BRANDI CARLILE IN CONCERT:

Alt-country sweetheart Brandi Carlile has crowned Billboard's Top Folk Albums chart twice since her 2005 debut, and it's easy to see why as she performs her heart-rending tunes in concert. Carlile is a world-class belter, and the perfect way her voice cracks when she goes big makes visceral tunes like "The Story" and "The Eye" all the more powerful. Country and folk are squarely in her wheelhouse, but she also dabbles in styles as diverse as rock, R&B, and blues, making for a dynamic concert experience anchored by her elegant songwriting and emotive voice. Whether she's performing songs from 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter or making jaws drop with her soaring cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Carlile never fails to impress ticket buyers with her poise, gorgeous voice, and good-natured stage presence.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Brandi Carlile was born and raised in rural Washington state, where she began performing with her mother and brother at age eight. She taught herself to play guitar, and by her teens she was penning her own songs and singing backup for an Elvis impersonator. By her twenties she was performing in Seattle's music scene with her twin brothers, and in 2004 she signed with Columbia Records. Her self-titled 2005 debut topped Billboard's Folk Albums chart, introducing fans to her powerful voice and heart-on-sleeve songwriting. She teamed up with legendary producer T Bone Burnett for her 2007 sophomore album The Story, with stellar results -- the album peaked at No. 10 on the rock charts and scored a breakthrough hit with its title track. Since then Carlile has toured extensively and released four more acclaimed albums including 2011's Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony and 2015's The Firewatcher's Daughter.

I felt like I caught a fresh and excited musician at this show. She is still very into music and what can happen with hundreds of people are enjoying music. She broke the crowd up into a three part harmony, she sang one song without any microphones, she told stories and loved the audience. It was awesome. Because of that, I could have taken a few more songs.

I would, without a doubt, go see another show of her's. I love her music and she seems to be a down to earth kind of gal. I had a wonderful time and would LOVE to see her come back to Des Moines!!!

  • Terrific show! Brandi is awesome!

I would definitely see Brandi perform again, she puts on a good show. The only downside was general admission. But we were lucky; we got there early and got a good table.

I wouldn't think it possible but Brandi sounds even more amazing in person! The show was amazing and two hours seemed like two minutes! From high energy covers to completely unplugged acoustics this show was the best that I have ever seen! A must see!

  • Absolutely Amazing

Brandi Carlile has the most hauntingly beautiful voice you will ever hear. It's amazing to hear her live because it's almost unbelievable she could sound so clear and crisp without the help of technology. If the venue's small enough, she'll do an unplugged song for you too! Great mix of her originals, covers and accapella. I love that she gets involved with her audience as well.

  • Brandi was amazing in person!

I liked Brandi's music before the concert, but after seeing her in concert I'm in love with it! It was an unforgettable evening

  • Brandi rocks again!

by AmesChica on 1/24/10HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second time seeing Brandi in concert a Hoyt Sherman and it was fantastic. She just keeps getting better and the acoustics there really do her justice. Brandi and her bandmates rock on electric, are awesome on acoustic and she belts out a capella songs as well. She's a MUST see.

  • The best!

by Zeene on 1/24/10The Intersection - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

I am disappointed by most artists when I hear them live - their voices aren't as impressive as their albums make them out to be. Brandi Carlile is just the opposite and it blew me away. Her voice is incredible. Her band is awesome. The energy was great. I will go to her performances as often as I can. You should too.

  • Brandi has a voice like no other

  • Brandi is headed for stardom

by Vickiebc on 1/24/10The Intersection - Grand RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

The band was phenomenal! Loved the acoustic set, the a'capella pieces, the whole experience of the tightly wound band. Loved it! Brandi has such a range... folk, country, rock, she has it all! and vocally all I can say is Wow! Now, the venue was not as I expected. Plenty of bars and bartenders. Not enough table to place drinks on (no need to sit but a place to put a drink would be nice) and the bathrooms! Well, the WOMEN'S was an abomination! The Intersection simply MUST do something about keeping it functional. A little bit of care would go a long way! No paper towel or hand dryers, flooding from stopped up toilets, the coldest water on the planet from the sinks! What a mess. INTERSECTION, do something about this. Please. Brandi! You Rocked! and so did your band. Opening Act was a wonderful surprise! Thanks for giving us all you had and then some!

What an AMAZING concert - Brandi is so down to earth and her voice is breath taking. The venue was good. I'm glad we got there early to be able to stand close to the front. I'm hoping she can do a tour of Michigan again soon. Just an awesome show!!

  • Brandi and Katie were Amazing!

by canucanoe on 1/24/10The Intersection - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

This is the 7th time I have seen Brandi in concert and it was a great show; the energy from the crowd was intense and went back and forth between the band and the audience. The only downside was the audience was so rowdy she never sat down at the piano...mostly rock and roll for this show, except for a few acoustic songs with teh band and That Year . I've been going to concerts since....1978 and Brandi's performance cannot be topped. Her voice is incredible. A born performer. No one wanted the show to end, including the band. If you EVER get a chance to see Brandi and the twins live, do not miss it. People are driving a long long way to see her shows and they are now selling out all over the world. Love the Johnny Cash covers. Brandi you are amazing! Katie Herzig's music and performance was also great and I will be buying her cd's. Kind of reminiscent of Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy. She is also a gifted performer and song-writer and her band members are versatile and endearing. Wish You Well sung with both bands was fantastic.

  • One of the 2 best live concerts ever!

by toddb on 1/24/10The Intersection - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi and Katie Herzig were very very good live. Hopefully they will come back to Grand Rapids and if any of these 2 are ever in your hometown it is a must see.

  • Brandi Carlile is phenomenal!

by MusicLoverLou on 1/24/10The Intersection - Grand RapidsRating: 5 out of 5

Brandi Carlile is such and incredible artist as well as being a great hostess for an evening. It is the second time I have seen this show, and I would go back again - she's just that good! Haven't seen Katie Herzig before, but I bought her CD at the show (AND was able to walk up to her and have her sign it after the show). Another VERY high quality, fantastic musician! See this show!

An incredible show -- including the venue, Katie Herzig, and the amazing Brandi Carlile. The musicians were awesome and the sound was great. Hope to see again next year but really wish it was a Saturday night---had to drive 3 hours in an ice storm so had to take 2 days of vacation.
