Gary Clark, Jr. is the second coming of Hendrix. Hands down, he's the best bluesman out there today. His studio albums don't even compare to his live shows. He mixes it up and gets souly, bordering on R&B at times, which personally I'm not crazy about, but at least it provides variety and showcases his talent and versatility. But when he's rocking the blues, it's nothing short of phenomenal.
Terminal 5 sucks. The sound is awful, poor sight lines and in general it's just too crowded. GCJ is great but he needs some new material. Pretty much playing the same songs from last tours.
Amazing show. Both opening acts were fantastic and Gary Clark killed it as usual.
If i had to give him a grade it would be a solid B-. Some really good songs with some jams along the way. If he would of come out and had just two more REALLY good songs in his encore it would of been A+. But i thought the encore was just ok. But then again he's kinda new to the big scene and needs to get some more songs under his belt. Would definitely go again !!!
Amazing show! Gary is a blues rock phenom! Hearing Gary play blues staples/classics like Catfish Blues and 3 O'Clock Blues was surreal. Along with that, his original songs When My Train Pulls In, Bright Lights, Don't Owe You a Thang, Travis County and Numb are soon to be blues classics that my kids will hear future artists cover!
It's clear that GCJr's one of the best guitar players in the world right now. It seems like there's nothing he can't do. It's just a shame that melodic blues rock no longer has a chance to reach the masses. Still, there are enough music lovers out there for him to attract a loyal, fun crowd.
It should be no surprise that GCJ would melt everyone's faces. He, along with a select few of this new generation of blues guitarists, will help bridge the blues gap
I absolutely love Gary Clark Jr.'s music, can't get enough of it. But live, I wasn't blown away.
Saw GCJ at governors ball in New York City and although he was great there it did not so him justice. His performance at the Apollo was by far one of the best music experiences I've ever been to.
Gary Clark, Jr. and his band blew me away at the Royals in Boston. It is so awesome to see and hear a young man carrying the blues forward. Keep it going!
I was really looking forward to this show . Like many other Blues Fans , have been following Gary Clark for some time and jumped at the opportunity to hear him play . Unfortunately , we were disappointed . There is no question about his guitar ability or the other members of the band . All were excellent musicians . None showed any charisma that night . They played with little feel for the audience . Additionally , the vocals came across weak . Maybe it was an off night or the band needs to readjust . Look forward to Gary's growth .
Gary Clark was very good. I really struggled through the backup groups. At one point I wanted to get up and leave but when Gary Clark came on it was such a relief. Also I was curious about the Royal, where the venue was originally scheduled.
What a show. Gary Clark Jr. Is a must see. If you love the blues, he is the man. And the Apollo Theater is a spectacular venue, with all of it's rich history. Sound was excellent. Crisp solos, great singing. Notable omission from set: Next Door Neighbor Blues. That song should be automatic.
One of the best guitar performances I've ever seen!
This show was way way better than expected. Blak and Blu is such a diverse album I wasn't sure what to expect, but he blends and transitions across vibes masterfully. He is an artist, fun to see in a small setting. Don't hesitate. See him if you can.
For sure an unforgettable concert. Gary Clark Jr is an amazing musician and singer.I only hope I will get a chance to see him again in a small venue.
Gary Clark Jr. is a phenomenal guitarist. He has taken a lot of the elements of old blues players and managed to work his own style and soul into the mix. He can jam hard and he can play soft. Seeing him live makes his music 20x better He did a real surprise encore. You know how bands always put on an encore? And you can actually tell the show is done when the lights come on and the DJ starts playing other music through the speakers. Well that happened. Lights came on, new music starts playing, people start shuffling out. After one song finishes the lights go back down, he comes out on stage and says "I thought it was over," and starts playing "In the Evening." Awesome guitarist, awesome guy.
The venue was moved at the last minute from the Royale to the Wilbur. Lighting was terrible. We could not even see the faces of the performers. The sound mixing was terrible. Gary Clark Jr. even flashed several glances off stage towards the mixing board when strange, loud sounds burst from the speakers. The rhythm guitar often overwhelmed Gary Clark Jr.'s guitar and voice which was really too bad since Gary has so much talent. The rhythm guitarist played with his knobs so much it was distracting. Gary Clark Jr. is an awesome talent, but this was not the best run event. The opening band, Wild Feathers, were terrific.
Gary Clark Jr. is awesome. He's a legit guitar god, and if you like him, you HAVE to see him live. He played his standards, he jammed out, and sounded amazing. This is my second time seeing him. I vastly preferred the first concert, but that was due to the venue. GCJ is a total rockstar. Unfortunately, I had really terrible seats (the venue changed 90 mins before the show from GA to seated... and it was first come first served--which they neglected to mention--and we were in the WAYYYYYY Back), so I didn't get to see how he played. It was weird to not be standing/dancing while we were watching GCJ! It was also poorly lit so from the way back, I literally couldn't see anything but shadows. Sound was still good, but I wouldn't go to the Wilbur for another concert unless I got to choose the seat.
