A truly therapeutic experience
by Neill on 12/5/25Rating: 5 out of 5I was once a ballet skeptic. So much movement, so few words, so much symbolism, so little plot... I felt nervous and self-conscious walking into that theater the first few times. What if I watch the whole show and don't get it? What if someone quizzes me on the way out, and I'm exposed, and everyone realizes I'm a fraud? Listen, friend. I'm here to tell you that my anxieties couldn't be farther from the truth. Take the nutcracker, for instance. Professional studies show that ballet--watching other people perform really difficult fru-fru dance maneuvers in fancy dress, plus seeing giant rats fight on stage, plus hearing that timeless music box orchestral score is proven to relieve stress--why? Because you are not responsible for this project. All you have to do is show up, nod politely to your seat mates, and applaud at the appropriate times. If they miss a step? Not your problem. If the costume has a wardrobe malfunction? Not your problem. If the cello is a little off? NOT YOUR PROBLEM. And when everything goes perfectly, which it will, you are a GENIUS for taking your friends and family to see something fun, supporting your local arts community, and saving money. (See how smart you are? You are class personified.) As a senior engineer at a fast-paced company, I know firsthand how the stress of decision-making wears us down over the years. Once I realized that ballet is a project I don't have to manage? Just enjoy? Once I learned no one is looking to me for critiques or explanations? My mental health skyrocketed. I am a better teammate, family member, and friend. Buy your tickets and then practice insightful comments like "The musicality in this section is really beautiful.” and “I love how effortlessly they transition between movements.” or “Their partnering is very smooth. Such great trust and connection.” You can do this.
