About

Talk about magic!

British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.

Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.

One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).

Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.

  • Goofy at times

by DrJ on 12/30/23Imagine Showroom at Horseshoe Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 3 out of 5

We could have given it a better review if it wasn't for the inability to understand the actors because of their British accents. A good actor can speak in a way to imitate other dialects and at least limit the heavy accent. The concept for the play was a good one but it missed its mark at times by being a little too goofy, even for a parody. Between that and the accents I do not believe it was worth seeing.

  • OMG -- a delight

by rikalr on 12/29/23Imagine Showroom at Horseshoe Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

Really didn't know what to expect, going in with an open mind and understanding it was a parody helped. I sat in the front row but every seat really would have been just as good. I was laughing much more than I expected...until I was hit by the quaffle during quidditch but it only phased me for a moment since our team won! I would definitely recommend for anyone, even those who barely know the books (or movies)

  • Absolute Hilarity!

by Corneyman on 12/29/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Two people doing all Harry Potter books seems insane. And it is absolutely comically insane. I laughed for 75 straight. If I lived closer I would see it again...and again. In addition The Palace of fine Arts is still a beautiful theatre

  • Made for kids

by PJ on 12/28/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

The target audience is kids with a few adult jokes sprinkled here and there. Not super fun but my friend's kids' enjoyed a lot.

  • Fun yet overpriced

by TP15 on 12/28/23Imagine Showroom at Horseshoe Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 3 out of 5

We enjoyed this show and the comedy was fun but we didn’t feel it was worth the price we paid. If you are going to go, get the lowest priced ticket because the theater is really small and doesn’t require close seats.

  • Fine but not much more

by Steve A on 12/27/23Bluma Appel Theatre - TorontoRating: 2 out of 5

At the price point per ticket, I was looking for more entertainment for my family of four. We are all Harry Potter fans but felt that relatively little knowledge of the series was required for this show. I would cautiously consider attending this event. Very low prop budget and the performance was likely geared for 6-8 year-olds.

  • Fun show

by Beezette on 12/27/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Potted Potter was inventive and fun. The writing and fast-paced performances made it delightful. The moments of audience participation were also done well. Special note to the references to other books, shows, and cultural moments. Our group of 13 year-olds, 40's. 50's, and 70's all had a fine time. The only criticism was the ticketmaster process of "mobile only"when the app did not work. The help desk was awful and shunted us off to a non-existent mobile problem resolution window at the venue. We worked with the app for a day and finally got it to work for mobile tickets.

  • Christmas Eve fun to do

It was fun to do on Christmas Eve but I didn’t really find it very funny. Need some more work.

  • Fantastic show and venue!

by Jason on 12/26/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

We had a great time at the potted Potter show and really enjoyed the palace of fine arts in San Francisco. We were coming from out of town and had never been to the palace before. We were running behind snd were worried that we wouldn’t be able to find parking quickly. Not only do they have adequate parking, but the grounds are magnificent! We were blown away by the garden area. The lobby and theater are impressive and accommodating. The seats were very comfortable. The show itself was better than expected. We had no idea what the show was going into it, but the actors were hilarious and their “two man” show was well done. Their mastery of the script was evident and they played off it each other so well. I put two man in quotes because I know there are many people working behind the scenes who made this show run seamlessly. They did a fantastic job, because the show was incredible. We are signing up for the palace newsletter to see more shows there and highly recommend potted Potter to anyone who loves the books and movies. So good!

  • Very fun

The show was great. It ran smoothly, was entertaining and great for all ages. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Harry Potter.

  • Cute but for little kids

by Nik on 12/25/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

I went as an adult, thinking it was a sped up parody that goes through all 7 books as fast as they can. It’s not really like that, it’s more of a kids show. Cute but for a very young crowd. Would recommend for families with kids under 12.

  • Laughed til I cried

by TL on 12/25/23Palace of Fine Arts - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Took the family to watch this since we’re big HP fans. It was such a well-scripted show. There were parts where we couldn’t tell if it was scripted or improv. They were that good! We were entertained the entire 70 min. I was laughing the entire time and sometimes to the point of crying. This definitely a must-see!

  • Hilarious

This was hilarious! Well worth the time and money. Seating doesn’t really matter, it’s really small.

  • For All Potter fans!

by Jeff on 12/20/23Rating: 5 out of 5

I’m a HUGE Harry Potter nerd, and I was thoroughly entertained! Absolutely Hilarious! Even the inner Harry Potter nerd will appreciate it! Paul and Liam were full of energy and had a great rapport. HIGHLY recommend attending Potted Potter!

  • Pretty funny

by Meggie on 12/19/23Imagine Showroom at Horseshoe Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 4 out of 5

This was pretty funny. Not quite all Harry Potter accurate but a great parody!

  • Family-Friendly

by Ashley on 12/14/23Imagine Showroom at Horseshoe Las Vegas - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

We brought our 8-year old twins who are huge HP fans, they had a blast! It was a family-friendly show with a little bit of subtle adult comedy sprinkled in that I’m sure the kids didn’t pick up on :-). Fun show, small and intiment venue!
