Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens on Tour

In 1985, comedian Paul Reubens brought his geeky man-child alter-ego Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with Pee-wee's Big Adventure — a colorful fusion of fun-loving, family-friendly road-trip flick and bizarro-world midnight-movie experience that both delighted and (thanks to a certain creepy truck driver named Marge) bewildered a generation of kids. The film has gone to become a multigenerational cult classic, and to mark its 35th anniversary, Pee-wee is once again hitting the road — for a multi-city American tour where screenings of the film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Reubens. Like a DVD-commentary track brought to life, Reubens will share behind-the-scenes stories of the film's creation — the perfect chaser to another round of "Tequila!"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens Background

As a member of legendary Los Angeles improv troupe The Groundlings, Paul Reubens developed his irrepressibly manic Pee-wee Herman character as a caricature of a cluelessly bad comedian, decked out in a tight gray suit and nerdy red bowtie. In the early ‘80s, the Pee-wee persona gained notoriety through a popular stage revue, The Pee-wee Herman Show, an irreverent spin on a '50s-era kids program that was a lot more risqué than the childish humor for which he would become famous. After filming the show for a 1981 HBO special, Pee-wee became a recurring guest on Late Night With David Letterman, and gradually transformed from fringe figure to national star. In 1985, Reubens teamed up with a then-unknown young director named Tim Burton to adapt his puppet-populated universe into a feature film about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen vintage Schwinn. The result, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was more kid-oriented than Reubens' stage show, but thanks to Burton's visual ingenuity, still plenty surreal. While not exactly a blockbuster smash in its time, the film was successful enough to spawn the beloved Saturday-morning program Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. And though Reubens retired the character shortly thereafter, the cult of Pee-wee Herman has only continued to grow in the decades since, as parents introduce new generations of kids to his uniquely eccentric charms.

  • Nostalgic and hilarious

To a child of the 80's there are few things more exciting than the revival of Pee-wee Herman. The new show, which was a combination of the original stage show and the Pee-wee's Playhouse, gave you everything you'd want to remember: the characters, the foil ball, the word of the day, etc... while mixing in some new surprises. The age of the actors is showing a bit, but despite this the show is overwhelmingly fresh and for a good hour or so I was transported back to being an 8 year old on Saturday morning. The only downside is that people who rescheduled their tickets from the original venue were told that they would get to meet Pee-wee. This was changed to more of a Q&A after they tried a meet & greet where people only actually got to spend about two seconds meeting him personally. I would gladly have taken the two seconds. I really wanted to meet Pee-wee.

It's amazing how things NEVER change! It was just as if we were watching the TV show from years ago!!

I can't say enough about how awesome this show was. Everything you would want and expect Pee Wee to be.

The show was enjoyable and fulfilled my desire for nostalgia. The set was perfectly replicated and in a nutshell the whole show and cast was endearing. My only disappointment was I hoped for a few more laughs. I think I was expecting a little more double entendres, adult humor, etc. since I was attending without little kids in tow (in fact the kids that I used to watch Pee-Wee with are now adults.) I think it has a lot of potential; there is so much talent behind it, I know it could be tweaked a little to satisfy all adult audiences. I brought my 18 yr. old daughter who didn't really have a frame of reference for Pee-wee(she wasn't born til '92), except for PW's Big Adventure movie, so the playhouse setting kind of baffled her and she didn't see what the big deal was about the show, hence a little adult humor would have made it more relevant and worthwhile to her. I am so glad that Paul Reubens is back on the scene; good luck!

  • Pee Wee was outstanding!

As a second generation fan of Pee Wee Herman, my family and I totally enjoyed the show. It was worth the wait! We were originally scheduled to see the show in November, but that venue was canceled and scheduled to the Nokia. It has been over 20 years that we heard Pee Wee's voice. It iwas truly great to hear him again. A great talent and a great artistic mind that had been dormant for over 20 years, now is back! Thank you to all the fans who support Pee Wee and lets continue to support a very great arts performer. Go Pee Wee!

