What a wonderful intimate venue to see this level of talent........Gary was incredible in his performance, awesome blues guitarist, and wonderfully powerful band....amazing evening.
This show was fantastic. Saw him in Indy last November, and he has improved a noticeable amount since then, and he even then he was phenomenal. He is playing music unlike anyone else out there today, or yesterday, and it feels like a privilege to be able to see him play. Seems as if he had a fantastic time tonight, his band played well. Couldn't have asked for more. Newport is trash though. The place has one bathroom with 5 urinals and one toilet, to service, i dont know, at least 1500 people. The only womens bathroom is up a flight of stairs. There was only one bar with 3 registers and 4 employees, to service everyone. It was bad. Not to mention everyone wants to leave the place, through one little door, and you have to go up a 2 ft wide staircase to get off the venue floor. This place not enjoyable, and is a hazard in it's current state.
Gary put on a great show and the crowed loved him.I been to alot of shows at the Newport and havent seen the response he got even tho it was on a Tuesday night...sound was just right and he played for almost 2 hrs with the encore.Todd Wolf Band was pretty good also.
Awesome show. Best young blues guy around, lots of energy
Definitely a must see artist, especially when headlining and not opening or on the multi-band summer show circuit. He altered some of his songs from the recorded versions.
Great performer. Orginal. Crowd pleaser. Drummer fabulous.
Good location, good warm up band. Gary played incredibly well, and I will go see him again as long as the venue is small.
I'm 50 years old and have been to a ton of concerts over the years, but this was one of the best I've ever seen! Gary flat blew the roof off of The Newport Music Hall! He is RIDICULOUSLY talented! Can't wait to see him again!
The crowd was great and Gary fed off of them and played an amazing set.
Wow! This was one of those nights where in twenty years I will be able to say " I saw Gary Clark Jr. when...". I cannot wait to see him again!
this concert was amazing! Gary Clark, Jr could have been a little more enthuastic, but really, it was great
Gary is the real deal!!!! He can play it all. Don't miss out.
Gary Clark Jr is an amazing live performer and plays with so much emotion. Love it
This show was amazing! It has been a long time since I have seen this kind of talent and I wouldn't hesitate to see Gary Clark Jr. again!
This is the first time I've seen Clark in person. Not a lot of chit chat (a good thing). Just gettin' it on.
His guitar playing touched my soul and lifted me higher. This is what good music feels like.
Gary Clark jr was amazing as always. This was my third time to see him but first not in a festival setting. The house of blues has great acoustics and the music sounds great wherever u are. My only complaint is it was too crowded. I feel if they would've sold 50 less tickets it would've been more comfortable.
Amazing.... Awesome performance! He is just one of he best musicians!!!!
The last-minute venue change at Monday nights show didn't seem to shake the anticipation oozing from the crowd eager to see Gary Clark Jr., most for the first time. The mutterings from the second balcony of the warm cozy and clean Wilbur, conveyed that it was a nice venue: "we get to sit down in seats", "...wicked civilized in here", was heard from one of the downstairs urinals. It was more enjoyable then standing up all night in black-box type of club (Royale). This venue seem to suit the show a little bit better anyway on a cold mid-November holiday weekend. The overpriced Harpoon IPA's were served by friendly bartenders as was the staff of the Wilbur. The two opening act's faired well with the discerning audience. Max Frost, the first act from Nashville- very talented musicians but haven't quite found their voice as artists. They were trying to do a little bit too much musically- across too many genres. For instance, using a drum machine on one tune which gave their roots based country rock a poppy modern flavor. The second act, Wild Feathers were stronger singers, stronger tunes and were more connected as artist but they were just too many songwriters and one band it almost seemed like a mishmash of songwriters that teamed up to form a supergroup- too many guitars and it was confusing who the audience was supposed to focus on. Speaking of looking at the artist onstage, the lighting people at the Wilbur should be fired immediately. There was no spotlight and stage lights only backlit the band so that you could not see the faces of the musicians at all, which was pretty annoying the whole night including when Gary Clark Jr. came on. The other not-so-great part was the sound and that the balance of sound was really bad. The drums were none-existent in Gary's set. I went downstairs to say something to the sound person, "I cannot hear a backbeat at all!". He looked annoyed but fixed it, because the 2 & 4 snare suddenly became a presence. Drummer Johnny Radelat was it was strong and solid on the drums despite the limitations of the sound engineers. Guitarist King Zapata, had a more piercing tone but ripped some amazing amazing solos and Gary was happy to share the stage with him. Johnny Bradley was rock solid on the bass. Gary made the best of a bad night and played with tremendous depth and emotion. Highlights of the night were Gary's version of Catfish Blues, and If You Love Me Like You Say/Third Stone from the Sun, which he ripped a beautiful solo over a nice big groove, slower than Hendrix's version. Mr. Clark is still enjoying his popular hit Bright Lights, as was the crowd which sang loudly to the authentic, roots/blues original.
