BRANDI CARLILE IN CONCERT:

Alt-country sweetheart Brandi Carlile has crowned Billboard's Top Folk Albums chart twice since her 2005 debut, and it's easy to see why as she performs her heart-rending tunes in concert. Carlile is a world-class belter, and the perfect way her voice cracks when she goes big makes visceral tunes like "The Story" and "The Eye" all the more powerful. Country and folk are squarely in her wheelhouse, but she also dabbles in styles as diverse as rock, R&B, and blues, making for a dynamic concert experience anchored by her elegant songwriting and emotive voice. Whether she's performing songs from 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter or making jaws drop with her soaring cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Carlile never fails to impress ticket buyers with her poise, gorgeous voice, and good-natured stage presence.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brandi Carlile was born and raised in rural Washington state, where she began performing with her mother and brother at age eight. She taught herself to play guitar, and by her teens she was penning her own songs and singing backup for an Elvis impersonator. By her twenties she was performing in Seattle's music scene with her twin brothers, and in 2004 she signed with Columbia Records. Her self-titled 2005 debut topped Billboard's Folk Albums chart, introducing fans to her powerful voice and heart-on-sleeve songwriting. She teamed up with legendary producer T Bone Burnett for her 2007 sophomore album The Story, with stellar results -- the album peaked at No. 10 on the rock charts and scored a breakthrough hit with its title track. Since then Carlile has toured extensively and released four more acclaimed albums including 2011's Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony and 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter.

My wife and I have seen Brandi both times she's been in Des Moines, and we'll see her the next time she comes around. However, we both agreed that the first show was better than the second, due to it being an all acoustic event. Our friends, who also attended the show, agreed with us. We think that Brandi has one of the most unique, beautiful, voices that we've heard in a many years. We like to hear her slower songs where you can really appreciate her talent of singing, acoustic guitar playing, and piano. Most of the show was fantastic, but toward the end it got a little to 'jamin' for our liking. Yes, I understand that this is very subjective and think Brandi is a wonderful singer/song writer. I do hope that she has another acoustic tour, as I would travel miles to see it. Brandi, you have a gift and a unique sound; don't ever change it. You will be a huge star soon and a legend, no doubt. Also, you CAN'T perform a show and not sing "Have You Ever", that is one of your prettiest songs; we missed hearing it. Good luck and best wishes! Iowa fans

  • Best concert I've ever been too!!!

by Miles13795 on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi Carlile was by far the best concert I've ever been too. I definitely have been recommending it to others. I loved the fact that she was conversational with the audience and she got the audience involved with the performance. I also appreciated the fact that she signed items and talked to others after the show. I will definitely go the next time she tours in Des Moines, Iowa.

An old friend from high school recommended Brandi to me and I purchased tickets to her show, relatively unseen. It was INCREDIBLE! If the Hoyt Sherman hosts her again, I WILL be there! Katie Herzig was also a nice surprise! (I had heard of her due to the song 'Hologram.')

  • Brandi Carlile rocked Hoyt Sherman

by jeterfan515 on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 4 out of 5

What a great performance. I am highly recommending anyone who has not seen her show to add it to your "to do" list.

  • Brandi brings it!

by mamasoup4 on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing! I had high expectations because her first show at Hoyt Sherman was so unbelievable. But, Brandi and her band did not disappoint. One of the best concerts I've been to--hands down.

  • Brandi was awesome!

by AuntGigi on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi Carlile put on an awesome show last night. She was backed by band on some songs, performed acapella on others and on one amazing song she just stood and sang - unplugged. She was comfortable on the stage and it seemed like she is truly doing what she loves. I became a much bigger Brandi Carlile fan after the concert and am looking forward to her next visit to Des Moines.

