Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens on Tour

In 1985, comedian Paul Reubens brought his geeky man-child alter-ego Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with Pee-wee's Big Adventure — a colorful fusion of fun-loving, family-friendly road-trip flick and bizarro-world midnight-movie experience that both delighted and (thanks to a certain creepy truck driver named Marge) bewildered a generation of kids. The film has gone to become a multigenerational cult classic, and to mark its 35th anniversary, Pee-wee is once again hitting the road — for a multi-city American tour where screenings of the film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Reubens. Like a DVD-commentary track brought to life, Reubens will share behind-the-scenes stories of the film's creation — the perfect chaser to another round of "Tequila!"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens Background

As a member of legendary Los Angeles improv troupe The Groundlings, Paul Reubens developed his irrepressibly manic Pee-wee Herman character as a caricature of a cluelessly bad comedian, decked out in a tight gray suit and nerdy red bowtie. In the early ‘80s, the Pee-wee persona gained notoriety through a popular stage revue, The Pee-wee Herman Show, an irreverent spin on a '50s-era kids program that was a lot more risqué than the childish humor for which he would become famous. After filming the show for a 1981 HBO special, Pee-wee became a recurring guest on Late Night With David Letterman, and gradually transformed from fringe figure to national star. In 1985, Reubens teamed up with a then-unknown young director named Tim Burton to adapt his puppet-populated universe into a feature film about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen vintage Schwinn. The result, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was more kid-oriented than Reubens' stage show, but thanks to Burton's visual ingenuity, still plenty surreal. While not exactly a blockbuster smash in its time, the film was successful enough to spawn the beloved Saturday-morning program Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. And though Reubens retired the character shortly thereafter, the cult of Pee-wee Herman has only continued to grow in the decades since, as parents introduce new generations of kids to his uniquely eccentric charms.

  • Wiltern staff where were you?

Paul’s show was great but the microphone kept going out and no one came out to help him, his mic went out more than 5 times and torwards the end a sound tech came out to finally help. I think they should’ve helped him the first time. Then when he was talking about a slide he wanted the audience to see he was cueing the staff and it didn’t come on the screen, it seemed like the sound and visuals staff weren’t very supportive. I still enjoyed the show and think the actor Paul handled it perfectly, I just wished someone helped him earlier.

Like pretty much everyone, I have always loved this movie, so the opportunity to celebrate it with a post-screening talk by the man himself was way too good to pass up. The screening was really well done because it started with about 10 minutes of footage from MTV's original broadcast of the film's 1985 premiere in Hollywood. After the screening ended, we got another 5-10 minutes of post-premiere footage from MTV, so it almost felt like we'd been transported back to 1985 and were watching it real-time for the first time. So why 4 stars instead of 5? I opted for the meet-and-greet, which I figured would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I don't regret it at all, but have to say I was hoping for a bit more. While everything ran pretty much on time, Paul was unenthusiastic, and said almost nothing to me or the people who went immediately before and after me. So if you're going to this and considering buying the photo op, it's worth it just to meet Paul in person -- just be prepared for a pretty underwhelming encounter.

only for the hardcore pee-wee herman fans.merchandise was way too expensive.I'm so glad they didn't decide to show the new pee-wee's big holiday movie(on netflix).because that one was written by a 5th grader.but it was pretty cool getting to see paul rueben talk about the making of both films.I was excited to go home & be able to watch the new Big Holiday movie which I didn't know about until he was talking about it that night.and it had already been out for a few years. But when I got home & tried to watch it ,I only lasted for the 1st 20 min.I was like,What A JOKE.this seemed more like it shoulda been the practice movie before he made the Big Adventure or somethin.Don't watch it;your respect for pee-wee might disappear

My inner 6 year old is still shrieking. It was a childhood dream come true. I'm so thankful he decided to do this. Definitely go.

