Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens on Tour

In 1985, comedian Paul Reubens brought his geeky man-child alter-ego Pee-wee Herman to the big screen with Pee-wee's Big Adventure — a colorful fusion of fun-loving, family-friendly road-trip flick and bizarro-world midnight-movie experience that both delighted and (thanks to a certain creepy truck driver named Marge) bewildered a generation of kids. The film has gone to become a multigenerational cult classic, and to mark its 35th anniversary, Pee-wee is once again hitting the road — for a multi-city American tour where screenings of the film will be followed by a live Q&A session with Reubens. Like a DVD-commentary track brought to life, Reubens will share behind-the-scenes stories of the film's creation — the perfect chaser to another round of "Tequila!"

Pee-wee's Big Adventure 35th Anniversary Tour With Paul Reubens Background

As a member of legendary Los Angeles improv troupe The Groundlings, Paul Reubens developed his irrepressibly manic Pee-wee Herman character as a caricature of a cluelessly bad comedian, decked out in a tight gray suit and nerdy red bowtie. In the early ‘80s, the Pee-wee persona gained notoriety through a popular stage revue, The Pee-wee Herman Show, an irreverent spin on a '50s-era kids program that was a lot more risqué than the childish humor for which he would become famous. After filming the show for a 1981 HBO special, Pee-wee became a recurring guest on Late Night With David Letterman, and gradually transformed from fringe figure to national star. In 1985, Reubens teamed up with a then-unknown young director named Tim Burton to adapt his puppet-populated universe into a feature film about Pee-wee's cross-country search for his stolen vintage Schwinn. The result, Pee-wee's Big Adventure, was more kid-oriented than Reubens' stage show, but thanks to Burton's visual ingenuity, still plenty surreal. While not exactly a blockbuster smash in its time, the film was successful enough to spawn the beloved Saturday-morning program Pee-wee's Playhouse, which ran on CBS from 1986 to 1990. And though Reubens retired the character shortly thereafter, the cult of Pee-wee Herman has only continued to grow in the decades since, as parents introduce new generations of kids to his uniquely eccentric charms.

    PeeWee is the Greatest!

by dmb619 on 1/14/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

What a great show! It was great to see PeeWee, Miss Yvonne, Jambi and Mailman Mike again! They looked really good, as did the set. The rest of the cast, while not the originals, did a fine job, as well. The story was funny and timely. If I didn't live 2 hours from the theatre, I'd be there every night! The only problem was that some audience members were allowed to take pictures during the show but I was told by an usher not to. :(

A perfect combination of his cabaret show filmed for HBO at The Roxy and his Saturday morning program! Great cast, great puppetry, great lighting and sound! There was something for every fan. They need to release a soundtrack! Swag wasn't too expensive either! GO GO GO! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :)

    Pee-wee is STILL the best!

by Markasey on 1/14/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

The new Pee-wee Herman Show at Club Nokia is the best live event I've ever been to-- what a blast! The whole gang is back and it's like a combination of his original Roxy show combined with Pee-wee's Playhouse. Fun and hilarious from beginning to end!

    Paul's Back in Style!

by JamesL on 1/14/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

Venue is very stylish and mostly oriented towards music groups - so I'd ignore the general admission (non-seated) tickets as the flat floor won't give any visibility to theatrical acts such as the Playhouse. Contrary to other reports of sticky floors and spilled drinks, I didn't see any such conditions - the drink holders are on the chair arms (movie theater seating). Costuming is over-the-top great and a welcome visit back to 20 years ago, updated with modern flair! Great visuals! Music could have been pumped up a little louder actually. I'd go 5 stars, if the blocking and staging were modified a bit for the larger venue (it seems like the actors are only playing to center-stage orchestra, rather than the wide crescent 2-layer audience (balcony has great visibility, with staggered seating).

    I hope you bought tickets!

by WGJD on 1/14/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

The show was so fun and engaging that in the first two minutes I felt like texting all my friends to tell them what an amazing time I was having...but I didn't want to take my eyes of the stage for a second. I was pleasantly surprised by some very of-the-moment adult material (perhaps in the 80s I was simply too young to notice,) and seeing the real Jambie and Miss Yvonne was the tops. The only minus was the Meet-and-Greet arranged for ticket holders at the original venue. I didn't expect Paul Rubens to ask me my life story, but not only did he not say hello, I don't even think we made eye contact. He signed my program while talking to his manager, smiled for a photo before I even looked up, and then I heard "Next!" being called. A tiny dose of sincerity would have been nice from a man who should be thrilled that these events sold out.

by FanOPuppetland on 1/14/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

Some old and new Pee Wee's Playhouse routines. Great production and classic Pee Wee Herman. My 24 year old son said his face started to hurt after a while from laughing and smiling so much. Don't miss one of the best and most unique comedians of our time.

    A very fun night

by saulville on 1/13/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

We had a great time at pee-wee, from the moment he came out to the time he left the stage, I was 8 again. For those not sure what to expect and stop reading if you want to go in totally cold, this is a revamping of his original show at the Roxy Theater on Sunset (available on DVD). There are a few new bits meant to make it more modern which I thought fell flat, and Phil Lamar had the tough job of playing the role Lawrence Fishburne originated reciting lines originally said by Phil Hartmans character but did a great job. My only real complaint that took me out of the moment is with the technical issues. Sound went out a lot and they played delayed or wrong effects several times, feedback was kinda horrible, Jambis box wouldnt close properly etc - but at the end of the day.. . . who cares?! Its pee wee herman show. Like his show. His playhouse. And freaking Pee Wee---LIVE.... I would recommend not sitting to far to either side. I got lucky with great isle seats in section 103 and had most the stage in my view (maybe 2 feet on stage left was obstructed) but spoke to people 2 seats over from me who had a lot of obstruction and some friends in the "VIP Section" in the balcony said they missed about 5 - 10 feet of the stage which was unfortunately for them where tons of jokes took place.
