About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

    Loved Every Minute!

by Kristin on 1/22/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

We made the trip to nyc specifically for this show. We went in very familiar with the soundtrack but there were still moments that surprised us. Literally jaw dropping moments, Broadway at it’s finest IMO. The cast was incredible, so glad we were able to see the original lineup! I will definitely see this again when it tours locally, but seeing it on Broadway was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget!

    Hadestown Slow, Boring and Uninspiring

by Broadway Frequently on 1/22/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

One of the worst shows I've ever seen on Broadway if not the worst. And I've seen plenty. Dark. Unhappy. Slow. Avoid it if entertainment is your goal.

    Left my soul in Hadestown

by b.김 on 1/21/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Unpopular opinion. Skip Hamilton and see Hadestown instead. Also, If you rate this show less than a 5 you are “lyre (and a player)”. Enough with the show puns... This show is powerfully beautiful old tale with a dystopian modern twist that will leave your heart yearning for more. Days later I’m still listening to the music and reliving the show in my head. Think about my next trip to the underground. Don’t mind the negative comments on here all of the actors are superb as well. Also to note Andre De Shields is a legend. And Reeve Carney sings in the stratosphere for the whole show.

    Maybee the best...

by Zευς on 1/17/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

What a show. From the beginning to the end you feel that you’re part of the musical. Like you’re inside the ”Cotton club” in 1930 with Hermes, Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades and Persefone. It has everything- the music, the acting and the dancing. So let us raise our cups and start all over again.

May the Gods be kind to all who sing

by Glaucus on 1/17/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I shared a wonderful evening with the people closest to me. Having seen a dozen or more shows over the past couple years, this truly rises to the top as a timeless and repeatable performance and story in so many ways. All involved should be cheered and cherished and held up high for welcoming all, regardless of state, to share in the joy and pain and touching story in a way that could have only been done as it was performed. Thank you one and all. This is a story that is worth seeing again, and again, and again, and again, ...

    What a wonderful show!

by BuffaloGal on 1/15/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Expectations were high after all of the positive reviews and the fact Hadestown won best musical 2019. Hadestown met all of them! Talent was wonderful (Especially Eva Noblezada and Andre DeShields were fantastic!). The set was so creative with the lowering circle and steam punk vibe. Loved the New Orleans feel to the music. Words and story were powerful. So nice to get to see a creative and unique show on Broadway that wasn't based on a movie or juke-box style! Wish we could see it again!!

This show is compelling and powerful. The actors are all the very best. Everyone is great, not a weak spot anywhere. But, Amber Gray's performance is one of the finest I've ever seen. You will get sucked into this amazing story...and it will change you. Do not miss it.

by C. on 1/13/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Strong show, great performers. The fun of the production is in the energy it creates. The Actors' Fund performance held a special magic with a curtain speech that had some of the cast and audience crying at the honesty presented.

A very good show. Very Talented Actors.

by Musical Mom on 1/13/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This show is based on a Greek Tragedy, and so the songs and the themes are not as "peppy" as traditional musicals. Although the performers are outstanding, the music is mostly subdued and the set is often very dark. I left satisfied, but without the feel-good mood I usual experience after a musical. The social commentary is not subtle at all either. Overall, I think it's a worthwhile performance with talented actors, but if you are looking for something upbeat, I would choose another show.

    5 All star performance

by Broadway on my mind on 1/13/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The cast of Hadestown are perfect for their role. Everything about these performers, voices, dress, movement on stage, facial expressions, is exactly befitting for their character. I could listen to the music over an over again (and i do!). Don't miss this performance. I sat in the mezzanine but if i saw it again, I would get orchestra seats. The mezzanine is good, but I believe the floor would be even more intense.

    See this incredible show

by BHNH on 1/12/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This show was one of the best shows I have seen in years bar none. We loved every second of it. The cast is incredibly talented, the music is beautiful and the story is uplifting. There is no problem following the simple plot. You do not need any knowledge of Greek mythology to understand what is going on. The characters are easy to hear. I thought it exceeded Hamilton. Come see it. The theater is small and there is not a bad seat in the house. If you sit up close to the stage you will be in for a real treat. Hermes was my favorite actor (he is amazing in his stylish performance).

    Hadestown lacked chemistry

The music was great! The lead characters were not developed and had zero chemistry. The choreography was excellent.
