Charlotte Hornets History

The original Charlotte Hornets franchise joined the NBA in 1988 and, thanks to players such as Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Kendall Gill (and later, Glen Rice, Anthony Mason and Jamal Mashburn), enjoyed substantial success in the 1990s, starting with the 1992–93 season. Owner George Shinn moved the franchise to New Orleans in 2002.

But the NBA returned to Charlotte for the 2004–05 season with the expansion Bobcats, led by owner Robert L. Johnson, the first African-American majority owner of a team in one of the four major sports. In 2010, Michael Jordan took over majority ownership of the franchise, and in 2014, Jordan's team re-adopted the Charlotte Hornets name after the previous New Orleans Hornets became the Pelicans.

During the 2017–18 season, four-time All-Star Kemba Walker became Charlotte's all-time leading scorer, surpassing original Hornet Dell Curry.

  • A fun time at the Hive

by Hornets Fan on 11/25/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Hornets games are always fun. Lots of energy & activity. Good entertainment all the way around. The Hornets played well to start but after James Harden took over it was an uphill battle. Too many injuries make it difficult to be consistent. Hopefully a winning streak will happen soon. They deserve it & the fans do as well.

  • Amazing Second Experience

    by Olivia I on 11/15/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

We had an amazing time at the game. This was our second time visiting the spectrum center for a Hornets game and it was amazing and we had great seats again. The services were great. The food was great and so was the drinks.

  • Lakers Game in Charlotte

by tigermike on 11/13/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

There were available handicapped seats which were NOT offered to me when I asked before the game. I asked 3 staffers during the game when there WAS an available seat, and was told that the person could easily arrive in the 3rd or 4th quarter. That was NOT an acceptable answer, and I could have had that seat until the individual arrived, which they never did. Customer service is still lacking in Spectrum center, although I didn't pay for customer service, I paid for the Lakers.

  • Great experience

All of the staff were really nice, venue was clean. Great family event.

  • Enjoyed the game...

by Mec on 11/5/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 3 out of 5

I really wish that the sound system was better. We could barely heard anything...the Referee, the halftime show, and any announcements.

  • What a difference a year makes.

by Mackythepro on 11/5/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

Had a great time at the Hornets game on Sunday. Upgrades to the stadium were really nice. New seats were comfortable and seemed a little more spacious. Really enjoyed the fan experience as well. Much better this year.

  • Pleased Fans

by The Stinger on 11/4/25Spectrum Center - CharlotteRating: 5 out of 5

From entering the arena we were great with warm smiles. Being that my wife is disabled, the staff pulled a chair for her as she waited for me as I parked our vehicle across the street. This professionalism and kindness flowed all the way to where we were to be seated. Again, we were met warm smiles. Thanks for a great evening!

  • Very Long Lines at Entrance

by S. Woods on 10/20/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

The line to get inside the venue was too long. It took an hour to get in and be seated. I missed the 1st half of the game. Very disappointed.

  • 1.5 hour line to get in

by JW on 10/19/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

Missed most of the first half because it took almost 1.5 hours to get into the building. Bought expensive tickets, but the coliseum security was a disaster and totally unorganized. No one response from the Hornets for the thousands of people that didnt get what they paid for.

  • Unorganized

by Gucman. on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 1 out of 5

It was very unorganized. The line was long to enter and was at a stand still. After standing in line we were told to walked around to the front of the arena to enter. When most entered it was almost half time.

  • We didn't get into the venue until 3rd quarter!

by Nic on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 3 out of 5

There was no direction on how to get into the arena. There were 3 converging lines trying to get in. Finally, a policeman came out and told us to go around to the front of thr building to get in. That was criminial!!! We all missed 2 1/2 quarters of the game multiple people just left without seeing the game.

  • Good value for money - bad logistics

by Luisrock on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 4 out of 5

Im glad we can have preseason games in Greensboro, but the logistics to get in are nonsense, we spend about an hour in line to get in, the game even started while we were on the line. This needs to change for the next time

  • Facility ill prepared for event

by Nik on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

Went to see the Charlotte Hornets pre-season game. The game started at 7pm and I got to the parking area around 6:45 due to not being able to get away from work any earlier. It takes a very long time to get parked. People were entering the building from several entrances all converging to a central area. Once you get inside the building, everyone jockeys for position as this sea of people are forced into a narrow funnel. What's at the end of the funnel; 4, count them, 4 metal detectors. This is an extremely inefficient process. I got to my seat with 4:56 minutes left in the second quarter. There were probably thousands of people behind me in line. I assumed the game must have been sold out since there were so many people trying to get in. Once I got to my seat, the place was half full. I imagine some did not get to their seat until well into the 2nd half. At the end of the game while exiting the building, I witnessed a stadium crew member verbally getting into it with a game attendee, mouthing off and almost coming to blows. I think a would rather them removed the metal detectors and take of chances of getting shot than have to experience getting into the building again. The Hornets won the game and looked great. The facility and the staff, not so much

  • Missed most of 1st half due to coliseum delays

by be on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

Game started at 7:00. Arrived and parked and in line at 6:30. Huge line outside as if doors hadn’t opened (scheduled for 6:00 opening). At 6:40 the line started to move. Massive crowd and chaos trying to get through security checkpoints. It was 7:30 before we got inside. Getting in there were long lines for food and it was well into the 2nd quarter before we sat down. Very frustrating to spend money on tickets, $30 to park and then miss that much of the game.

  • Great game but the venue was a nightmare

by Shoemash on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

It took a solid hour to get to our seats after parking at First Horizon Coliseum. After standing in line for 50 min, slowly working our way up to the single entry, we discovered there only four security ports to handle screening over 10,000 fans. As a result of the delay we missed the entire first quarter. Fortunately the Hornets, and in particular LaMelo, put on a real show in the 2nd half which is the only reason I didn’t give the event one star. Bottom line though, the Greensboro Center needs to seriously rethink how to handle an event like this in the future.

  • Ridiculous Security Line

by Steve on 10/18/25First Horizon Coliseum - GreensboroRating: 2 out of 5

It took over an hour to get thru security and we arrived at 45 minutes before tip off. Disappointed that they did not delay start as there were hundreds in line behind us.
