About

Talk about magic!

British comedy actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner have distilled all 4,200 pages of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels into one brilliantly hilarious 70-minute show. Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience is a lovably loopy two-person performance in which a Potter know-it-all teams up with a rebellious Harry newbie to create a show about -- you guessed it -- Harry Potter.

Clarkson and Turner conceived the show in 2005 as a five-minute sidewalk synopsis to amuse customers queued up for Rowling's sixth Harry novel. They expanded it to an hour the following year and opened at Edinburgh's Zoo Southside. European tours ensued, and in 2012 Potted Potter was nominated for two Olivier Awards, the highest honor in British theater. The show made its off-Broadway debut the same year and has since toured all over the United States and the world. After opening in 2018, the family-friendly Las Vegas production won Best of Last Vegas Awards for Best New Production and Best Value Show.

One actor channels a bookish Harry in Potted Potter while another plays every other character -- including Ron and Hermione, Draco Malfoy, Snape, the Weasleys, Sirius Black, Mad-Eye Moody, Dumbledore and, of course, He Who Must Not Be Named -- with wild abandon. Loads of wigs and other goofy props are employed in a nonstop laugh fest that also features a fire-breathing dragon, countless costume changes, brilliant songs, a plethora of props and even a Quidditch match encouraging audience participation (but no brooms, alas).

Accessible to Potter freaks and newbies alike, Potted Potter blends slapstick in the Laurel & Hardy vaudeville tradition with the wildly witty dialogue associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus. "Potting" is a British term for "the art of summarizing something into a digestible form," and, like all the best parodies, Clarkson and Turner's Harry experience is both splendid spoof and heartfelt homage.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect. Potted Potter was entertaining, fun, and great for the whole family! They had adult humor and lots of silliness for the kiddos! If you have a lighthearted frame of mind - you will enjoy it!

  • Amazing Show

    by D. F. on 3/5/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

I highly recommend seeing this amazing show that is great for adults and wonderful for children or just simply anyone if any age. The actors James Percy and Joseph Maudsley were great funny and had perfect comedic timing. I sincerely enjoyed Potted Potter!

  • Barely about Harry Potter

    by R. on 3/5/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 1 out of 5

This is a comedy routine with a sprinkle of a Harry Potter theme. Not for those looking for an actual fun summary of the books.

Finding bancorp parking was easy but finding our way thru skyway was impossible. Went outside after show so we could see where we were but then couldn’t find elevator to car. It really was a nightmare for us. There are no signs anywhere. Show was just ok, not great

  • Wonderful Show

by SYoung on 3/5/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

This was a well created and performed show! As a family (with teenagers...), all four of us left with sore cheeks from laughing-beginning to end. Well Done!!

  • Glorified Renn Faire Show

by Alicia on 3/4/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 2 out of 5

As a huge Potterhead, I was PSYCHED to see this show! However, what I got was vaguely HP-themed banter by two British guys. It would have been better suited to Renn Faire than a Broadway theater. Or at least advertise it accordingly. Go see Puffs instead. Much better.

  • Funny.....but

    by J. H. on 3/4/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 4 out of 5

They were funny but not for price and where I was sitting. (Row s, middle) the price might have been worth it in the first 5 rows. That’s where they should have dropped. Especially for all the bits about how cheap a production it was to put the act together.

  • Potted Potter

This is definitely a MUST SEE for Harry Potter fans!!! I took my 6 year old and we were both laughing hysterically the whole time! She won’t stop talking about it and was so excited to go!

  • brilliant but spendy

enjoyable, lots of laughs and surprises. was expecting more on terms of set and props. venue is cool and intimate but overall the experience was very spendy for a family of 4.

This show was fantastic! I laughed (hard) for 70 full minutes. I haven't seen anything this funny in a long time. The actors were superb! I had such a good time!

  • A Riot!

Very funny, because they were having fun. Going to a matinee there were kids all over that added to the joy.

  • Just Not That Good

by Potter KFan on 2/26/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 2 out of 5

Theater was good. Actors good. The play just fell short. The play is a retelling of the Harry Potter story in a comedic / slapstick fashion. But it doesn't really add insights or a new viewpoint to the story. For example, "Puff" - another unauthorized Potter play - and it added insight by telling the Harry Potter story from the Hufflepuff point of view. The play really seemed to drag on particularly for our group because we already more than knew the story - and the slapstick was just too much. The play was also advertised as being suitable for ages 6 to Dumbledoor's age but did not deliver. First - "not nice" political commentary on current event is not a family fare. In addition - the main character spilled water on a private area - and then stood at the front of the stage - highlighting the "area" - and asked for the audience to keep their eyes up. The diversions from family fun were just momentary - but that is all it takes. Overall - just not that good a play. They really need to do an over haul.

  • SO funny!!

    by M. J. on 2/26/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

This show was short, but I'm not sure my stomach could have handled much more! From start to finish, these two guys were so entertaining - and I loved the audience participation and what seemed like some random ad libs. Laughed the entire time!

  • Funny, accurate, and engaging

by Maddie on 2/26/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

The show was absolutely fantastic. As an avid Harry Potter fan, I thought they did a great job of finding the funny sides of the very long story and portraying all of the best parts of the Harry Potter story. They also did this through the portrayal of their friendship, that ultimately teaches the same lessons that Harry Potter teaches, that friends are important, especially when you can laugh with them. Overall, it was a great show!!

  • Great show!

The show was really fun, very well done. Would highly recommend to any Harry Potter fan.

  • OK

by Jax on 2/26/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 3 out of 5

Better suited for younger audience. I had greater expectations of the set and costumes given all the details put into the books/movies, just not what I expected.

  • Hilarious Depiction of a modern classic

by CJtheJuice on 2/26/19Pantages Theatre - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

We avoided reviews for this show, and went in as simple Potter fans, not knowing what to expect. We left absolutely amazed. How James and Joe were able to present 7 books in just over an hour was perfectly brilliant. The ad-libs and improvisations were great, and didn't seem forced. The audience interaction was unbelievably appropriate and fun. The entire show was, simply brilliant. Will absolutely get tickets again the next time they are in town. Highly recommended for fans of the Potter books.
