Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens on Tour

In 1985, comedian Paul Reubens brought his geeky man-child alter-ego Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with Pee-wee's Big Adventure — a colorful fusion of fun-loving, family-friendly road-trip flick and bizarro-world midnight-movie experience that both delighted and (thanks to a certain creepy truck driver named Marge) bewildered a generation of kids. The film has gone to become a multigenerational cult classic, and to mark its 35th anniversary, Pee-wee is once again hitting the road — for a multi-city American tour where screenings of the film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Reubens. Like a DVD-commentary track brought to life, Reubens will share behind-the-scenes stories of the film's creation — the perfect chaser to another round of "Tequila!"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens Background

As a member of legendary Los Angeles improv troupe The Groundlings, Paul Reubens developed his irrepressibly manic Pee-wee Herman character as a caricature of a cluelessly bad comedian, decked out in a tight gray suit and nerdy red bowtie. In the early ‘80s, the Pee-wee persona gained notoriety through a popular stage revue, The Pee-wee Herman Show, an irreverent spin on a '50s-era kids program that was a lot more risqué than the childish humor for which he would become famous. After filming the show for a 1981 HBO special, Pee-wee became a recurring guest on Late Night With David Letterman, and gradually transformed from fringe figure to national star. In 1985, Reubens teamed up with a then-unknown young director named Tim Burton to adapt his puppet-populated universe into a feature film about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen vintage Schwinn. The result, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was more kid-oriented than Reubens' stage show, but thanks to Burton's visual ingenuity, still plenty surreal. While not exactly a blockbuster smash in its time, the film was successful enough to spawn the beloved Saturday-morning program Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. And though Reubens retired the character shortly thereafter, the cult of Pee-wee Herman has only continued to grow in the decades since, as parents introduce new generations of kids to his uniquely eccentric charms.

P doesn't miss a beat in his Nokia show. For all generations of pee wee fans you will come away from this show all smiles. All the faves return and the set is outrageous! My only note for the p meister is to continue to incorporate contemporary pop culture references into the show. The new gear works so well...we all want more. Pee wee is a maximum good time.

    Welcome Back, Pee-wee!

by VargasDomesticus on 1/13/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

My expectations were high for this show, but nothing could have prepared me for the moment when they raised the curtain and the interior of the original playhouse was revealed. Many of the original puppet characters were there - Chairy, Globey, Mappy, Pterri, the talking fish, the daiseys, and Randy. Some of the original actors also returned including Miss Yvonne, Jambi, and Mike the Mailman. Pee-wee (Paul Reubens) was simply incredible. He still looks the same after all these years, and is able to flawlessly portray his original character. The show was true to his first stage show that ran in the '80's and later aired on HBO, with some minor changes made to account for characters that couldn't be there (Captain Carl's character, orginally played by Phil Hartman, was retired). The show starts out by revealing the days secret word, "Fun", and The Pee-wee Herman show was nothing less than this. It was easily one of the best stage shows I have ever seen. Welcome back, Pee-wee! We've missed you!

He rocked from beginning to end. The show was what was expected yet better and more imaginative with out giving up the true spirit of "the PWH Show".

by middleway on 1/13/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

Well this show faces steep expectations, how can you bring something to life again after 2 decades when it was so dayglo and brilliant ... and Peewee pulled it off! It is great fun, the characters are all there and it is hilarious. Jambi got meaner ... and funnier. The secret word was FUN last night and it was true, it was FUN FUN FUN

by Cyana on 8/16/09Anywhere near Chattanooga, Tn, Knoxville, Nashville or Atlanta, Georgia PLEASE!!! - Chattanooga

I have loved PeeWee ever since I first laid eyes on his Saturday morning show in the 80's. I was in high school when it aired and I have loved (and missed) PeeWee all these years since the show went off the air. Now, I have turned over my collectibles and VHS cassettes of PeeWee's Playhouse to my 4 year old niece who adores him too. She calls him "Kee-Weed" and just loves him. What an amazing character. He will always be in our hearts and there is no one else like him. We love you PeeWee!!! Paul Reubens, you are a genius and I hope you will continue to treat us to your most brilliant self as the artist that you are!

    Pee Wee Herman is BACK!!!

by eviltikimonkey on 8/11/09Music Box - Hollywood

I have been waiting for this since 1985! It has been my dream to witness the brilliance that is Pee Wee in real life and anyone that grew up with Pee Wee's Playhouse knows what I am talking about. Pee Wee Herman Live will prove once and for all that the world has been waiting for Pee Wee and the time is right for the return of Pee Wee and his pals!!! I can only hope that this marks the first of many Pee Wee sightings on stage and screens. Thank you Pee Wee for making my dream come true and bringing me back to the youthful humor and timelessness that is you. ~Curt