  • Pee wee brought me back to my childhood!!!

    by Chrissy909 on 1/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

When the curtain opens and you first see the play house: chairy, fish, flowers in window, globey...you become SO happy. Pee wee did a fantastic performance and I was smiling/laughing the whole way through.

Never before has anything brought me so vividly back to childhood. This show was hands down the most fun stage production I have ever seen. Truly something very special.

  • I loved it so much... I could MARRY it!

by mexjugo on 1/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

True to his form, Pee-Wee, delivered an awesome show. Although, the show had a few technical glitches. Miss Yvonne's mic did not work, but Pee-Wee improvised, by getting up all in her space. It was hilarious! Overall, it was enjoyable for all and I am so happy to have been able to see Pee-Wee make a comeback on stage.

  • great show!

They replicated the playhouse perfectly on stage! It was so cool. Had no idea Miss Ivonne was Charlie's mom from It's Always Sunny till I read the program. And some of the MAD TV crew like Phil Lemar playing Cowboy Curtis added a lot to the show. Very funny and entertaining. They put so much work into this show to make it perfect, and you could tell! We were lucky enough to be a part of the Meet and Greet after the show since we had tickets to the original show that was canceled. You could tell Paul really appreciated everyone coming to the show, and for being fans for so many years. Such a nice guy! You gotta catch the show while you can!

  • Pee Wee in review...

by duckydame on 1/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

First off I must say I am a big Pee Wee fan from the 80's ( dating myself) I was thrilled ti see Pee Wee on the Jimmy Kimmel show promoting the Nokia show . I immediately booked the show! I remembered the material that he used from years past which was fun(YEAHHHH!) But was hoping for his adult material from Pee Wee's tree house that he did on HBO years back. For that I was a bit disappointed! I missed Captain Carl he was the one that Miss Yvonne has a crush on not cowboy Curtis! I was pleased to see Paul back as Pee Wee but I would suggest some updated material in the mix to keep us old timers happy!

  • Pee Wee was great!

by Anonymous on 1/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time at the show. The meet and greet was the icing on the cake. My only complaint would be that the upper balcony seats on the sides didn't have a view of the sides of the stage. Any part of the show that happened there could not be seen.

  • Fun show/Not so fun venue

by Drewguy on 1/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

The performance was great. Great energy. Well put together and fun. The venue was also very nice. Considering I paid top dollar for seats I was really disappointed by the location. I will know better next time.

  • Still the Zaniest Boy in Puppetland!

by sumfabgear on 1/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

From start to finish, Pee Wee was magical. The set looks exactly as it did on the show. Although not all characters returned to the playhouse (Hey Pee Wee, how about having the Beatniks as the house band??) the recreation was fabulous. I couldn't stop smiling the ENTIRE SHOW!! Any Pee Wee fan, die-hard or newbie, will be in stiches!! Quintessential Pee Wee and a true night to re-live and remember .

  • Ha ha, Made You Look!

Listen to reason, this show is amazing! It totally transported me to when I was 10 years old. Pee Wee is better than ever, and this show is the beginning of a whole new adventure with the luckiest boy int world. Run, do not walk to the Playhouse, and pray that it goes on tour.

Loved the show! It was sooo *FUN* ;) And thanks, Paul Reubens, for the after-show meet and greet (for all the people who purchased tickets to the original shows). Very gracious & appreciated.

  • Pee Wee Better Than Ever!

by Guinney on 1/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Perfect stage reproduction of the incredible TV show. The visual effects, timing, and witty dialogue were everything one could want. Paul Reubens hasn't aged a bit, and presents the Pee Wee character with all the energy and talent of the past. A few timely topics are added into the show and the usual innuendos are present and hilarious. All in all, a great time for all ages in a perfect venue.

  • Great show!
