Talk about magic!
British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.
Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.
One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).
Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.
Cute show. definitely fun for ages 10 and below. High energy and interactive
It was so worth it and I’m so glad I went. It was very funny and interactive.
“Potted Potter” stands out as a truly fantastic live show, a gem for both ardent Harry Potter fans and newcomers alike. This remarkable two-man show, masterfully crafted by Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, is an ingenious blend of humor, wit, and a deep affection for the Harry Potter universe. What makes “Potted Potter” so special is its ability to condense the richly detailed world of Harry Potter into a 70-minute rollercoaster of laughs and surprises. The show’s format is deceptively simple but incredibly effective. It relies heavily on the talents of its two magnificent actors, whose chemistry and comedic timing are nothing short of brilliant. They seamlessly juggle multiple characters, bringing a unique flair to each, and their improvisational skills ensure that no two shows are exactly the same. The humor in “Potted Potter” is universal – it’s a laugh-out-loud experience from start to finish. The show’s creators have done a commendable job of making it accessible and hilarious even for those who might not know their Gryffindor from their Slytherin. It’s a testament to their skill that they can take a beloved series and make it fresh, funny, and engaging for all audiences. Another standout feature of “Potted Potter” is its audience engagement. The show doesn’t just perform in front of you; it involves you, making each audience member feel like a part of the magic. This interactivity is one of the many reasons the show leaves such a lasting impression. In conclusion, “Potted Potter” is an absolute must-see. Whether you’re a Potterhead or just looking for a night of great entertainment, this show is guaranteed to deliver. It’s a delightful celebration of the Harry Potter series, a tribute that manages to be both lovingly reverential and uproariously irreverent at the same time. Don’t miss the chance to experience this magical spectacle.
This two (plus over a hundred) man show was funny and witty. It was well paced and entertaining. My wife and I left the theater with sore cheeks from smiling and laughing nonstop.
Our kids are 8, 10, and 12, and found this hilarious. The performers do their best to make it entertaining for the adults as well— to moderate success. I think the tickets are overpriced and I would definitely not pay that much to see it again. I do think it would be a fun experience for kids who are in the 10-13 age group, maybe to go by themselves and enjoy!
This show had my daughter laughing, clapping, participating the entire time! So fun, and a great intro to Improv Theatre for kids. If you love Harry Potter as much as we do, this is a great show!!
I expected it to be more in depth, clever, detailed or something. It was just two talented sketch comedy guys goofing their way through the Potter books. I think I could have written it. My kids laughed and enjoyed it but if this group did another show next year, like Star Wars or something, I'd pass
Talented actors and great show. Would have preferred more characters and a longer script. Overall a decent experience.
Theatre was right size, every seat great! The actors were very funny and had to laught at themselves sometimes. Witty - just don't expect any real Potter as it's a parody improv and very fun
I had no idea what to expect other than a comedy show about Harry Potter’s seven books - and the show was way more than that - it was engaging , funny and the actors fantastic! I would recommend this show to friends and family
Don’t know how they keep it up! Get ready for sore face from laughing! Great show.
It’s a 2 man show, appropriate for all ages but really geared more for kids. It was funny and enjoyable. I just wish it wasn’t located so far in SF. It takes a long time to drive there and that particular day the area had a street blocked and one of the parking areas blocked.
For the price I expected a bit more. It was very basic. The actresses were good and performed well but most everything else was lacking.
It was fun! Fun night out! Guys work hard Enjoyed the evening.
The actors were so much fun to watch. Fast paced show that kept us entertained. Would go again
Took a 11 and 8 yr old, one that read potter and one that didn't. both enjoyed it, and it was a quick 70-80 min of family entertainment! quick in that it was so fun that you didnt' notice the time
My whole family (includes a 12, 10 and 7 year old) loved the show and laughed the whole way through. The women were absolutely genius comedians, actors, singers…so much talent and highly entertaining!!
This was a show that was meant to be funny, but full of very obvious puns and not very clever dialogue. I've seen The Complete Works of Shakespeare and thought this would be along the same lines. It was not. The whole show was best described as silly. It was suitable for kids intellect, but priced for adults. It is definitely NOT a must do for Potter fans.
It was a fantastic show! I took my daughter who loves Harry Potter. We had so much fun and laughed a lot. I would definitely recommend others to go! It was great.
My nine year old loved it, he kept yelling spells at the cast members. He said that he enjoyed the Quittage match the most. As the show finished my son was hoping to find some Merch from his viewing of Potted Potter. We have now started to read the books!
