Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens on Tour

In 1985, comedian Paul Reubens brought his geeky man-child alter-ego Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with Pee-wee's Big Adventure — a colorful fusion of fun-loving, family-friendly road-trip flick and bizarro-world midnight-movie experience that both delighted and (thanks to a certain creepy truck driver named Marge) bewildered a generation of kids. The film has gone to become a multigenerational cult classic, and to mark its 35th anniversary, Pee-wee is once again hitting the road — for a multi-city American tour where screenings of the film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Reubens. Like a DVD-commentary track brought to life, Reubens will share behind-the-scenes stories of the film's creation — the perfect chaser to another round of "Tequila!"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens Background

As a member of legendary Los Angeles improv troupe The Groundlings, Paul Reubens developed his irrepressibly manic Pee-wee Herman character as a caricature of a cluelessly bad comedian, decked out in a tight gray suit and nerdy red bowtie. In the early ‘80s, the Pee-wee persona gained notoriety through a popular stage revue, The Pee-wee Herman Show, an irreverent spin on a '50s-era kids program that was a lot more risqué than the childish humor for which he would become famous. After filming the show for a 1981 HBO special, Pee-wee became a recurring guest on Late Night With David Letterman, and gradually transformed from fringe figure to national star. In 1985, Reubens teamed up with a then-unknown young director named Tim Burton to adapt his puppet-populated universe into a feature film about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen vintage Schwinn. The result, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was more kid-oriented than Reubens' stage show, but thanks to Burton's visual ingenuity, still plenty surreal. While not exactly a blockbuster smash in its time, the film was successful enough to spawn the beloved Saturday-morning program Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. And though Reubens retired the character shortly thereafter, the cult of Pee-wee Herman has only continued to grow in the decades since, as parents introduce new generations of kids to his uniquely eccentric charms.

    Nostalgic Time Capsule

by Assface on 3/12/20Majestic Theatre Dallas - Dallas

Was a nice time capsule of watching the movie for the first time in a long time and then listening to the stories and firsthand accounts of how movie was made. Very interesting to learn info on stories that just can't be Googled. And no, he did not talk about the scandal that brought him down. As he stated, not a Q & A....more like an A. But very enjoyable and recommended...

    Don't bring your phone

    by R. B. on 3/12/20Majestic Theatre Dallas - Dallas

The show was great. The fact that I had to put my phone in a locked neoprene sleeve was offensive.

    Disappointing

by Seanthemerchguy on 3/12/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

The movie was great as we all know. But the stories from Paul were boring and not well thought out. The ‘behind the scenes’ photos after the movie were scarce and not particularly amusing. This would of been good in a small club, but in front of 2000+ people?? Sitting down behind A table?? The WORST part was paying $226.50 for 3 tickets?? I thought for that price you’d be able to at least ask a question? Or just have thought out ahead of time exactly what to say. He spoke for 20 of his 60 minutes about how he got Tim Burton to direct?? That story could of taken 3-4 min tops. On top of all that, $10 parking, $20 for 2 waters and a popcorn, etc. An expensive night to watch the movie.

Keep Alive the Joy of the Child Within

by B. on 3/11/20Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater - Austin

Ah, to forget about the current state of affairs, and laugh! Good times! I enjoyed the premiere footage, of course the film, and the audience enthusiasm. Paul Reubens is a good storyteller, and it was heartwarming to know there are other enthusiasts like myself. Thank You Paul Reubens for providing levity, and fun facts about the movie!

    A 80s thing

by Grumpus on 3/11/20Majestic Theatre Dallas - Dallas

Well done between the flashback to opening night with MTV host, to the movie, to the MTV after party and finally Pee Wee! Just the A was great, just long enough and entertaining!

    Was fantastic

by Takerpuff on 3/11/20Majestic Theatre Dallas - Dallas

The screening of the movie was like a rocky horror picture show everybody knew the words and had a fantastic time and then when Paul Ruben came out after the movie he talked for about an hour and it was really cool to have the insight into his life in the making of the movie

    Great Show

    by J. G. on 3/11/20Majestic Theatre Dallas - Dallas

Was a great night. The fact that the whole crowd was so into the show made it great. Everyone enjoying the movie and then when Paul Reubens spoke afterwards was awesome.

