Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens on Tour

In 1985, comedian Paul Reubens brought his geeky man-child alter-ego Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with Pee-wee's Big Adventure — a colorful fusion of fun-loving, family-friendly road-trip flick and bizarro-world midnight-movie experience that both delighted and (thanks to a certain creepy truck driver named Marge) bewildered a generation of kids. The film has gone to become a multigenerational cult classic, and to mark its 35th anniversary, Pee-wee is once again hitting the road — for a multi-city American tour where screenings of the film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Reubens. Like a DVD-commentary track brought to life, Reubens will share behind-the-scenes stories of the film's creation — the perfect chaser to another round of "Tequila!"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens Background

As a member of legendary Los Angeles improv troupe The Groundlings, Paul Reubens developed his irrepressibly manic Pee-wee Herman character as a caricature of a cluelessly bad comedian, decked out in a tight gray suit and nerdy red bowtie. In the early ‘80s, the Pee-wee persona gained notoriety through a popular stage revue, The Pee-wee Herman Show, an irreverent spin on a '50s-era kids program that was a lot more risqué than the childish humor for which he would become famous. After filming the show for a 1981 HBO special, Pee-wee became a recurring guest on Late Night With David Letterman, and gradually transformed from fringe figure to national star. In 1985, Reubens teamed up with a then-unknown young director named Tim Burton to adapt his puppet-populated universe into a feature film about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen vintage Schwinn. The result, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was more kid-oriented than Reubens' stage show, but thanks to Burton's visual ingenuity, still plenty surreal. While not exactly a blockbuster smash in its time, the film was successful enough to spawn the beloved Saturday-morning program Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. And though Reubens retired the character shortly thereafter, the cult of Pee-wee Herman has only continued to grow in the decades since, as parents introduce new generations of kids to his uniquely eccentric charms.

    Really was expecting more

by PhoenixPerson on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

Overpriced for a viewing of a 35 year old film. Was really hoping the talk-back with Paul afterwards would be the true show. Nope, he came out, sat down, and told a few monotone stories that were not that interesting or funny. A few photos were projected onto the screen, but otherwise it was just a red theatre curtain clip art image. We left before it was over, so maybe things livened up later. OH, and be aware...they make you lock up your cell phone for the show! Why, that is, I have no idea. I asked the venue staff about it, and they said it was "per the artist's request." I don't recommend this show.

    So so...

by K. on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

It was ok... Was great to watch the movie. Meet and greet was very expensive to just snap a photo. Paul was mildly entertaining.

    Pee Wee’s Big Adventure

by Lester on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

This was a terrific evening and a great value. So much fun to see PW on the big screen again but the best part was Paul Reubens himself sharing the fascinating, funny and often heartfelt details of making the movie.

    Worst view in these seats

by t. R. on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

We bought tickets last minute on balcony. Could barely see main stage screen from this view and the side screen was obscured by objects and what looked like curtains hanging from the rafters. Very dissapointing considering how gorgeous this facility is.

    Great Experience!

by EKMB on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

What a cool experience! Being able to see the movie on a big screen was awesome, but getting to hear Paul Reubens talk about the making of the movie was just incredible. The crowd had a great vibe and I really enjoyed the whole evening.

    So many things went wrong

by Jenny5309 on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

    1. Security line so long, many people late to show. Organizers should have done several email blasts to queue up very early. 2. Extra expense for VIP useless. Lanyards to be sent in mail later? Sure let me sport them as a fashion accessory. 3. Floor seating miserable when Paul R. Was speaking. He wasn’t high enough so you couldn’t see him. We left early as I was tired of looking at the back of someone’s head.

Started early with line wrapped around the block

by R. on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

Why would the venue open the doors with 10 minutes to start time? We lined up at 7:15, and didn’t get in until 8, while the movie had started. We missed the introduction, and that’s 100% on the venue and production team.

Loved every minute. First time seeing it on a big screen!

by Kat on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

Enjoyed the special clips from 35 years ago. Most of all, I loved Paul Reubens' talk after the movie. He was very humble and gracious. The stories and "untold secrets" were interesting an entertaining. I'm still grinning!

    Not so “Big Adventure”

by Diva on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

Waste of money and time. After enjoying the originality and sheer joy of the movie, Paul Reubens proceeded to bore us. We saw John Cleese live after a showing of Monty Python and The Holy Grail, and thoroughly enjoyed it. His version was done in an interview format and accepted questions from the audience. Reubens just sat by himself and discussed memories in a monotone, with no interaction and now questions. Save your money, just buy the movie or copies of Pee See’s Playhouse.

    Fun with Pee Wee

by Papaw Powers on 3/9/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

A pleasant little trip down memory lane with a great audience and follow up answer session with the man himself. Great show and kudos to the staff of Moody Theatre.

    Over sold!

by Mike on 3/9/20Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San Antonio

Wasn't a fan of the seating at all! Specifically purchased aisle seats from the "pick your seats" option only to find out they weren't! Way to stuff in the chairs on the lower level!

    Genius

by SusieT on 3/8/20Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San Antonio

The show was totally amazing and better than I could have ever imagined! Paul Rubens is a genius! The way he sat "with" us after the show and revealed his reasons for writing this particular movie, his feelings about certain scenes in the movie and his thoughts about the movie and the cast of characters was overwhelming, I wish I could remember every word he spoke to us. I regret that I didn't purchase the VIP Meet & Greet tickets!!! If you have the chance to purchase VIP, DO IT!!!

    Plenty of laughs!

by A. O. on 3/8/20Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San Antonio

I had a great time watching the movie with a bunch of other fans laughing and cheering! Enjoyed the opening and closing interviews before the actual movie from MTV classic footage. The best part, it was in San Antonio! When Paul Rubens came out he was quite humble and friendly. He did not play the part of Pee Wee nor did he have that crazy beahvior, but it showed us who he was as an actor and celebrity. He told great stories of the making of the film with jokes in between. In the end you realized he was quite humbled by the fans love of this classic comedy and how we came together to still enjoy this good time humor.

    Behind the Movie

by MarcoAA on 3/8/20Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San Antonio

Great behind the scenes stories after the movie. It gives you another level of appreciation for the movie, the characters, and the professional Paul Ruebens (aka PeeWee Herman).

by Kim on 3/8/20Aztec Theatre presented by Cricket Wireless - San Antonio

Going to see Pee-Wee Herman fluttered me with childhood memories of watching this movie at home. He did not disappoint. Being in San Antonio was even better since the punchline takes place in my home city.

    Not so VIP for event

by KB on 3/6/20Paramount Theatre - Denver

The event itself was great however, there was a VIP package that was to be sent in the mail, to date, it has not been received. I spent quite a bit to be VIP and while it was great to take a photo, I'd really like to receive the rest of what I paid for
