how they made it work.

  • Brandi Rocks !

    by mandy03121982 on 10/24/09Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Waouh, a dream come true to see this amazing singer in NYC ! The Beacon Theater is a great stage. And Brandi really rocked that night. Just a little bit disappointed she didn't sing more of the second album songs. I love some of them that she didn't sing, but that was amazing : Great sound, great presence and she knows how to take the audience with her !

  • Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!

by TheLady26 on 10/24/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I have attended many of Brandi's concerts but the Schnitzer venue was great. Brandi Carlile is the greatest talent to emerge in the last 20 years.

  • There are not words to describe.... ~~~PERFECT.

by kirstensllvn on 10/24/09Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

There was a time in my life when saying that my favorite musician is Brandi Carlile would have been saying too much. Even while many people are just beginning to discover the musical genius of Carlile, I hesitate to say why I love the music so much. I had to coin my own description for this a couple days ago when the only friend that was able to come to the Portalnd show w/ me on 10.22.09 asked, "What's she like?" A MODERN FEMALE VERSION OF JOHNNY CASH... Well, she's better than that even... I simply haven't found the words for it. She is her own genre because she has the miraculous ability to sing the anthem of the heart. Her voice, cresendos, spirit and lyrics all boldly face the kinds of things that breaks all our hearts. She also projects the overcoming, the sound of our broken dreams coming back to life. If you've ever lived through anything remotely difficult your heart will recognize her music more than your ears....
