About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

    Best Ever!

by Kdobies on 2/1/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Hadestown was the best musical theatre I’ve seen in decades. Everything!!! The music, dancing, set, lighting...a total theatre experience. The band, voices, and harmonies were superb. Amber Gray knocked it out of the park. A work of genius by Anais Mitchell.

    A little disappointed

by Greg on 2/1/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The night we attended had two swings playing principal roles (Hermes and Eurydice). We expressly went to the show to see Andre De Shields and Eva Noblezada who were both out. The show was well crafted and the other performers were wonderful, especially Patrick Page, but it was hard not to feel a little disappointed to miss Andre and Eva.

    Music Overload!

by BethWillWag on 2/1/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I wasn’t expecting to love this show. The premise just wasn’t that appealing to me. But I was blown away! Actually, the experience reminded me of the first time I saw Les Mis 30 years ago. (Les Mis is the gold standard for me. I’ve probably seen 30 Broadway/West End shows and only a few have come close). Comparing this show to Les Mis is the highest compliment. Hadestown is completely sung and the music is lush and so much fun. I wasn’t expecting fun! The actors were first and foremost vocalists. But they weren’t shabby in the dance and acting categories either. The stars were all fabulous but I LOVED the Fates. You seldom hear such rich contralto voices. The workers were mesmerizing. I could hardly take my eyes off of them. This is one show I will see again. And again. And again.

    AMAZING Broadway

by J. on 1/31/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The show was incredible. The songs were clever and catchy. The acting was great. And the set and costumes were creative! Thoroughly enjoyed that show. Only downside was how close out seats were so I recommend trying to sit further back so you don’t miss anything. Must see show!

    Great Show

by C. J. on 1/29/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

"Hadestown" is a delight. The music produced by an eight piece band positioned on opposite sides of the stage is good, loud, even pulsatile. The singers were great and the lyrics good. The story was understandable and meaningful. My wife and I enjoyed "Hadestown" and recommend it to all.

    SUPERB!!!!!!!!

by E. G. on 1/28/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

I went to this show mainly because of all the buzz and hype about it. I had no idea it would knock the wind out of me in how fabulous it was!! The entire ensemble cast was perfect in their roles and amazing! I think where you sit makes all the difference-but I would definitely see this show again and again. I had read the synopsis prior- but seeing, hearing, and feeling the music and story were not what I expected at all. I understand completely why they keep winning awards. And I was super fortunate to see it with original cast members-where they literally own and live these roles. You're paying attn to every slight of hand because these characters are all second nature to them and in a way that still makes every minute exciting.

    Living it up on top!!!

by Clementine on 1/24/20Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Hadestown is a stunning show in every way. I already knew the music—from lyrics to band to arrangement to vocal talent—was incredible, and I’m avsolutely living for the storyline, and the show itself only made me like each more (which I did not think was possible). Every single actor on stage is ridiculously talented, and every detail of the performance— physicality, line delivery, facial expressions—is amazing. Visually, the show is exquisite in terms of set, lighting, and costume design. I would pretty much call it a perfect theater experience and recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to go.
