Talk about magic!
British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.
Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.
One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).
Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.
Enjoyable show well worth the time. Humor is appropriate for all ages, but Teens and Millennials will enjoy it the most.
A visit with my granddaughter was a perfect outing! Great interaction with the audience!
The cast was funny and enjoyable, but the show was lacking a bit. First of all, the set was as cheap as possible. At $100 per ticket, you'd expect at least a decent prop or backdrop at some point during the performance. A $10 snake on a string was funny, but a high school drama club could have produced the same props and tickets would have been significantly less. Second, I expected more of a Harry Potter parody, as advertised, but it turned out to be more of a summary. At points, the story seemed to be an afterthought rather than the focus.
A great show and quite interactive. The slapstick hilarity would certainty appeal to the younger audiences and the quick witted allusions to the adults.
I have season tickets to The Playhouse Broadway Series. For the same price you can go there and see professional actors with real a real set. The two guys were funny. I would have enjoyed it if I paid half the money. So not worth it.
Not just for ‘kids’ - my 15 & 17 year old sons loved it and my husband who hasn’t seen/read a book still enjoyed. The actors were amazing
It was a fabulous show- we laughed the entire time!!! I would see this over and over and over!
The show was extremely well done and Jeff and Joe played off each other flawlessly and their constant banter cracked me up... of course my favorite portion was Quidditch! ... good show for a Harry Potter lover otherwise it may be a bit lost to other muggles
After buying the tickets, I read some bad reviews and was afraid I had made a mistake. I had not. I laughed for 70 minutes. My husband (not a Potter fan) laughed for 70 minutes. It was wonderful, family friendly fun.
The whole experience was fun because you felt like the audience and the actors were all in it together. Enjoyable evening with family. Clever, great acting and writing.
It was hilarious! They referenced more than Harry Potter and kept the whole audience entertained! We sat in the front right and were kept as entertained as those in the other parts of the theatre. Well worth seeing and money spent. Hopefully we can see it again soon.
Humor, Joe was cute, covered the essentials of the 7 books with a lot of slapstick thrown in. Actors appeared to enjoy themselves. Game of Quidditch and Snitch being squashed by 6 year old. Dance battle between Voldemort and Harry. Joe spending all money for dragon instead of 25 of best Broadway actors.
I don’t know what I expected but it was a great show. Even without knowing very much about Harry Potter, following the show was not a problem. These 2 guys know how to entertain! I bought tickets for my daughter who is a huge HP fan and she loved it as well. It’s for all ages, in case you were wondering.
We had such a great time. I wish I had taken my son who is not a die hard Harry fan like the rest of us because he would of enjoyed it. The improv and humor was fantastic.
Show was extremely entertaining, engaging, and exciting.
My expectations were quite high for this show It seemed to drag on slowly ; was pretty sub-par on the comedy , jokes , interactions between the actors was not as cohesive as it should have been yo pull off this show . Political injections into the show , totally not necessary or appropriate. Using the Harry Potter hype & followings to get an audience wasn’t good . Sorry , wasn’t thrilled with show. It didn’t meet entertainment expectations.
We had a wonderful time! Both actors were very entertaining and engaging. I laughed out loud more times than I can count.
This show was hilarious! These 2 guys were so entertaining. There was a little dancing, a little singing, some crowd interaction and tons of laughs. Whether you are a die hard Potter fan or have only half seen of one of the movies, you will enjoy this show.
We came into the theater not knowing really what to expect. The actors were fun and the improvisation kept us laughing throughout the hour+ show. I would recommend this to Harry Potter fans even though I do not think you need the knowledge of the books or movies to enjoy it!
Show but too much money for the facility seating and overall length of the show. I would have been more upset if I had bought the more expensive tickets! I’m not a huge Harry Potter fan but my fellow attendee liked the show a lot. I was a little lost on all of the innuendos in the show but overall the two cast members did a good job.
