Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

    It was amazing

by Jody on 11/27/22Ford Field - Detroit

I could not believe how big the beers, haha, the concession people were super friendly and patient when I couldn’t figure out what to order. The one thing that was difficult for me was reading the food options on the walls in the concession stands as they were very small to see

    Half time show

by jeise on 11/27/22Ford Field - Detroit

We paid good price tickets to experience the game and half time show in person, live. We feel we got cheated a half time show because we had to watch on screen at the stadium when I could have been at home watching it on my tv for free. However the game and seats were good, the price for seats were extremely high so we got standing room tickets which were better than most other second or third level seats, right on the fifty yard line.

    Lions Game

by Stacey on 11/9/22Ford Field - Detroit

Always a fun time! Easy to get there and enjoyed all the activities set up for the kids. Concessions are expensive but to be expected so just planned ahead for that.

I had a awesome experience with my son and daughter... And it was my daughter's first ever football game.

    Uncomfortable Seating

by Tempest Tossed on 11/9/22Ford Field - Detroit

Sitting in the Ford Field seats made me yearn for the comfort of a coach airplane seat! What is it with these NFL stadiums that think everyone is 5 foot 6 inches and weigh 130 pounds? I paid big bucks to get a seat that had zero legroom and made me way too familiar with the people sitting on either side of me.

    Great atmosphere

by PhinJedi on 11/2/22Ford Field - Detroit

It was a great game and the atmosphere of the game was great. Friendly people throughout the stadium. Will definitely come back.

    Bad as Their Record

by MJ Hawk on 11/2/22Ford Field - Detroit

Terrible seats and overpriced at that. Lines everywhere, security, concessions, restrooms, etc. But not at the pro shop where swag is outrageously priced. Hard to believe so many fans keep going to watch that garbage and pay so dearly to do so. Did I mention $60 for parking 4 blocks away - gross.

    Fun time

by DolphinsFan on 11/2/22Ford Field - Detroit

The atmosphere was electric. Even as an away fan, the home fans were nice and it made it a fun time. My only gripe was parking. Limited highway exits and entrances made getting into and out of a lot and the highway was a nightmare.

    Great time

by Danceandfootballdad on 11/2/22Ford Field - Detroit

Great atmosphere easy to get in the building. Lots of food options and seats were good too.

    It was a nice day

by The Dude on 11/2/22Ford Field - Detroit

Seats were comfortable and we were way back. Food lines were way too long…. And I’m not sure why they are so expensive for food items. It’s not like you have anywhere else to get it but I didn’t buy woods because it was so expensive. There are far too few ushers and security.

    Awesome

by Jon on 11/2/22Ford Field - Detroit

Great stadium, great seats, wished for a different result on the game, but the experience was top notch nonetheless. Easy sale, no issues at gate, and look forward to doing another someday.

High prices & No change returned

by HW on 10/15/22Ford Field - Detroit

Beer prices were too high. The beer salesman with a tub in the middle of walkway didn’t offer any change when I made my payment, he just kept all the change without asking. That upset me!

We were stuck in traffic until an hr after kick off

by Kat on 10/5/22Ford Field - Detroit

Because of both tigers and lions game together we were stuck in traffic until way after kick off gps told us we would be there by 11 three hrs later we got to the stadium all parking full and game was half over we finally found parking over 3 miles away. When we finally walked all the way to the stadium it was 4th quarter. What a waste of gas and time never again will I waste the money

    Super fun event!

by Kim on 10/5/22Ford Field - Detroit

We're from Pittsburgh, and came to town to visit friends and go to a game. Although it was strange for us to be INSIDE for a football game, we really enjoyed all the activities that were available before the game and thought everyone we encountered was super nice and accommodating. We would definitely return for another game in the future.

    Great Tickets and Fun stadium

by CV on 10/5/22Ford Field - Detroit

Had tickets on the 1st level near the 10 yard line about 40 rows up. Could see everything and the crowd was electric. The stadium has some really nice features. The warehouse look on the upper side, the choice of food and drinks and the classic anthem the Lions sing after a TD. Great fun and would recommend to anyone who loves football. Entering the stadium can be slow so get there at least 25 minutes early. We walked over from our hotel, so can't comment on parking.
