  • GREAT Concert!

by doctj on 2/1/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

What can I say? This is the first concert I've ever been to where the opening act was every bit as good as the main event! Standing ovations were the norm rather than the exception for both artists. I hope they both come back to Montgomery soon!

  • No Words Sufficient for Tommy Emannuel

by SoalBoy on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

My language skills fail me now. I can't describe how amazing Tommy Emannuel is. It was a personal honor and privilege to witness his talent live and in person. I have been a big fan ever since I discovered him a few months ago. A musical treasure. Thanks Tommy. The maestro opened for the headliner, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. Not a good move on Ricky Skaggs' part. As good as Rickie Skaggs is; his fame, popularity, and awards notwithstanding; his was an anticlimactic performance. Tommy Emmanuel owned the night.

by Spike1383 on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first bluegrass concert and I have to say that Ricky Skaggs was amazing! He brought the house down, it was awesome. He has a great sense of humor and had us all laughing several times during the concert. I will definitely go see him again!!

  • Needed More Tommy Emmanuel

by TommyNut on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 4 out of 5

I thought the Montgomery Performing Arts Center was an outstanding place to host an event like this. I would go back there for many more concerts. I enjoyed the concert, however, I would have enjoyed it even more if Tommy Emmanuel had played more songs. I think it would have been better if Tommy would have come back at the end to cap it off right!..Other than needing more Tommy it was Great!

  • Emmanuel/Scaggs; Wow

by Wdmster on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel began the night with a fabulous set. As always, he was clean, fast and tasteful. His stage-manner is so winning that many folks who'd come to see Scaggs were completely won over. Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder have to be one of the tightest, hottest bluegrass outfits out there. Everyone is a virtuoso. Especially nice was a guest turn by Bobby Hicks (fmr. of Bill Monroe's band and long time sideman for Ricky) who played on about a third of the show. Though old, Hicks can still bring it with the best of them. A real highlight was when Scaggs and Emmanuel and co. did Hank Wms. "I saw the Light" in Hank's hometown. Emmanuel pushed K.T. on Sugarfoot rag to dangerous speeds.

Tommy Emmanuel was outstanding, would go and see him any time. Some needs to teach "picky" Ricky to shut up and play. Didn't come to hear him run his mouth. Great job when they did.

I, along with many members of the audience, went to the concert after viewing Tommy Emmanuel's amazing guitar perform and APT's fundraising special on TV. Tommy opened with a too-short 45 minutes set. Skaggs and band came on after the break and played a well-rounded longer set of mostly traditional bluegrass. The picking and singing were first-rate and Skaggs' between-song patter was relaxed and humerous. Although I would have not made the 100 miles to the concert if it had been Ricky Skaggs only, the draw of a guitar virtuoso (quite probably one of the top five guitarist in the world) and a chance to hear such a top-notch bluegrass band on the same venue was an attractive draw for me. Also at $45.00, the tickets were affordable. Skaggs thanked everyone for buying a ticket and coming when everyone's money is tight. I found his attitude was gracious. That means a lot to the audience in these tough economic times. Also, the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre is an excellent auditorium for musical events. Sound system is excellent.

  • Great Match

by i8bugs on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

Tommy Emmanuel and Kentucky Thunder was a great match up. Need more Bluegrass attractions in Montgomery.

  • AMAZING!!!!

by harbs on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the concert. Tommy Emmanuel was amazing. I smiled and sat on the edge of my seat. My husband couldn't take his eyes off the stage while a "fellow guitarist" was playing.

  • Some of best music you can hear......

by kinwetumpka on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

Undoubtably some of the best picking and playing in the world. Ricky is such an entertainer too. You felt like it was being done for fun. You can tell how much they enjoy the music. They are all great. This is real entertainment at it's best...Talent and Class..... Plus Ricky thanked us for paying to see them. He stressed that with times like they are, people support them by coming out and buying tickets.

  • two for one special!!

by dnbrewer on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

WOW!!! Tommy Emmanuel set the stage for Ricky Skaggs!!! Australia should be very proud of that guy! Talented to boot!!!Then Ricky comes out and plays w/ his band - Kentucky Thunder! Talk about a "talent showcase"! One of the best concerts that we have ever been to. I think that Ricky could play in his sleep. What a caring and accomplished entertainer! BRAVO and ENCORE!!!