  • Another incredible show by Brandi and her band

by PRJudge on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

If you have never seen Brandi Carlile in concert, she is an absolute must-see. We saw her for the second time at the historic Hoyt Sherman auditorium in Des Moines. She's not a fly-by-night pop-tart, but an extremely gifted muscian and writer. Her songs incorporate blues, rock, folk and country. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see her twice in this fantastic small venue. With her talent, she's sure to be playing larger and less personal arenas soon. Don't miss.

  • Brandi & the twins are the Bomb!!!!

by Doreese on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi "brought it" to Hoyt Sherman for a second time in nine months, with a no holds barred performance. Not only can this girl sing, her band knows how to take advantage of a superb venue to showcase their sound and their incredible voices. You'll never regret buying a ticket to see this group of artists perfrom...NEVER.

  • Brandi Carlile delivered as promised!!

by MusicLover5 on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

Her voice is truly angelic! It was amazing that she kept the show on despite the snow storm- most artists would skip over DM due to those circumstances. She started out the show with Oh Dear from her newest album. It was performed a cappella and was so beautiful!! She played a few of her old favorites, a Johnny Cash cover and then many of her new songs. Her talent is undeniable!!

  • Get to know Brandi Carlile!

by stevens1151 on 1/21/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi Carlile has one of the best live voices I have had the pleasure to hear. She has a great stage presence, enjoys performing a very talented band. Her voice range is incredible - from Norah to Janis. Exceptional show.

  • True Talent

The show was everything you could ask for or want. Brandi and the twins never missed a beat and dazzled the crowd the entire time.

I am so glad I went. I went solo and totally don't regret it. I stayed after and got her autograph on a t-shirt i bought. Brandi has an amazing voice. I love her range of emotions in her song..she is a true artist and a super humble, kind soul (:

  • Brandi Carlilie rocked it!

    by freed2evolve on 12/27/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

Brandi Carlile put on a great show at this year's KFOG Concert for Kids. My friend and I had never seen her live but she now has two more solid fans! What a show and what a voice!!! I will definitely be looking forward to her next stop in the Bay Area.

  • Carlile is Amazing!

    by RikRok on 12/16/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

Once again, KFOG's Concert for Kids did not disappoint. Local favorite Eoin Harrington was fun and clearly very excited to be on stage. Mat Kearney gave a relaxed and often funny acoustic set. But Brandi Carlile rocked! What a voice, what a song writer, and what a great band. From ballads to barn-burning guitar meltdowns, from full electric to pure acoustic, everything she did was right. This lady's going places, and it was tons of fun to catch her at the Paramount. (The sound mix for her set was truly awesome.) The only disappointment was the size of the crowd. Those who didn't attend missed a great show!

  • What an amazing voice!

    by onstagegirl on 12/16/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

There are too few concerts where pure unadultered talent is shared with tthe audience. This was the concert with music that touched my very soul. Brandi Carlile has a pure voice. So much so that she performed two songs just for the "sound' in a "big" theater. It was beautiful. The audience was in awe. The twins in the band, Tim and Phil, have complimentary voices harmonizing perfectly. Kim on the drums keeps the sets rocking. The cello is a wonderful sound increasing the complexity of the music. Brandi Carlile has a voice the caliber of Alison Krause. Don't miss a concert if Brandi Carlile is in your town.

  • KFOG Concert for Kids 2009

    by pjoco on 12/15/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the entire show. What a great event at the Paramount. We have gone to KFOG Concert for Kids for the last decade. We consider this event the one that kicks off the Holidays. The Marines and the Toys for Tots, the UCSF Children's all a benefit for local children. Thank you KFOG and Eion, Mat, and Brandi for coming...what a great concert for a great cause!

  • Concert for Kids Rocked!

    by NapaMom on 12/14/09Paramount Theatre-Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

My husband and I were so proud to bring our two teenage daughters to this event (their first rock concert). Not only were the performances some of the best we've ever seen, but warm and generous hearts were abundant everywhere we looked. The Paramount is such a beautiful place. The site of all the donations for Toys for Tots made me tear up! Even the Marines were smiling! How could they not? What an event - we are definitely planning on coming back next year.
