My daughters first ballet - she loved it and was mesmerized - they did an amazing job keeping 3 year olds interested!
no talking throughout. My 3 year old daugter enjoyed it though. She takes a ballet class, so maybe that added to the enjoyment. Me (and other parents) helped the kids by quietly narrating the story. Good show, though it would have been better if it ended 10 min earlier. All in all, it was a little pricey, but definitely enjoyable.
Exquisite Little Ballets is a one hour production of 4 ballet pieces, geared to children from 4 to 100 and is delightful. NYTB is adept at storytelling with fluid musicality. The children around me, myself and the other adults all ooohed, aaahed and giggled. I left wanting more.
Keith Michael's choreography is exceptional. Such a variety of dancing styles in this work match perfectly with the outlandishness that is Alice's wonderland. Highlights include the slapstick laughs inspired by Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the creative and original "Jabberwocky" scene, and the poignant Alice/White Rabbit pas de deux. Strong dancing plus an interesting post-show Q & A with NYTB directors, Keith Michael and principal dancers. My 5-year old and I both really enjoyed the evening.
Four charming and diverse dances plus an informative interactive session with the founder/artistic director of NYTB (all within one hour) = a fun and successful outing for young children. My 5-year old and her friend loved the show. It was thoughtfully organized with short, high quality pieces (Tudor, de Mille, Goslar). NYTB clearly understands the attention span of kids but does not talk down to them or offer watered down works. The educational portion was surprisingly rich, and it definitely captivated the children in the audience. Highly recommended.
A wonderful program of small ballets that appealed to children and the child in all of us. The dancing was lovely and the inclusion of the children as dancing examples was charming. Loved it!
The combination of short, well-done ballet segments interspersed with Diana Byer's teaching points about the ballet was new, and kept the children in the audience amused. It was especially fun to have children from the ballet school as part of the performance.
at first , when i saw all of the kids, how am i going to enjoy this. but the kids were good. i was surprise, how good they were. now the ballet was so good, i enjoy it so much ,they were great dancers. they dance beauilful. thank you for a great. time for me and my wife.
Not bad, buut not great. Good for those interested in history of theater ballet.
Length of performance was very appropriate for a toddler; the set was visually pleasing; the casting choices for the wicked step sisters (ie., males) were confusing for a toddler and overall the performance was average.
Waste of time and money. They didn't let us in until it was about 10 minutes before the show (and it was windy/freezing, so were standing by the door shivering)!!! Then the show started 10 minutes late! Never again ...
I took my three year old grandaughter to see the Nutcracker and opted for the best available seats. The best available seats happened to be terrible. The whole first section of the theatre, seats with double letters (our seats were EE 110 and 111) are totally useless for chidren and should not be sold for children oriented productions. My grandaughter who has up until now shown interest in ballet was far from awed by this production. She was more interested in the lights above the stage and the snowflakes reflected on the wall than with what was happening on the stage... that's because she couldn't see the dancers very well. The set for the production was also rather colorless and lacked imagination. Needless to say, I don't think we will return for another show. Thank you for this opportunity to report on our experience.
The times I remember going to the Nutcracker it was an ADULT show only! There were crying babies and too much talking to even enjoy the show. I felt like the show was rushed and the dancers were not that great. Very dissapointed!
Went with a friend and our 3yr old sons and had a great time. Very child friendly and age appropriate. Would certainly recommend for other parents w/young children. Expect a bit of noise in the crowd as there were as many 3-5yr olds as there were adults. At 3, a 1hr performance is perfect. Any longer wouldn't have worked.
Perfect in length. I wouldn't spring for the orchestra bc it's hard for the kiddos to see. The costumes and set design were better than expected for such a short production.
The sets were amateurish, the dance quality was not high, the storyline choppy. Music canned and low-quality sound. Since you can pay the same price for some absolutely spectacular Nutcrackers, the ONLY advantage of this one is the short length. I'd say go see a different one and just leave early if it's too long for your child.
This production is great to introduce children to ballet.
This was my daughter's (4yrs) 1st time at the ballet and it super exceeded all of my expectations. The how was wonderful and the length was perfect for children. I would definitely recommend!!
Good performance for the 3-7 set! The event is short (1 hr) with lots of great and lively costumes. Esp. for girls who are into ballet--there are lots of real live ballerinas! Only criticism is that the actual printed program could be a little more detailed and elaborate.
Perhaps as a former ballerina, and someone who has been in Nutcracker performances for many years, I was incredibly dissapointed with the alteration of the storyline. Yes, I know it was for small children, but how dumbed down does it really need to be? Where the act that got the most applause was a batton twirrler? really? It was not a ballet, I would not take my daughter to it. If they want to see a fun dance/acro performance take them to Cirque du Soliel, don't ruin the Nutcracker....
