Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens on Tour

In 1985, comedian Paul Reubens brought his geeky man-child alter-ego Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with Pee-wee's Big Adventure — a colorful fusion of fun-loving, family-friendly road-trip flick and bizarro-world midnight-movie experience that both delighted and (thanks to a certain creepy truck driver named Marge) bewildered a generation of kids. The film has gone to become a multigenerational cult classic, and to mark its 35th anniversary, Pee-wee is once again hitting the road — for a multi-city American tour where screenings of the film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Reubens. Like a DVD-commentary track brought to life, Reubens will share behind-the-scenes stories of the film's creation — the perfect chaser to another round of "Tequila!"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens Background

As a member of legendary Los Angeles improv troupe The Groundlings, Paul Reubens developed his irrepressibly manic Pee-wee Herman character as a caricature of a cluelessly bad comedian, decked out in a tight gray suit and nerdy red bowtie. In the early ‘80s, the Pee-wee persona gained notoriety through a popular stage revue, The Pee-wee Herman Show, an irreverent spin on a '50s-era kids program that was a lot more risqué than the childish humor for which he would become famous. After filming the show for a 1981 HBO special, Pee-wee became a recurring guest on Late Night With David Letterman, and gradually transformed from fringe figure to national star. In 1985, Reubens teamed up with a then-unknown young director named Tim Burton to adapt his puppet-populated universe into a feature film about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen vintage Schwinn. The result, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was more kid-oriented than Reubens' stage show, but thanks to Burton's visual ingenuity, still plenty surreal. While not exactly a blockbuster smash in its time, the film was successful enough to spawn the beloved Saturday-morning program Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. And though Reubens retired the character shortly thereafter, the cult of Pee-wee Herman has only continued to grow in the decades since, as parents introduce new generations of kids to his uniquely eccentric charms.

    PEE WEE's back!!!

by Anonymous on 1/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

Classic and fantastic - Pee Wee hasn't aged a bit, and he's as funny and campy as ever. The place was packed and Pee Wee had everyone laughing (and screaming whenever anyone said the word of the day) throughout the show. It's not to be missed!

Pee-Wee's Comeback was worth the wait!

by Jill853 on 1/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

We flew all the way across the country to see this show! It was worth every dollar, every minute, and all the work missed. This show brought back the nostalgia of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, while incorporating new characters (don't be afraid), a slight re-casting of Cowboy Curtis (used to be Lawrence Fishburne, now played by Phil LaMarr - but he was awesome!), and original favorites like Miss Yvonne and Jambi. Pee-Wee's Playhouse gets the audience interacting from the moment the show starts, which had folks on their feet applauding within the first minutes. The rest of the show is paced so quickly, that we found ourselves cutting our laughter short to hear what the next line would be. All in all, the best stage show I've seen in years, and hopefully a resurrection of this beloved television icon.

Great show, but I couldn't see part of the stage! The Nokia Theater is NOT a good set up for a play performance.

    Pee-wee is back!

by Funtographer on 1/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

I remember first seeing Pee-wee's Playhouse many years ago. Back then I thought it was pretty kookie and very fun. Now many years later, I found the show to be even better. In many ways, Pee-wee Herman is a big slice of Americana; the freedom to imagine, the freedom to feel as if we were a children again. Although there are many adult jokes there is also a sense of innocents that Pee-wee portrays. Paul Ruben's character is lovable and filled with big dreams. I loved the show. I hope I get a chance to see it again. Thanks Pee-wee for making it OK to wish, love, and laugh.

    by r2deb2 on 1/15/10NOKIA - Los Angeles

We've missed you Pee Wee! The production of this show was incredible! Pee Wee is as adorable, wacky, and loveable as he ever was. You will laugh, enjoy, and have FUN! The crowd loved the performances, and it seemed to go by way too quickly, we just couldn't get enough! My friend and I traveled from the east coast to see PW, and it was a long trip, but well worth it. Long live Pee Wee!

This is the best experience I have ever had at the theater. Every aspect of the show, from the music, to the performances, to the technical aspects were absolutely phenomenal. I felt like I was five again. Sitting in the living room on Saturday morning singing along with the tv. Paul Reubens is a living legend and an entertainment treasure. I speak for me and my friend that came with, this is a must see show.

Pee Wee Herman - Never Better!

by RikinLA on 1/15/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

This was only the third performance of the show, and it started about 10 minutes late, but once Pee-Wee came out his charm and chemistry with the source material came out for a tour de force 90 minutes of comedy aimed at adults, but also safe for children. All the seats in the theater are close, and even the general admission would be fine for people that don't mind standing. I can't wait to go again!

by Johnna81 on 1/14/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

I've loved PeeWee since I was a little girl, so when the opportunity came up to see him I had to get tickets. The show was better than I could have ever imagined. With the manners video and cartoon nothing was left out. I even bought tickets to see the show again I loved it so much.
