About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

    Amazing Experience!

by JIm on 1/11/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This show was the top priority and main reason for my trip to NYC. It didn’t disappoint! I was super excited to see the whole company was on for my show! Andre was magnetic. Reeve and Eva have great chemistry and both have great voices. Same thing can be said about the amazing Patrick and Amber! Hearing the Fates live was fabulous! They sound great on the CD, but were even better live! The orchestra was also great! This experience will stick with me!

    Amazing Show!

by Julia on 1/10/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Everything about the show was phenomenal! The lighting, the use of the set and the way it changed for different locations. The performers really put their all into it and it makes the show that much more amazing. If you are looking for a new musical to obsess over or just enjoy some variety, I highly recommend Hadestown. It’s amazingly well done and stands out from other shows.

    Best Musical Ever

by Sailorsam on 1/10/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I’ve seen this musical three times now since April and it just doesn’t get old. The staging, the lighting, the music, the choreography and of course, the acting is second to none. Move over Hamilton!

    Hadestown a Let Down

by MIA Day Tripper on 1/8/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

i knew that if there were direct tickets still available a week before the show that there was something amiss. As an avid NYC theater goer I am always waiting for the point in the performance where everything peaks. Unfortunately that moment never comes. Hermes, played by Andre De Shields steals the show with his stage presence. Persephone, played by Amber Gray gives an "all-in" performance that you can feel. Where the show misses the mark is with the performance of Orpheus, played by Reeve Carney. Understanding his role as a "simple boy" his musical performance lacks greatly. To the point of bringing down the overall performance of the entire cast. I hate to be harsh on him, as I know that people struggle for that Broadway opportunity, but unfortunately for me that is what impacted our appreciation of the show. This was the consensus of 9 different theater goers. The theater is very nice and I felt that the visibility form all angles was good. (men's bathroom is upstairs and you get a chance to see most of the theater). Very nice set production and good solid performances by the rest of the cast. Worth watching, but certainly a let down.

    Loved it!!

by Melony on 1/2/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I loved everything about this show. The music, the staging and choreography, the performance by the leading actors, the performance by the ensemble and band. Everything was amazing. I loved the classic story, but modernized and made relevant. Also, a special shout-out to the theatre staff. My flight was significantly delayed and I had to take a taxi directly to the theatre, luggage in tow. I had been awake since 4am and was very stressed! The staff greeted me warmly and took care of my luggage and did what they could to take care of me and make my experience a good one! Very appreciative!

    Brilliant Broadway at it’s Best!

by Kara M on 12/27/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Sophisticated, fun, and original musical with jaw dropping performances! I walked into Hadestown not knowing anything about it, unusual for me as I go to theatre often. I was blown away by the staging, effects and performances, the story it told and the messages I carried away with me. A tale for our times as told by the Greek gods. Just go now!

    Great night at the theater!

by Rick on 12/27/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Amazing staging! Wonderfully talented cast! Music and lyrics were terrific! Not sure that I would have undertaken to create a musical out of a Greek tragedy but they really made it work! My fifteen year old daughter, who had read the story in school and knew how it ended, still was so wrapped up in it that she cried at the end and thought it was among the best shows she's ever seen (and I promise you, that's saying a lot because we see a lot of shows)! Go see it!
