David Gray on Tour

David Gray can captivate an entire sold-out stadium with just his voice and a guitar, pulling at every listener's heartstrings with each emotional hook. The singer-songwriter grew comfortable on the stage starting out in the early 1990s touring around the UK, Ireland and the US. Within a few years, Gray's audiences grew significantly, especially when he started opening for groups like Radiohead and the Dave Matthews Band. But it wasn't until he went independent and released the album White Ladder in 1998 that Gray began getting the recognition he deserved. He ended up performing at the popular Glastonbury Festival in 1999, and eventually made it to the main stage in 2003. He's since toured the world extensively, selling out dates from the US to Europe to Australia, as he continues to expand his impressive catalog of songs.

David Gray in Concert

English singer-songwriter David Gray has enjoyed a strong, steady career composing some of music's most understated - and underrated - melodies. Gray was born in Sale, Cheshire, in North West England, in 1968, but moved to Wales with his family as a young boy. There, he started dabbling in music, playing in local punk bands as a teenager. He then headed back to England to attend the Liverpool College of Art (whose alumni include John Lennon), and began honing his songwriting skills. After graduation, he relocated to London to pursue a solo career and was quickly signed to Hut Records in 1992. He then released his debut single, "Birds Without Wings," followed by his 1993 debut album, A Century Ends, which captures a young Gray finding and forming his fierce, folk-inspired style. His next two albums, Flesh and Sell, Sell, Sell, brought some extra attention - especially in Ireland - but failed to reach a wider audience across the pond. He decided to go DIY for his fourth album, White Ladder, which he recorded in his London apartment and self-released in 1998. This decision proved to be more than wise: Dave Matthews then released the album on his brand-new ATO Records in 2000, and the single "Babylon" shot up the charts in both the UK and the US. The album has since been certified platinum a jaw-dropping 10 times. Over the following decade, Gray would continue to experiment, weaving in electronic touches while maintaining his signature heartfelt acoustic style. His 2005 album, Slow Motion, debuted at the top of the charts in Ireland and the UK, while his 2009 release, Draw the Line, featured notable appearances from Annie Lennox and Jolie Holland. In the next decade, Gray would slow down a bit, releasing his 10th studio album, Mutineers, in 2014, before returning in 2019 with Gold in a Brass Age, both released on his own IHT Records.

The Venue was new to us, close to home, familiar, perfectly sized & organized. My only complaint is no cash at the bar. This is unacceptable to me ~ cash forever!

  • Loved David Gray!

The show was amazing. The venue was nice, my first time there. It was so easy to get in and out of which I appreciate. The drinks were REALLY expensive!!!

  • Exactly what I hoped for

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the David Gray concert that took place in St. Louis on July 19th. We are not big concert goers anymore, particularly since Covid began, but we were pleased that the concert was easy to get to, the crowds were not awful, it was an outdoor venue, and the concert started mostly on time. David Gray delivered flawlessly and played some of our all time favorites. He still sounds as he did 15 years ago and he was charming and entertaining to boot. Years ago my husband and I went to a concert of his when we had babies at home. We got a call a minute into the first song from the sitter and had to leave right away. We always regretted that we had not gotten to see him. We really enjoyed our evening and the wonderful music!

  • David Gray is Amazing

Loved the White Ladder anniversary tour! And loved the interaction he had with the crowd. I don’t know how this guy is not a mega star in the US. Ireland has it figured out!

  • Lack of Info

by Cara on 7/22/22Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - ChicagoRating: 3 out of 5

The show was excellent. The bathrooms, vendors, acoustics, etc were fantastic. The fact that NO information was sent out regarding bag size and then you had to rent a locker for 10.00 was nothing but a money grab for the crooked city of Chicago. Embarrassing for the city.

  • Awesome

by Kate on 7/22/22Saint Louis Music Park - Maryland HeightsRating: 5 out of 5

He was just great. Played all his hits and the audience was really into it> Venue was pretty good but the seats were really little for anyone who is tall.

  • David Gray was outstanding!

The venue is nice but awfully hot under the covered area!

  • Waited so long

by Poppi on 7/22/22Saint Louis Music Park - Maryland HeightsRating: 5 out of 5

David Gray concert was amazing. He and the band were perfect. Glad I held on to my tickets for two years...he was worth the wait.

  • No air flow: too hot

by MM on 7/22/22Saint Louis Music Park - Maryland HeightsRating: 4 out of 5

The venue is nice, but for summer shows, they need to hang large fans in the ceiling. Also, put center speakers in front of the stage because the ones to the side of the stage are so far apart that they only truly benefit those in the seats at the back.

  • Top notch show.

by Davestwin7 on 7/22/22Saint Louis Music Park - Maryland HeightsRating: 5 out of 5

White this a quite magnificent album. Being able to hear it in it's entirety with added snippets about the songs made for a brilliant evening. Added on to that were some hits from other albums. So so so good.

Awesome show and great venue. David Gray was wonderful and I'm really enjoying the new Music Park. My only suggestion is that they install some sort of fan system for those ridiculously hot nights.

  • Best David Gray concert ever!

by Dave on 7/22/22Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I have seen him perform at least four times previously, and have always had an amazing time. This concert was a step above the rest. What a great idea to tease us with a few hits, take a break, then play White Ladder in order, and come back for a kick-ass encore. It was the most memorable moment in our five-day trip to Chicago, which also included an excellent Norah Jones concert at the same venue.

  • Chicago Heaven

by Anna on 7/22/22Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

Gorgeous venue with perfect weather. Walkable location feom all major downtown area hotels. Perfect crowd. Delightful music. Only needed more toilet paper in women's restrooms.

First time seeing him in concert and he exceeded expectations. Have been listening to him all week since the concert. Sounded great! Terrific customer interaction and we loved that he opened with his greatest hits. I’d highly recomm be!

  • Perfect evening in Chicago, David was on his game.

by Markpirategolfer on 7/21/22Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

I’ve seen David Gray three times. This was by far his best show. The sound system and the video presentation was top notch. David played well over 2 1/2 hours. Davis was engaging and the audience on the first 50 rows stood the whole time. If you don’t like to stand suggest you get back seats. And my wife cried David Gray sounds mean that much to her….

  • Awesome show
