  • Entertaining but last year was better

    by Lala1018 on 10/17/10Studio Theatre - RichmondRating: 4 out of 5

Clowns and Others was a nice ensemble piece with a sense of humor. Ershter Vals was interesting, beautiful costumes. A lot of athletic partnering and Maggie Small was gorgeous in her lines and extensions. Good but I wasn't awed, didn't get the feeling of becoming part of the dance.

  • Richmond Ballet Superb!

Thought the dancers, the music, and the staging of the Richmond Ballet's New Works II was worth the time and money! Very enthusiastic about the quality of work seen!

I saw the Encore New York performance last night and it was amazing. I am recommending it to all of my friends in NYC to see it while its being performed there.

My wife and I so enjoyed Friday's performance we came back Saturday night to see the other portion of the show. Make sure you get a drink at interemission. Keith has found a nice Virginia red that is available in the lobby.

The Richmond Ballet contiues to amaze me with their level of dancing and staging. Principals on down thru trainees dance at a high level of professionalism. The orchestra also performs at a high level. I don't see a whole lot of difference between the Richmond Ballet performances and those of the ABT! The Carpenter Center is also a feast for the eyes.

The star, Juliet, was incredible. She was like a imaginary figurine - so flexible and beautiful.

  • What a Love Story

by Info2Go on 2/15/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I continue to be so impressed not only with the expertise of the dancers, but also with the dramatic flair exhibited throughout the performance. This classic story was beautifully told and made the best Valentine's Day treat! Thank you!

  • I fell in love with Richmond Ballet!

by Kayakgirl on 2/15/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Richmond Ballet's production of Romeo and Juliet was absolutely unforgettable. How extraordinary and beautiful! I had not been to any ballet in many years, and also I had not been to the Carpenter Theater since it had been re-modeled. The Richmond symphony was playing Mozart's to the ballet's rendition of Shakespear's "Romeo and Juliet". To be honest, I was anticipating a relaxed evening of watching some ballet. Instead what I got was breathtaking costumes in the beauty of the renovated Carpenter Theater, "Romeo and Juliet" being played out so dramatically by the dancers on stage, and the exquisite excellence of both the Richmond Ballet dancers' performances as well as the Richmond Symphony's orchestra basically taking my breath away the entire evening. The ballet, the symphony, the story; it was an evening to remember FOR EVER. Thank you Richmond Ballet and Richmond Symphony for such an awesome production!!!!!

  • Romeo and Juliet ballet is a dream you peek into!

by Anonymous on 2/15/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

Passions soar from start to finish in this ballet that keeps your heart racing and wishing that somehow the centuries old story, will somehow let these star crossed lovers actually be together in the end. The ballet is so elegantly done that one feels they are watching a dream that is full of so many lovely silks flowing and sets that are so real that the essence of being transported in time and sitting on a Victorian stoop watching it all is successfully accomplished. My children were mesmerized from the start. All of the cast was divine. Juliet's nursemaid and her parents are so passionate-one is brought to tears as they grieve the loss of their beloved Juliet. Juliet dances like an angel with child like glee as she falls in love with Romeo. The sword fighting was very appealing to my teenager who now thinks he shall consider ballet training, especially should he get accepted into the Appomattox Governors School where such an opportunity would exist. What a gift the Richmond ballet has given my family. Thank you very much for providing such an amazing opportunity for the community.

It's an amazing show that I want to see again if possible.

I don't know much about ballet, so I can't comment on the quality of the dancing, although I thought it was very good. I was bothered by the incomplete brass section, which cut off much of the power of some of the bigger moments. Next time, please spring for more of the whole section (it is written for 3 trumpets and 4 trombones). Again, the music sounded great, but it would have been more impressive (and as the composer intended) with a full section. I bought 2 $30 tickets and ended up being squashed in the middle of the very top row. If that was my situation, I've got to wonder what were those 'sold out' $15 tickets? I felt that I paid too much for that.

  • Romeo & Juliet entrancing

by SiggyJ on 2/15/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

My daughter, mother and I attended the Sat matinee show. It was simply beautiful. Everyone did their parts so well you were transported to Verona. You don;t need all the special effects of a movie to take you to a place if the character and emotion are portrayed convincingly, which they certainly were here. The whole show was done very well. Bravo!

  • Romeo & Juliet--beautifully done

by yllas on 2/15/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

While I wouldn't take anyone younger than 12 to this lengthy ballet, I would strongly recommend it based on the wonderfully expressive dancing, the beautiful costumes, and the unbelievable talent of the lead dancers.

  • Stellar performance at college student prices

by LesAnon on 2/15/10Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage - RichmondRating: 5 out of 5

I attended this event as a Valentine's Day to-do with my par amour, and it was simply smashing. The lead female (Juliet) made the lifts look effortless, graceful and surreal. The costumes were fabulous. I would happily see this again.

My 5 year old granddaughter was awed by the show - felt the emotions that the perfomers displayed and can't wait to make her debut someday on the stage. It was a great performance that I could have watched over and over and over - Thanks for the great day!!!
