  • Killer Performance by a Guitar Madman

by Anonymous on 9/11/14Rumsey Playfield, Central Park - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Gary Clark is not only a guitar virtuoso, but also half wreck loose hellcat and half pure Texas roots soul singer that puts more personal wattage into his shows than most nationally amplified radio stations use in their broadcasts. His music is the truth. Watching him play is like standing in the eye of a hurricane and enjoying yourself. His guitar is an electric lasso that strangles and shocks you defenseless with beautiful lashings of symphonic hot fire. If you melted down Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Smokey Robinson, Prince and Lenny Kravitz into a 50 gallon drum and struck the thing with a lightning bolt from Zeus... you'd get Gary Clark. Other Notes: Rumsey Playfield was ideal, a small outdoor venue with a massive sound system under a surreal sky at dusk. Gary's band is killer, his drummer looks like Animal from the Muppets and murders his set with the biggest baddest sound that almost competes but moreover compliments Gary's ungodly guitar. The rest of the band does little to showcase their clean expert chops, in fact you almost forget they're on stage, but they do provide the precision thunderous and harmonic bass lines that ultimately give Gary the depth, shading and color he needs to launch and explode properly. Also, opener John Batiste and Stay Human were pure down home good vibin' zydeco funk magic in their own right and worth the price of admission all by themselves.

  • An out-of-this-world experience!

by VEChatfield on 9/11/14Rumsey Playfield, Central Park - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

GCJ is incredibly talented -- that is a known fact. When I bought my ticket, I was expecting a fantastic performance, but he BLEW. ME. AWAY. And everyone else in the audience, for that matter. He is so engaged with the audience, and puts on a wicked awesome performance. Seriously, the best concert I've ever been to -- hands down. Can't wait for him to come back to the city!

  • Gary Clarke Jr. at Summerstage, NYC

by cwit on 9/11/14Rumsey Playfield, Central Park - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Gary Clark Jr, sure can strum a mean guitar. Blues Rock at it's best. Central Park on a beautiful night sure is an amazing venue. What a blast--and damn tasty beer too (though $8 is a little steep).

The entire show was awesome!!! The venue is great because you can get so close. I would recommend both the band and the venue.

  • Gary Clark Jr. - Continuing to catch that EC Torch

by Dylanized on 7/27/14The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed this show. First time we'd ever seen him perform live - the other times were the Crossroads DVD's (couldn't make he show in 2010). He is outstanding on the guitar - is mastering it - and his vocal range is 3 octaves. This man has nothing but stars in his future as more people get to know who he is and what he can do. We really enjoyed this.

  • Simmer Then Boil

by MichaelFromHannibal on 7/26/14The Pageant - St LouisRating: 5 out of 5

Gary Clark Jr. displayed incredible talent as a guitarist and a wide range of influences in a two hour show at The Pageant in St. Louis Wednesday night. At times dispensing notes as carefully as if they were bars of gold, and other times unleashing a torrent of them, Clark showed he can handle psychedelic blues as easily as a pop song, treating the packed venue to a stunning performance. Whether it was a Texas shuffle, Chicago blues, or a love song inspired by 50's music, Gary Clark Jr. and his band were not only capable of executing any genre or style they played, they delivered great songs to a crowd which was enthusiastic and willing to yell back during the in-between moments. It's not hard to imagine a radio station playing nothing but Clark songs. Certainly there are radio stations with less variety than Clark and his band have produced over the last few years. Whether working in a sly tribute to Chuck Berry, gliding around the stage, or just conversing with the audience, Gary Clark Jr. was a crowd-pleaser and anyone who has not yet seen this guitarist and his band needs to make an addition to their bucket list.

  • Gary Clark Jr...an up and coming LEGEND!!!

    by osubuckeye8 on 7/16/14Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

I missed GCJr the last time through when he was an opener at the Schott. I wasn't going to let another chance go when he came around again. I was excited to see he was playing a smaller place when he came to Columbus. We got there when doors opened and after the opener at 8 played for 30 minutes he came on at 9. He played for almost two hours and didn't even take a break. He played like it was his last time on earth! Truly amazing stuff.

  • Amazing talent, Amazing venue

There's no one quite like him. He was truly amazing. Loved the show and it was such a great fit with the charm and history of Saint Andrews. Come back soon!

  • A Legend in the Making

by Deemojo on 7/12/14Saint Andrews Hall - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

How lucky to see Gary Clark Jr. at such a small venue. I guarantee he'll be playing a much larger venue the next time he's in the D. Regardless I'd see him again. Everything you read about him is true...his music not only inspires his fans, but also some if the best in the business...Clapton, Stones... Don't miss him the next time around!!

  • The man can play!

    by CJ123456789 on 7/12/14Saint Andrews Hall - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

Gary Clark Jr. and his band put on an exceptional show. The sound was awesome-clear, crisp, tight, not too loud. I've really tired of big name acts turning their sound boards over to a bunch of nit wits whose incompetence leads to extremely loud, painful, muddled, and distorted sound. How does this happen? Why? I attend concerts to hear the sounds of all the instruments not obnoxiously loud, muffled, bass heavy, can't hear the vocals crap which unfortunately, even in this day, is far too common. If you want to hear what a concert should sound like, attend Gary Clark Jr. in a audio friendly venue. You won't be disappointed.

This concert blew me away. So talented. They played the blues with a layer of hendrix overtop. These guys can play! They played for almost 2 hours, such a great show, highly recommend.