  • Ricky Skagg & Kentucky Thunder 2010-01-30

by AsburyDuke on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 4 out of 5

A solid performance from a top-shelf bluegrass band. It was not the "blow-your-doors-off" bluegrass that I remember when I saw RS&KT back in the late 90's, with the primary difference being no Bryan Sutton in the band now. That's not to take away from Cody, he is a great player, but in the opinion of this seasoned listener, there is no other guitarist in bluegrass as dominant on stage as Bryan (yes, I've seen Tony Rice and a hundred others). Anyway back to the show, Bobby Hicks made a special appearance, which was fabulous, the guys obviously enjoyed having him on stage with them. They played a great setlist, all the way back to the "Waitin' for the Sun to Shine" album up to the new one, "Songs My Dad Loved." Everything was exceptionally well executed. Ricky talked a bit too much for my taste -- mostly about himself -- but that's Ricky. Would I go again? YOU BET!

  • Skaggs & Emmanuel....Unbelievable!

by KLee919 on 1/31/10Montgomery Performing Arts Centre - MontgomeryRating: 5 out of 5

Fabulous! Couldn't believe the amount of great talent on that stage last night. I've never been a true bluegrass fan, but I am now. Loved it. Would recommend him to anyone.

  • Skaggs & Thunder were awesome!

We had a really great time, the music was awesome and the stories were great to hear. The show was packed! Great crowd, lots of energy from the show. We will definitely watch for them to appearing again and we'll be there!

  • Wonderful!

by KathyinVirginia on 1/11/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

It was wonderful to see Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. It was a very intimate, light hearted event. They all had a great sense of humor, and stayed around to meet the fans and sign autographs. The Birchmere was a top notch venue as well. Great service and atmosphere!

  • Skaggs rocks bluegrass

by MarshallTSL on 1/10/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

As tight a bluegrass band as has ever been. Even after being off the road for the last three weeks (this was their first show back from the holidays), Ricky and his hand-picked instrumental and vocal superstuds totally blew me away. They made every song sound so fresh and new, even the Monroe standards from the 40s and 50s. Besides Ricky's incredible chops, he has three stand-outs with him on stage. His banjo player was 6-time banjo player of the year. His Martin D-28-wielding 6-string madman next to him plays with unbelievable chops and with jaw-dropping finesse. And his fiddle player just makes you want to dance, sing or cry. Ricky was played his new Paul Reed Smith Tonare (with all-Brazilian Rosewood back, sides and neck) on a few tunes. It sounded like it needed some breaking in; a little raw and overly brittle still. However, Paul Reed Smith himself was in the audience and it was fun being in the audience with guitar royalty. Everyone in the band stayed behind after the show and met the audience, signed autographs and were just generally pleased to have us be there. If you are a fan of incredible musicianship, fun story-telling and hot bluegrass, this show is for you. If it comes to your town, even if bluegrass ain't your thang, you must see it. It's uplifting, happy, and it just plain rocked.

  • Not their best concert but ended well.

by SueJamie on 1/10/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

This year the concert started out very slow. My husband actually dozed off a few times. Then about half way through the concert the pace picked up and was the performance we have come to expect. They are all great musicians and Ricky Skaggs is an entertaining speaker. I would recommend this event to a friend. One added thing. The band brought a charity group with them and asked you to sponsor a child. Seemed inappropriate. It is hard to think about such a commitment while a concert is going on and impossible to discuss it with your spouse. Maybe a single donation would have been more attainable for the situation.

  • Ricky Scaggs and Kentucky Thunder best ever!

by BluegrassFanNow on 1/10/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Unbelievable talent and musicianship displayed by all members of the band, - and what can you say about Ricky? Truly one of the best concerts I've ever attended. The intimate setting of the Birchmere made it even more special. I'm already planning on going this time next year!

  • Ricky Skaggs, Birchmere

by MapleBrookBoy on 1/10/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

Outstanding show. Unbelievable musicianship. I mean amazing. I was a litle disappointed by the sound (vocals not mixed as well as they could be and just the acoustics of the Birchmere), but overall an outstanding show. If you are a true fan of Bluegrass, you absolutely must see Ricky and the Boys before you die.
