Detroit Lions Team History

The Detroit Lions haven't always been the Lions. In 1934, George A. Richards, a radio executive, purchased the Spartans, a team from Portsmouth, Ohio. After the $8,000 purchase (a huge sum at that time), he moved the team to Detroit. In only their second year as the Detroit Lions, the team won the 1935 NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26-7 at the University of Detroit Stadium.

During the 1950s, the Lions enjoyed some of the most successful seasons in their history, winning three league championships against the Cleveland Browns in 1952, 1953 and 1957. Divisional titles came again in 1991 and 1993.

Detroit Lions at Ford Field

The 65,000-capacity Ford Field consists of 1.85 million square feet and has four levels of suites, a level of club seating, and a ground level designated for concessions and retail. It also has some of the best sight lines of any football stadium in the United States, made available by a design that omits the traditional club and suite levels, thereby lowering the upper level.

In 2017, the Detroit Lions announced a $100 million investment into stadium renovations. Updates to The New Ford Field included a complete overhaul of Ford Field's audio/visual guest experience with new video boards to ensure easy viewing for fans in all corners of the stadium, an upgraded sound system, as well as renovated stadium suites and premium club areas.

    Greatest NFL Fan base

    by R. D. on 8/18/23

Win or lose the Detroit Lions are so entertaining to watch. The cheerleaders and the drumline are also fun to watch as well. But my favorite thing about watching them is doing it at Ford Field with other great fans. The vibe at the stadium is always incredible. There has never been any problems everytime I’ve gone. The culture and atmosphere at the Detroit Lions games is nothing like I’ve ever seen before. It’s genuine and pure fun all around. If I could give this 10 stars I would. 10/10 I would recommend going to at least 1 game.

    Great Experience

by Purebred Mutt on 12/14/22Ford Field - Detroit

My wife myself and our feiends all had an absolute blast. Thats because of the environment nothing that has to do with ticket master. Ticket Master has been allowing price gouging which I dont support.

    Impeccable

by Crizo on 12/14/22Ford Field - Detroit

First of all, this was my birthday gift, to go to the game with me and three others. I found some great seats online that was close to everything. I did not have any problems using the app to get inside the stadium. I will surely be a repeat customer.

Absolutely amazing game and experience at Ford Field

by AMcClung on 12/14/22Ford Field - Detroit

This was my first Detroit Lions game as well as my sons. I surprised him as an early Christmas present. His favorite team is the Minnesota Vikings. So what better game to surprise him with. His team did not win, however the look on his face being there was priceless.

    A Lions Victory

by Retirement Travellers on 12/7/22Ford Field - Detroit

Great game, great atmosphere! The Detroit Lions make it a fun, family-friendly event! Lots of activities throughout the game and a fun halftime show! Only complaint is that the men's washrooms had crazy long lineups.

    First visit

by Treen on 11/28/22Ford Field - Detroit

It was a great experience. The price of the tickets were reasonable. The staff was friendly and helpful. The concession stands were cash less. The long lines seemed to move slow but thankfully we went to get snacks early so we did not miss the kickoff. Parking was easy. I found a safe place for my vehicle. It was nice to have vendors along the way to the stadium. The traffic moved quickly as we were leaving the stadium.

It was wonderful and pretty much everything went smoothly!

by Ginny!!! on 11/28/22Ford Field - Detroit

The hotel we stayed in checked us out of our room and we couldn’t get in-had to sign in again with the front desk! They had our stuff licked in the room! We had come in the night before the game which was not part of our package.

    Stadium needs more exits

by Amanda on 11/27/22Ford Field - Detroit

Beautiful stadium and had a fabulous time at the Thanksgiving game, but the stadium needs to be more/better exits. Upon leaving the stadium. Everybody is pushed to one of two main exits. You feel completely corralled and can only move according to the people around you. In the event of emergency I can’t imagine what nightmare exiting would be like.
