Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • Nice but missing a few things

by TS on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

Game was great but venue needs cup holders at the seats very annoying to have to put your drink on the floor

  • Improve Greensboro

by Lynn S on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

The game was awesome!! I have grown up going to the Greensboro Coliseum for a variety of events my entire life. The experience has declined this year. I attended the A Boccelli concert the same week. The parking price of $30 is ridiculous and they process cards way too slowly. That starts the delay getting in. Then the security is at the bottom of the entrance hall leaving attendees outside in long lines. Very few tickets were available when I purchased my tickets. The coliseum was empty when the game started. They delayed the start of the concert days earlier. I want the ACC and other events to stay in Greensboro, but the new management group has work to do!! Offering 2 tickets later in Charlotte, after I purchased 5 on Greensboro did not make it better.

  • Greensboro is not a Charlotte home game

by Frank on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

I’m from out of town and bought tickets to a home game but then look at the fine print. My fault, but the game was in Greensboro an hour and a half away. Only realized when I looked at my tickets and arrived at the venue in downtown Charlotte.

  • New Horizon Coliseum

by AC on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 4 out of 5

The game was great! Getting in was horrible. Parking was $30, there were plenty of spaces but it took an hour or more in car lines, then hundreds were in line waiting to enter through security. Not sure what has changed but when it was Greensboro Coliseum entering events did not take away so much time from the actual event.

  • God Awful Experience

by Jerry on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

We waited an hour just to get in the door of the coliseum beginning at 6 pm. I had 3 hungry teenagers who wanted to see the game but we weren't in our seats until the tip off so I had to proceed to wait in the concession line that weren't ready and not in any hurry to help anyone. The entire night sucked..

  • Hornets vs Grizzlies

by Red on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

Game was awesome, but couldn't get in...waited over an hour on the ramp to get in to First horizons coliseum... no metal detectors. Most didn't make it in till half time. Couldn't arrive any early because the doors only open an hour ahead. They need to figure something out there.

  • Basketball game was good terrible experience

by Young on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

I've been to basketball games in Charlotte , the LJ VM in Winston-Salem and various other sporting events and never have I seen such poor management and lack of planning on Greensboro coliseum's part to get people into an event when it takes over an hour to get into the front doors and through metal detectors and you missed half the game trying to get into an event because they're either understaffed overwhelmed or underprepared. Total fiasco when the game starts at 7:00 and you and 5,000 other people are still waiting to get after standing in line from 6:00 there is a problem it needs to be addressed total fiasco just shows the inepness of the Greensboro coliseum staff and management of that event very disappointed.

  • Funtime

It was great... love to see them come back to greensboro

  • Hope you weren’t hungry or you’d miss the game!

by Jeff C. on 10/11/25North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 3 out of 5

The game was fun for awhile. The atmosphere was lively, but the sound was overwhelming. The music/sound effects/p.a. never stopped. It would have been nice to occasionally hear the ball bounce or a sneaker squeak. We don’t need constant stimulation. I think this is what they do to prisoners of war to break them! Speaking of overwhelmed; the food service was definitely not ready for a crowd that size. Not sure what they’re used to, but I went to get a pretzel with 6 minutes left in the first half, thinking I’d beat the crowd, and never made it to the front of the line. I didn’t want to miss the game, so I went back to my seat, empty-handed, after barely moving in the line for over 30 minutes. At least it was quieter in the concession area. The teams put on a pretty good show for a pre-season game even though OKC didn’t dress any of their marquee players. I left with 9 minutes left in the game. The score was lop-sided, I was hungry and was getting a headache from the noise. Glad they played in North Charleston, but not sure I’d come back if they did it again.

  • Great seating

Everything was great, perfect seats for the price!!

  • Fun Charlotte Hornets Game

by Joe on 10/8/25North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 4 out of 5

We lost but it was very entertaining to watch the players being different from most teams as well as all the stuff they did in between quarters and on timeouts. I also wish Lamello played a little more but it was super fun.

  • Fantastic Time

by Timo on 10/8/25North Charleston Coliseum - North CharlestonRating: 5 out of 5

I had an extremely great time, I also had great seats on the floor. It was nice to see the players, sports reporters, staff, and even the mascot up close.

  • PreSeason Spectacular

  • Great experience

    by Nyknicksfan32 on 3/23/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Great experience, great venue to see a ball game and very easy entrance to the game, only negative is the Knicks lost the game I went to see 😂😂

  • Worse ever!

by Datenightinhell on 3/23/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 1 out of 5

This was the most unorganized arena I have ever been in. Lines everywhere, people rushing areas. Some people are allowed to take handbags others are forced to take theirs back to hotel or vehicle. We will never go to anything at Spectrum Arena again.

  • Very Entertaining

by Ms. Bee on 3/12/25Rating: 4 out of 5

Parking was great and inexpensive. So much fun with the dancing and watching the game. Overall it was a nice experience. The food was not so good. Thankfully we ate before going. There were several nearby restaurants. Instead of getting a bottled drink, just get the cup and get unlimited refills.

  • Well run

by Sherri on 3/11/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Everything was smooth- parking, getting into the venue, security, refreshments, bathroom. Good times.