    Horrible

by Ali on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

Paid $212.00 for 2 tickets to a horrible re-play of Pee Wees Great Adventure movie. Uncomfortable seating, a 35 year old movie, and a boring story time with Paul Reubens. Show started late because they were backed up taking everyone's phone away. Walked out early, had no idea this is what the show would be. Thought it was a live Playhouse re-do. Will never see him again. Rip off!!!! Found out that other people paid $40.00 a ticket for same seats. Not happy!

    Cameras/Q&A

by Mar on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

The show was great. Loved that they showed the premier from 35 years ago. Wish he would've allowed cameras and had a Q&A. Otherwise it was a great experience!

Great to see Pee Wee! Ticketmaster Not So Great.

    by D. E. on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

It was great to see a personal side of Paul Reubens in the flesh as he is today. The film and his commentary demonstrated his amazing creativity and talent for comedy. He seemed very human and to be someone you would thoroughly enjoy as a friend or acquaintance. My only gripe was the Ticketmaster policy of requiring a digital ticket on your smartphone, only to be required to wait on lines for an agent to lock and again to unlock your phone in a secure pouch when you enter and leave the venue. Why would I take pictures of a movie being shown anyway? I would have brought only a paper ticket printed at home if I could. How annoying and what a waste of time and staff resources!

Pee See’s Big Adventure = time machine to your childhood

by Fez on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

Watching Pee See’s Big Adventure was a blast from the past! I hadn’t seen it since I was 10 or so and there was a lot going on in that movie that I wasn’t aware of. Even if you don’t go to the 35th Anniversary show, watch the movie again, it’s worth it! But if you watch it at home, you’ll miss out on Paul Reuben’s stories behind the movie, which was really interesting.

Saw Pee Wee's Big Adventure with appearance by Paul Reubens

by ketchup201 on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

It was great walking down memory lane watching that movie again. I was surrounded by 'super fans' who knew all the great lines and it felt like I was part of the action. I found it really enjoyable. Paul Reubens came out and gave us a behind the scenes look at how that movie evolved. It's fascinating how much time, effort, and courage it took to get that movie done. Paul's delivery was extremely subdued and lacked the energy I was hoping to see. But regardless, I was blown away with some of his backstories. Definitely recommend it!

    Pee Wee rides again

    by M. P. on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

It was watch the original movie plus some extra footage of Rubens at the premiere before and after the screening. Then after the movie, Paul Rubens came out and talked about the experience of being in and making this movie. It would've been better if he introduced the movie. Then took an intermission with a few words. Then spoke a bit at the end.

    An excellent evening!

by Francis BuxTON on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

Paul was not what I expected. I was expecting the zany, hyper Pee Wee, but Paul was quieter, almost subdued in his delivery. But he was genuinely funny and warm, and the whole experience was wonderful.

Loved it with only one exception

by GW on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

The show itself was perfection. We were well taken care of by staff (my husband walks with a cane). They brought us down in the elevator and escorted us to our seats. And the movie/talkback experience truly was everything I hoped it would be. BUT I hated being treated like a child in having my phone locked away. We had NO idea this was going to be the case and my husband is on call for work 24/7. We were told we could come up and get it unlocked whenever we wanted, but my husband has a disability AND we paid a pretty penny for our seats. So he couldn't/didn't want to have to sacrifice up to 20 minutes each time (taking the elevator up, and down, etc) so that he could get it unlocked at guest services and then come back.) This Yondr bag practice is insulting. I will never attend another event that uses them.

    Meh

by AmyJ on 3/10/20Arizona Federal Theatre - Phoenix

Know in advance they will lock up your phone, so might as well leave it in the car. The movie part was fun, but Paul Rubens sitting in a chair talking for an hour was boring. Plus no intermission, so keep that in mind. I thought it’d be more fun to just host a viewing party at my house with friends.
