About

Talk about magic!

British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.

Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.

One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).

Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.

  • Very Pleased

I didn’t know what to expect, but I very much enjoyed the show. I never laughed so much and the 75 minutes goes by fast. We took our 11 and 9 year old boys and they had a blast. There is a lot of interaction with the audience. My son was even called up on stage to participate. Would recommend to anyone to go and see Potted Potter!!!!

  • A play worth watching!

On vacation in San Antonio for 2 nights, we knew as big Harry Potter fans that we could not miss the opportunity to see this play. It was a very relaxed atmosphere and the two actors were perfect and hilarious. We both said we would watch it again.

  • Silly good fun for the whole family

I've a 9 & 12 year old who went. The oldest has read all the books while the youngest is still making her way through but it didn't matter if they had read the books. The actors are lively, animated and engaging. They were quite willing to ad lib and laugh at themselves plus it was nice to see they were enjoying themselves too. It was very silly and the kids were both laughing at all the goofiness. Neither too scary nor inappropriate for my kid's ages. We adults had to giggle too.

  • Potted Potter was like watching a High School Play

by SherbertLemon on 11/19/16Boyce Theatre - CalgaryRating: 2 out of 5

I Thought this play was clever and fun, however the props were cheap! It really was like going to my child's high school play where you like it because your child was the star. You liked Potted Potter because you love Harry Potter not because it was done well. It was definitely not worth what I payed for the tickets, but I would go again if it was free.

  • It was okay

Not as funny as I expected. There were parts where I was bored and parts where I was interested. Glad I didn't pay more for the closer seats.

These two guys were totally amazing. Laughed so hard and never stopped laughing.

  • Let's play Quidditch AGAIN!

by betterreadthandead on 10/20/15Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center - ChesterRating: 5 out of 5

I have seen 13 shows this year, most on Broadway and this was hands-down the best! Who would think that two guys with minimal scenery could bring a full house to tears of laughter? I have never laughed so hard in my life. It was also nice that the one performer came out and shook hands with the audience beforehand. My husband and I felt very welcome. Also who needs Darren Criss?

I was very disappointed. It was difficult to understand what the actors were saying at times, and the play seemed very amateurish. Definitely regret spending the money on tickets.

I found this show at the last minute. It was brilliant and hilarious!

  • Truly funny!

    by Elizabeth2 on 5/6/15City Theatre - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

This was the best show I've seen in years! I had two 8 year old boys with me, as well. We had all read all of the books, and were huge Harry Potter fans. I laughed so hard that I was actually crying, and I had to shush my son occasionally because he just couldn't stop giggling. The show is a perfect combination of clever and silly, and there are certainly great portions of it that you can enjoy even without knowing a lot about Harry Potter (although it is much more enjoyable if you do, of course!). There was only a spot or two where I cringed knowing I had 2 young boys with me, but I think those things went over their heads anyway - 1 actor sat reading and reacting to 50 Shades of Grey, but it was not out loud, so if they don't know of the book (hopefully!) it will be meaningless to kids anyway.

  • I liked it, kids loved it

by Hagriduh on 5/6/15City Theatre - DetroitRating: 4 out of 5

The actors were talented and my kids found it hilarious. I have a hard time with scripted comedy and never seem to find it as funny as other people do. However, very entertaining, I recommend it to any true Potter fans, especially kids.
