About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

    Hadestown

by M. B. on 12/24/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Phenomenal evening of theater! The Walter Kerr theater is a gem and our box seats were excellent. We sat house-right and perhaps missed five seconds of seeing an actor. The acting, singing and choreography were all top notch.

Don't Wait, Go Way Down to Hadestown

by Patrick on 12/20/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

As a surprise for my sister (a huuuuuge musical fan that is in love with the music of Hadestown), I bought the two of us tickets to the show this past Tuesday. We flew from Michigan into NYC just to see it that night, and we both -loved- it. I cannot stress enough how blown away we both were. The cast for the main characters was absolutely amazing: from Orpheus' (Reeve Carney) insanely high notes to Hades' (Patrick Page) unbelievably low notes, from Eurydice's (Eva Noblezada) charismatic stage presence to Hermes' (André de Shields) incomparable swagger. We met with many of the cast members afterwards, and they were all so great (photo is with us and Reeve Carney). I'd especially like to highlight Persephone's performance played by understudy Kimberly Marable for our performance. Rachel was initially sad that Amber Gray (the main cast member for Persephone) was not in for the night. Obviously we were sure that Kimberly Marable's performance would be amazing (you don't get into that position without being the absolute best of the best!), but we were curious as to how it would differ from Amber Gray's version of the character. Afterwards though, Persephone was the character we discussed the most: the raw emotions during interactions with Hades forcibly tugged on our heart strings and the voice conveyed such strength that commanded our attention. It wasn't just them though: the Fates (played by Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, and Kay Trinidad) commanded the stage throughout the night. Some of our favorite songs, including "When the Chips are Down", were executed to such flawless perfection. They really made it feel like they alone were in charge of the story, intimidating all of the other characters down the path they lay out for them. The chorus (played by Anthony Chatmon II, Jessie Shelton, Timothy Hughes, John Krause, and Afra Hines) carried the story and songs and made it feel so alive, and the band made it feel like I was sitting in a Louisiana jazz bar being told this fantastical tale. And of course, none of this would matter if the musical itself was not such a breathtaking work. Anaïs Mitchell's music brings us all along on this unlikely journey combining folk music with Greek gods, Rachel Chavkin's direction made us feel like we were there on the journey and not just watching, Rachel Hauck's stage was oozing with style, and Nevin Steinberg's and Jessica Paz's sound design was immersive and at times even intimidating (the echo effect in "Why We Build the Wall" was so eerie and cool). It was an unbelievable experience and I'm so happy we got a chance to see it! It was meant to be a present for my sister, but it turned out to be quite the gift for me as well.

We went to see this because our daughter asked us, we are not very fan of musicals but she is, she had heard the songs and she had wanted to go to see the play since it went to Broadway, we finallya were able to make it and it was worth, she just loved it and I was able to appreciate great talents.

    Creative and energetic...

by Cathi on 12/17/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Really enjoyed this play- an interesting production! Choreography, sets, songs were great! Acting was good! My only negative was audio- I had real difficulty hearing lines , especially anything with Orpheus! We sat in Row R in orchestra- I have excellent hearing , and am a regular theater goer! This took away from the mostly wonderful evening!

Very well done show. Great acting and singing. Holds your attention, but as far as musicals, the scores were good , not memorable. You wouldn’t want to buy the soundtrack.