  • Pricey but worth it

by Wayne on 3/4/20The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Had a great time, wasn’t cheap but definitely worth the experience. The crowd was great, Paul Rubens was entertaining and the behind the scenes photos/videos were fun to see. The Wiltern, with its floor crammed with rows of old fold out chairs and $20 beers, was a pretty lame venue for a movie. Other than that, merch table was somewhat limited and about double the price you’d expect.

  • Meh

by WendyD on 3/4/20The Wiltern - Los AngelesRating: 2 out of 5

First off, it would be nice if the venue had its own parking. Street and pay lots are a pain and can be hard to find. Second we had to lock up our phones for a 35 year old movie, so we had no idea what time it was. No one wears a watch anymore! The show started late and ran until almost 11 pm. Tough on a school night with kids, when he said he was going to try not to go on too long. The Wiltern is a very strange place. We were sitting on bar stools. The whole lower level had temporary seating. The concession prices were outrageously expensive. $7 for a small popcorn. It would have been nice if he took some questions from the audience. Some of the stories he told were interesting and entertaining. I thought my kids would like it, having seen the movie before, but they were bored and didn't like. My 10-year old daughter was freaked out by large Marge and wanted to leave right after. Unfortunately, it was not a very good experience. Would not go again for the 40th, 45th, or 50th anniversary.

It was super enjoyable to watch this movie with so many PeeWee fans. Paul Reubens could’ve gone on for ever talking about the process of making his first film. Bravo!

The movie is a classic and Paul Ruebens shared a little behind the scenes moments of the the making of the movie... I would have like a few cast members to be present to share the overall experience... I grew up with Pee-Wees playhouse.... and I adore Paul Rubens...

The movie was great to see again with a large group of fans, but the Q&A needs a lot of work. Maybe a multimedia presentation. Music, guests, photos, etc...

  • Very nostalgic but a long night

by Annoyed on 3/3/20Spreckels Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

I loved watching the movie with a crowd and the talk Paul Reubens Gabe was an insiders treat. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had not been sitting in the most uncomfortable theater seat ever. The first row of the mezzanine in Spreckles Theater is worse than any coach airline. Absolutely no leg room. Couldn’t cross my legs or straighten them. Sooo painful.

I bought the VIP package and I am so happy I did. Granted, he wasn’t too personable.... but i don’t care. I paid for the experience and that’s exactly what I had. It was surreal to see this movie on the big screen again. And to have him come out after to talk about the making of the movie was great.

  • Fantastic Event For Our Whole Family!

by Dollar Did It on 3/3/20Spreckels Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This was such a fantastic 35th-anniversary screening of “Pee-wee Herman’s Big Adventure” with Paul Reubens coming on stage after, sharing photos, how it was to work with Tim Burton & Danny Elfman, telling us about behind the scenes, and how much he appreciated that even after 35 years, this movie still meant so much to so many people. He even shared a funny story about a butterfly and turning three, and a touching story about his parents attending the opening. I think it must be a sign of things to come.

  • Had a amazing time!

by Catmomma on 3/3/20Spreckels Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

What a fun night! Got to see Peewee's Big Adventure on the big screen and then Paul Reuben's talked for a good 90 minutes or more afterward. Only reason I didnt give 5 stars is the venue has some issues. My husband's seat was falling apart and the restrooms near the balcony were no longer in service so you had to go a long way out to use a restroom. I love a historic theater but this one needs some maintenance. Our friends had a ig screw fall out of their seat as well.

  • Best night ever!

Seeing this movie on the big screen made my life! Paul Reubens is amazing, hilarious, sweet etc etc! I will be thinking about this night for years! I wish I could rewind and relive this event! Spreckles theater in San Diego is beautiful and historic and the process of checking in was smooth, and they even had a bar! It was all just so wonderful!

  • Everything you’d hope for!

by BR on 3/3/20Spreckels Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

From beginning to end, this presentation was spectacular! The MTV premiere footage was new to me and really funny. The movie was just as good this time as it always has been. Paul Reubens’ after presentation was enlightening and humorous. Reliving this event has been a hot topic at work this week.
